The escalating settlements observed in concrete slab tracks pose a significant challenge in Korea, raising concerns about their adverse impact on the safe operation of high-speed railways and the substantial costs involved in restoration. A primary contributor to these settlements is identified as the utilization of rock materials sourced from tunnel construction, incorporated into the lower subgrade without the requisite soil mixing to achieve an appropriate particle size distribution. This study employs numerical analysis to evaluate the efficacy of partial reinforcement in reducing settlements in rock-filled lower subgrades. Column-shaped reinforcement areas strategically positioned at regular intervals in the lower subgrade induce soil arching in the upper subgrade, leading to a concentration of soil loads on the reinforced areas and consequent settlement reduction. The analysis employs finite element methods to investigate the influence of the size, stiffness, and spacing of the reinforced areas on settlement reduction in the lower subgrade. The numerical results guide the formulation of an optimal design approach, proposing a method to determine the minimum spacing required for reinforcements to effectively limit settlements within acceptable bounds. This research contributes valuable insights into addressing the challenges associated with settlement in concrete slab tracks, offering a basis for informed decision-making in railway infrastructure management.

The fishing port was once the foothold of production as well as the stronghold of communities but with the declining of the fishing industry, ports became abandoned space. Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has continued its effort to vitalize marine tourism since 2010. Shinyang Port in particular is designated as a Prearranged Marina Port Development Zone, and planning for the Jeju Ocean Marina City project is underway. Nevertheless, fishing port remodeling projects implemented on Jeju so far have focused only on civil engineering such as renovating old facilities. In addition, most Marina Port Development Projects have been irrelevant to local communities. Leading projects by the local government mostly suffer from a lack of funding, which results in the renovation of old facilities and improper maintenance, while private sector investment projects do not lead to benefit sharing with the community. Shinyang Port, also renovated in 2008, ended up with outer breakwater extension construction that neither solved the fundamental problem of the site nor gave benefits to residents. To arrange a way to solve problems for civil engineering focused development project, improper maintenance, and benefit sharing with community, first, this study proposes a development plan that connects with the outlying areas near the ports. The plan reflects existing topography, Jeju traditional stonewalls, narrow paths on the master plan and programs by reading the regional context. In this way, this paper suggests a space development plan reflecting the local landscape and characteristic factors. Second, it satisfies various needs by using existing and new Marine Tourism Resources. Third, it examines sustainable operation and management measures through residents' participation. The proposal is significant in two key ways: it is a fresh attempt at connecting the fishing port with its outlying areas from a landscape perspective; and it considers environmental, social, economic issues, and suggests participation for local communities. Thus, the model can be used in future fishing-port remodeling plans for revitalizing unused space, including invaluable traditional landscapes, and for boosting the marine-leisure industry.
The objectives of this study were to investigate soil chemical and microbiological characteristics in Yeongnam, Honam, Chungcheong and Kangwon for forest rehabilitation and management in abandoned coal mine areas. Average soil pH was 5.5 (4.2 ~ 8.1). Average contents of TOC, total N and available P2O5 were 1.1% (0.1 ~ 2.6%), 0.08% (0.02 ~ 0.14%) and 16.1 ppm (3.4 ~ 63.1 ppm), respectively. Average CEC was 3.4 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ and total no. of bacteria1 showed $4.9{\times}10^{12}CFU\;g^{-1}$. According to areas, soil pH was the highest in Kangwon (6.1), and Yeongnam (5.7), Honam (5.3) and Chungcheong (4.7), respectively. TOC and total no. of bacteria showed no difference. Total-N was higher in order of Yeongnam (0.10%) > Chungcheong (0.08%) = Honam (0.07%) > Kangwon (0.06%), while Av. $P_2O_5$ Yeongnam (23.9 ppm) = Chungcheong (24.5 ppm) > Honam (10.9 ppm) = Kangwon (4.9 ppm). Yeongnam showed higher value in CEC (17.5 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$) than any other areas. Generally, soil characteristic of Yeongnam was better for vegetation growth than any other areas, while Kangwon was worse. According to elapsed time from forest rehabilitation, patterns of soil pH and CEC showed decrease according to time while TOC and total-N increased. There were no significant differences in Av. $P_2O_5$ and total no. of bacteria. Soil chemical characteristics in abandoned coal mine areas were disadvantageous for vegetation growth in comparison with general forest soils. Therefore, sustainable managements such as fertilization are necessary for good rooting and growth of vegetation.
In order to minimize regional disparities between the North and the South, it is very important to reduce shortages of food and energy in North Korea in the short and mid-term. In the long term, it is important to reduce not only regional disparities between two Koreas but also regional disparities in North Korea. It is important to consider national policies of the North, the South and other countries in Northeast Asia in the process of building regional development policies for North Korea because the future of regional development in North Korea depends on policies of stakeholder in Northeast Asia. This study suggest some policy directions for regional development in North Korea. At first, building new industries, such as hi-tech industries and MICE, is important for regional development potentials in North Korea. Also, we should take some special development strategies according to regional potentials in North Korea. For example, Nampo region should be specialized through hi-tech industries. Wonsan region should be specialized through MICE. Finally, this study suggests some policy issues to the South Korean government. Financial support from South Korean government about inter-Korean economic cooperation should have priorities on the regions where have potentials of hi-tech industries and MICE. Also, we should implement inter-Korean economic cooperation policies under consideration about spatial aspects.
A geotechnical research including observation of the movement of wall-structure, monitoring of groundwater, non-destructive geophysical investigation was conducted to workout a countermeasure to conserve the Muryong Royal Tomb which is the most extinguishable cultural property of the Baekje dynasty. Movement of the structure of Muryong Royal Tomb generally arises to the front chamber and its amplitude in a rainy season is twice of that in the dry season. It represents serious problem concerned about structural safety of the royal tomb in the rainy season. Movement of wall-structure is caused due to the rain infiltration through cracks in the quicklime layer within the soil mound on the top of the royal tomb and the change of the temperature inside of the tomb. Cracks found around the Muryong Royal Tomb are mostly spread in NW and SE of the tomb structure and it harmonizes with the direction of movement of wall-structure of the Muryong Royal Tomb. Counter-plans for safety and prevention of water-leakage that obstruct the movement of wall structures towards the direction of south are very important for the conservation of Muryong Royal Tomb. After getting rid of the cause of structural change by the restoration of the front chamber of the Muryong Royal Tomb, it needs to reinforce the quicklime layer for prevention of waterleak.
Purpose: The cavity exploration of the lower part of the road is carried out to prevent ground-sinking. However, the detected communities cannot be identified by the cavity location and history information, such as repackaging the pavement. Therefore, the field applicability of RFID systems was evaluated in this study to enable anyone to accurately identify information. Method: During temporary recovery, tag recognition distance and recognition rate were measured according to underground burial materials and telecommunication tubes using RFID systems with electronic tag chips attached to the bottom of the rubber cap. Result: The perceived distance and perceived rate of depth for each position of the electron tag did not significantly affect the depth up to 15cm, but it did have some effect if the depth was 20cm. In addition, water effects from nearby underground facilities and rainfall are relatively small, and the effects of wind will need to be considered during the weather conditions of the road. Conclusion: The RFID tags for field application of the pavement management system store various information such as location and size of cavity, identification date, cause of occurrence, and surrounding underground facilities to maximize cavity management effect with a system that can be computerized and mobile utilization.

This paper compared bridge maintenance in United Stated, United Kingdom, Japan, and Korea. Bridges play an essential role in transportation network and in the economic production process. To provide a desirable level of service to the public within limited budgets, it is required to provide effective bridge maintenance activities (e.g. inspection and repair/rehabilitation) at acceptable level of bridge service. A number of bridges are expected to age rapidly in Korea, which will be the excess burden of government. Since several countries have experienced a number of deteriorated bridges because of aging, the countries aforementioned in this study have already developed comprehensive bridge maintenance programs such as inspection practice and repair/rehabilitation techniques. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to synthesize and to compare useful knowledge on bridge maintenance and bridge crack repair/restoration of deteriorated concrete bridge in the four countries. Finally, recommendations that will serve as guidance to transportation agencies for potential enhancements to bridge maintenance and bridge repairs are presented.
Recently, thank to the popularization of light-weight drone through the significant developments in computer technologies as well as the advanced automated procedures in photogrammetry, Unmanned Aircraft Systems have led to a growing interest in industry as a whole. Documentation, maintenance, and restoration projects of large scaled cultural property would required accurate 3D phenomenon modeling and efficient visual inspection methods. The object of this study verify on the accuracies achieved of 3D phenomenon reconstruction as well as on the validity of the preservation, maintenance and restoration of large scaled cultural property by UAS photogrammetry. The test object is cltural heritage(treasure 1324) that is the rock-carved standing Bodhisattva in Soraesan Mountain, Siheung, documented in Goryeo Period(918-1392). This standing Bodhisattva has of particular interests since it's size is largest stone Buddha carved in a rock wall and is wearing a lotus shaped crown that is decorated with arabesque patterns. The positioning accuracy of UAS photogrammetry were compared with non-target total station survey results on the check points after creating 3D phenomenal models in real world coordinates system from photos, and also the quantified informations documented by Culture Heritage Administration were compared with UAS on the bodhisattva image of thin lines. Especially, tests the validity of UAS photogrammetry as a alternative method of visual inspection methods. In particular, we examined the effectiveness of the two techniques as well as the relative fluctuation of rock surface for about 2 years through superposition analysis of 3D points cloud models produced by both UAS image analysis and ground laser scanning techniques. Comparison studies and experimental results prove the accuracy and efficient of UAS photogrammetry in 3D phenomenon modeling, maintenance and restoration for various large-sized Cultural Heritage.
A distribution survey was conducted from 2018 to 2020 to evaluate the distribution status, habitat characteristics, and extinction threat of the short ninespine stickleback Pungitius kaibarae (Gasterosteidae). Literature reports of P. kaibarae distribution have been sorted by each period, 1980~1996, 1997~2005, and 2007~2017, and the samples were collected in 32, 43, and 64 stations for each period. Among the 75 streams and 193 sampling sites investigated during the study period, 1,400 P. kaibarae individuals were collected from 26 streams at 39 sites. The main habitat of P. kaibarae was downstream or brackish water zones with a low altitude, slow water velocity, and many aquatic plants. The main reasons for the decline in population size were assumed to be drought and flood, river work for flood restoration and river maintenance, bridges construction, and predation by the exotic fish species Micropterus salmoides. Previous evidence reported a 42.6% reduction in occupancy within 10 years, a decline in habitat quality, and the spread and impact of the exotic fish species Micropterus salmoides. Therefore, P. kaibarae is now considered a Vulnerable (VU A2ace) species based on the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. Therefore, P. kaibarae should be redesignated as an endangered species by the Ministry of Environment and systematically managed.
Recently, agricultural lands decrease sharply, which was caused by urbanization, land consolidation, road construction, and innovation city construction, etc. In particular, Goyang, Chenan and Wonju city were had severe land use change. Therefore, we analyzed changes of land use, soil properties, and soil information in order to provide the basic soil information and soil management practice in these cities. The results are summarized as follows. The area of crop cultivated land in Korea (2011) was reduced to 17.3ha compared to ones from the previous year (2009). The paddy field decreased by 24.2 ha but, upland field increased by 7.0 ha. The reasons for the reduction of the paddy field were converting paddy field to upland (20.7 ha) > public facilities (3.2) ${\geq}$ building (3.2) > idle land (1.3) > and others (0.9). Other reasons for reduction in the upland field were switching upland to paddy field, (20.7 ha) > land developed (4.5) > and restoration (0.3) respectively. The main reason of converting paddy field to upland was changing from rice to more profitable upland or greenhouse crops. The cropland area (paddy fields, upland, orchard) of Goyang, Cheonan, and Wonju city were reduced to 1,466 ha, 9,708 ha and 6,980 ha respectively. The ratio of cropland area in each city was reduced by 45~25% dramatically compared to upland soil survey project in Korea (1995~1999). These data were compared with MiFAFF statistics data to use for land use cover map of Ministry of environment. But they were differences significantly. Therefore, intensive investigation should be advised throughout the utilization plan. The paddy fields located in small valley in Wonju city were changed into upland or orchard. The drainage classes of soil have been deteriorated because the flows of water were intercepted by road construction and other disturbance to water flows. In particular, paddy fields have been changed to not only upland, orchard, greenhouse cultivation but also to fallow and soil dressing on paddy in Wonju city. The soil suitability classes of paddy field in Wonju innovation city were the 3rd grade for 70.8% of the area and the 4th grade for 29.2%. The soil suitability classes of upland was the 4th grade for 88.7% of the area. Fortunately, good soil suitability classes were not belong to innovation city in Wonju. So, the good farm land should be conserved and revise the related law.
