  • Continuous cooling transformation behaviors were studied fur low carbon HSLA steels containing three different level $(1\~3\;wt\%)$ of Ni addition. Thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) simulations to construct continuous cooling (CCT) diagram were conducted by using Gleeble system. As cooling rate increased, pearlite, granular bainite, acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite and lath martensite were transformed from deformed austenite. Fully bainitic microstructure were developed at all cooling rate condition in high Ni containing steel due to hardenability increasing effects of Ni. Ni also influenced the transformation kinetics. At the slowest cooling rate of $0.3^{\circ}C/s$, transformation delayed with decreasing Ni contents because of the diffusion of substitutional alloy elements. However, cooling rate slightly increased to $1^{\circ}C/s$, transformation kinetics accelerated with decreasing Ni contents because nucleation of bainite was sluggish due to hardening of residual austenite.

  • In this paper, the constitutive equation is developed to analyze the characteristics of strain-induced plasticity in the range of low temperature of 316 stainless steel. The practical usefulness of the developed equations is evaluated by the comparison between experimental and numerical results. For 316 stainless steel, constitutive equations, which represent the characteristics of nonlinear material behavior under the cryogenic temperature environment, are developed using the Bodner's plasticity model. In order to predict the material behaviour such as damage accumulation, Bodner-Chan's damage model is implemented to the developed constitutive equations. Based on the developed constitutive equations, 3-D finite element analysis program is developed, and verified using experimental results.

  • The inherent strain method is known to be very effective in predicting the plate deformation by line heating. Traditionally the inherent strain regions have been determined from the temperature distribution and the phase transformation regions(Ac3) of welding experiments. Since the phenomena of line heating are similar to those of welding, the experimental results under the same welding conditions have been applied directly to line heating analysis. The results cannot, however, reflect the effect of heating pattern and plate thickness. Besides, water-cooling in the actual heating process can alter the steel's phase to martensite and shear plastic deformation occurs during the transformation. In this study, the experimental measurement of temperature distribution was substituted with a transient heat transfer analysis using FEM so that we could obtain the temperature distribution according to heat flux models of the heating pass. In order to consider plastic strains occurring additionally under phase transformation, inherent strain regions were assumed to be limited to the eutectoid temperature(Ac1). Using the regions, plate deformations could be predicted to validate our method and the results were in good agreement with the experimental ones

  • Hot stamping, which is the hot pressing of special steel sheet using a cold die, can combine ease of shaping with high strength mechanical properties due to the hardening effect of rapid quenching. In this paper, a thermo-mechanical analysis of hot stamping using the finite element method in conjunction with phase transformations was performed in order to investigate the plastic deformation behavior, temperature history, and mechanical properties of the stamped car part. We also conducted a fully coupled thermo-mechanical analysis during the stamping and rapid quenching process to obtain the mechanical properties with the consideration of the effects of plastic deformation and phase transformation on the temperature histories at each point in the part. The finite element analysis could provide key information concerning the temperature histories and the sheet mechanical properties when the phase transformation is properly considered. Such an analysis can also be used to determine the effect of cyclic cooling on the tooling.

  • The present study is aimed at developing the TRIP(transformation induced plasticity) aided high strength low carbon steel using reversion process. An excellent combination of elongation over 40% and tensile strength abut 100kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ achieved in processing of 0.15C-0.5 Si-6Mn steel by slow heating to intercritial temperature region and accelerated cooling into room temperature. This good combination is caused by TRIP phenomena of retained austenite in steels during deformation. The stability of retained austenite is very important for the good ductility and it depends on the diffusion of carbon and manganeses during heat treatment. The accelerated cooling after holding at annealing temperature retards the formation of pearlite and provides the carbon enrichment in retained austenite in steel, resulting in the increase in elongation of the cold-rolled TRIP steel. On the other hand, heat treating the steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hour before cold rolling increases elongation but reduces the amount of retained austenite after reversion processing. It is accounted that the heat treating is effective for the increase in the stability of retained austenite.

  • The dissolution and precipitation of Nb, which has been known as strong carbide-forming element, play a key role in controlling phase transformation kinetics of microalloyed steels. In this study, we analyzed both numerically and experimentally the precipitation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and its effect on the austenite decomposition during cooling. Nb precipitation in austenite matrix could be predicted by the thermo-kinetic software MatCalc, in which interfacial energy between precipitate and matrix is calculated. The simulated precipitation kinetics fairly well agrees with the experimental observations by TEM. Austenite decomposition, which is strongly affected by Nb precipitation during cooling, was measured by dilatometry and was modeled on the basis of a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmorgorov(JMAK) equation. It was confirmed that the dissolved Nb delays the austenite decomposition, whereas, the precipitated Nb accelerates phase transformation during the austenite decomposition.

  • Combined phase transformation and heat transfer was considered on the simulation of hot press forming process, using material properties modeler, $JMatPro^{(R)}$ and a finite element package, $DEFORM^{TM}$-HT. In order to obtain high temperature mechanical properties and flow curves for different phases, a material properties modeler, $JMatPro^{(R)}$ was used, avoiding expensive and extensive high temperature materials tests. The results successfully show that the strength of hot press forming parts may exhibit different strength in the same parts, depending on the contact of blank with tooling. It was also shown effectively that the strength of the parts can be controlled by designing appropriate cooling paths and coolants. This was shown in terms of different heat convection coefficient in the calculation. Overall, current combination of software was shown to be an effective tool for the tool and process design of hot forming process, although the material modeler needs to be additionally verified by an appropriate set of high temperature materials test.

  • The mechanical properties of the most widely used cryogenic materials, i.e. austenitic stainless steel (ASS), aluminum alloy and invar steel, strongly depend on temperatures and strain rates. These phenomena show very complicated non-linear behaviors and cannot be expressed by general constitutive equation. In this study, an unified constitutive equation was proposed to represent the effect of temperature and strain rate on the materials. The proposed constitutive equation has been based on Tomita/Iwamoto and Bodner/Partom model for the expression of 2nd hardening due to martensite phase transformation of ASS. To simulate ductile fracture, modified Bodner/Chan damage model was additionally applied to the model and the model validity was verified by comparison of experimental and simulation results.

  • We examined the martensitic transformation kinetics for metastable stainless steel during electrochemical polishing (EP) using different types of electrolytes. Martensite fraction measured with EBSD showed that the electrolyte with high relative permittivity exhibited comparably higher levels of martensitic transformation. The amount of charge build-up on the specimen surface during EP with different types of electrolytes was calculated using COMSOL multiphysics simulations to understand these phase transformation characteristics. The effect of charge build-up-induced stress was analyzed using previously published first-principles calculations. We discovered that the electrolyte with high relative permittivity accumulated a greater amount of charge build-up, resulting in a stronger driving force for stress-induced martensitic transformation.
