  • This study presents the formulation of beam transition elements and transition zone elements for the effective finite element analysis of the transition regions of coupled wall structures. Beam transition element can be described as the quasi beam element which is replaced by an equivalent plane stress element, keeping equally, the basic behavior of beam element, based on the kinematic and force constraints between beam and wall element. These beam transition elements solve the incompatibility related to different degrees of freedom between beam and wall element in transition regions. Also, the stiffness matrices of transition zone elements which are directly connected with beam transition elements in transition regions can be derived from the equivalent constraint conditions. These elements provide the reasonable mesh grading schemes for transition regions and can be usefully applied to the transition regions of all structures that the interactions of wall and beam element are considered.

  • This study proposes a finite element analysis method that can analyze the vibration of a beam by considering the inertia effect of moving masses in a vertical direction. The proposed method is effective when a precise interaction analysis is not required. The inertial effects of the moving masses are included in the equation of motion, and the interaction forces between the masses and the beam are considered only as external loads. Time domain analyses were performed using Abaqus, a general-purpose finite element analysis software, and an implementation method using multi-point constraints wais presented to link the displacements of the beam element nodes and moving rigid masses. The proposed method was verified by comparing its solution with that obtained using an existing analytical method, and the analysis results for continuous beam vibrations under dynamic gait loadings were used to examine the mass effect of pedestrians.

  • A simple outline for teaching adaptive scheme based finite element method for planar problems as a part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering curriculum is presented. Displacement based finite element formulation for planar problems and representative strain value based adaptive scheme for mesh generation are considered. As examples, a cantilever beam with a concentrated load treated as a planar problem and stretching of a plate with a circular hole are analyzed with displacement based finite element method with adaptive meshes. The examples and outlines show how adaptive based finite element method may become an essential part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering.

  • In this study, we propose a new efficient 2-noded hybrid-mixed element for curved beam vibrationshaving a uniform and non-uniform cross section. The present element considering transverse shear strain is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and introduces additional nodeless degrees for displacement field interpolation in order to enhance the numerical performance. The stress parameters are eliminated by the stationary condition and then the nodeless degrees are condensed out by the Guyan reduction. In the performance evaluation process of the present field-consistent higher-order element, we carefully examine the effects of field consistency and the role of higher-order interpolation functions on the hybrid-mixed formulation. Several benchmark tests confirm e superior behavior of the present hybrid-mixed element for curved beam vibrations.

  • In this study, the shear strength of prestressed concrete deep beams is predicted using finite element analysis, and the variation in the shear strength according to the degree of prestressing is investigated. Numerical analysis results are compared with results obtained by the strut-and-tie model and associated experiments. Numerical analyses are performed on prestressed concrete deep beams with different values of concrete strength, effective prestress, ratio of tensile reinforcement, and shear span to effective depth ratio. The shear strength predicted by the numerical analysis is similar to the experimental value obtained, with an error of less than 5%. However, the strut-and-tie model highly overestimated the shear strength of prestressed concrete deep beams with a concentrated loading area. The ultimate shear capacity of prestressed concrete deep beams increased linearly with increasing prestresss applied to the tendon.

  • This paper presents the results of a comparative study between FEM and LEM on slope stability analysis. For validation, factors of safety were compared between FEM and LEM. The results from the two methods were in good agreement. This suggests that the FEM with the shear strength reduction method can be effectively used on slope stability analyses. A series of analyses were then performed using the FEM for various constitutive laws, slope angles, flow rules, and the finite element discretizations. Among the findings, the finite element method in conjunction with the shear strength reduction method can provide reasonable results in terms of safety. Also revealed is that the results of FEM can be significantly affected by the way in which the type of constitutive law and flow nile we selected.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connection with external T stiffener through the elasto-plastic finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T stiffener. For the accuracy, analysis results are compared with experimental results. It makes use of several stress and strain indices to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method.

  • This paper established the dynamic model of a flexible Timoshenko beam capable of geometrical nonlinearities subject to large overall motions by using the finite element method. Equations of motion are derived by using Hamilton principle and are formulated in terms of finite elements in which the nonlinear constraint equations are adjoined to the system using Lagrange multipliers. The Newmark direct integration method and the Newton-Raphson iteration are employed here for the numerical study which is to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed formulation.
