This study was conducted to investigate the influence of storage time on the sapstain development of Japanese red pine and Korean pine logs during storage in log yard, and their stain characteristics. Japanese red pine and Korean pine trees were harvested and cut into logs in mid January of 2001. These logs were transported to the two local sawmills where they were closely stacked in remote parts of log yard. The logs were then sampled destructively by cutting seven to nine 3-cm long discs along the length of each log at intervals of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 month after felling. The stain coverage and maximal radial penetration of stain were measured from the discs of the sampled logs after the isolation of causal staining fungi. The sapstain was primarily infested by the attack of bark beetles and the species of bark beetle was identified as Tomicus piniperda. The main fungal species isolated from stained wood was Ophiostoma species. Based on the present study, the logs could be stored in log yard until May without stain; but stain development was rapid after May and the severity of stain increased proportionally with storage time. Korean pine was more susceptible to fungal stain than Japanese red pine. During summer storage, decay started to develop in logs and the main species were identified as Tyromyces sp. and Schizophyllum commune. Information provided in this paper would be very useful to develop more effective control strategies for sapstain prevention in Japanese red pine and Korean pine logs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate variabilities in green moisture content, specific gravity and shrinkage in the stems of a Larch(Larix leptolepis) to provide fundamental information for technical processes. There were significant differences in green moisture contents, specific gravity and shrinkage between heratwood and sapwood. The green moisture content was correlated negatively with the height in the sapwood. On the other hands, in the heratwood, there was a positive correlation between moisture content and the height. There were no significant differences in specific gravity between south-bound and north-bound directions in both heartwood and sapwood. There were no significant differences in specific gravity due to the height in sapwood, but significant differences were foundin heartwood. There were no significant differences in shrinkage between south-bound and north-bound directions, and due to the height in most of heartwood and sapwood. However, shrinkage in north-bound direction was higher than that of in the south-bound direction in some sapwoods.
In order to investigate the physical properties of pine wood (Pinus desiflora S. et Z.) grown in Gangweondo this study has been carried out. The properties studied are percentage of latewood portion occupied in each cross section, specific gravity, crushing strength and relationships between them, respectively. The results summarized are as follows: As far as percentage of latewood portion and specific gravity are concerned, no differences between heartwood and sapwood have been seen, however, the crushing strength of the sapwood has shown larger value than that of the heartwood. 2. Width of annual ring have a defined effect on percentage of latewood and crushing strength, but specific gravity is not influenced significantly by width of annual ring. Percentage of latewood and crushing strength increased with decreasing width of annual ring (Tables 2 & 3). 3. Linear relationships between specific gravity and percentage of latewood, crushing strength and percentage of latewood, crushing strength and specific gravity for both heartwood and sapwood of pine have respectively been seen. Furthermore heartwood and sapwood have shown different patterns of variation as the following equations and Figures 1,2 and 3.
Site-specific allometric equations relating aboveground tree component biomass and leaf area to tree diameter, basal area, sapwood cross-sectional area and sapwood volume were developed using the destructive harvesting method for Pinus rigida Mill., Larix leptolepis Gordon, and Quercus serrata Thunb. stands in Yangpyeong, Kyonggi Province. There were significantly strong correlations between aboveground tree component biomass or leaf area and diameter at breast height (DBH), basal area, sapwood area and sapwood volume. For a similar diameter tree, the three species had a similar stem wood biomass. However, carbon allocation patterns to stem bark, foliage, branch and total aboveground biomass differed among the three species. Specific leaf area and the ratio of leaf area to sapwood cross-sectional area of the three species were significantly different. Allometric equations seemed To be related to leaf habit or leaf longevity. To elucidate the effect of leaf habit or leaf longevity on allometry and canopy characteristics clearly, more intensive studies are needed.
Press drying was used on sapwood and heartwood of oak (Qercus acutissima Carruthers) to find profitable means of drying low grade logs. This study was designed to investigate the process of press drying considering core temperature, current moisture content, drying rate, drying time, final moisture content, dimensional change and drying defects. The drying tests were conducted using 1.5 centimeter thick material at platen temperature of $175^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 35psi. The results were summarized as fallows. 1. Core temperature was divided into three stages of drying characterized by initial heating period, plateau temperature, and period of rising core temperature. Plateau temperature of heartwood material was higher and longer than that of sapwood material. 2. The predicting equation for change in drying rate of sapwood material was log y=-2.7925-0.0811x as function of time. That of heartwood material was log y=-3.3382-0.0468x. 3. Sapwood material reduced the moisture content from 59 to 2.5 percent in 45minutes. Heartwood material reduced the moisture content from 64 to 3.3 percent in 55 minutes. 4. Shrinkage during press drying were 20.4 percent in thickness direction and 2.5 percent in width direction. Recovery on equilibrium conditioning at 65 percent relative humidity and temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. were 11.4 percent in thickness direction and 49.4 percent in width direction. 5. Heartwood material developed severe honeycombing and moderate checking. The sapwood material dried without honeycombing, checking and collapse. All material kept wood flat.
This study was carried out to investigate a radial distribution of moisture contents (MCs) within a log cross section (LC) during oven-drying of 3 mm-thick circumferential slices cut from several domestic softwoods LCs.For Korean red pine, drying rate of sapwood slices during oven-drying represented much higher values than that of heartwood slices, and so sapwood with higher green MC early reached below fiber saturation point (FSP) rather than heartwood did. However, this distribution of moistures did not last for long duration. For Japanese larch, green MC of sapwood was approximately three times higher than that of heartwood. This similar distribution in MC was lasted until about 20% average MC. The MC was around uniform throughout the sapwood of Ginkgo when green and during oven-drying, although it was somewhat fluctuated. For Japanese cedar, the heartwood with so low moistures around FSP would begin to shrink from the beginning stage of drying, but the sapwood above hygroscopic MC prevents the heartwood from shrinking, and consequently, the heartwood or the transition wood goes into tension stress. The results for Japanese cypress showed that the green MCs of the sapwoods were much lower than those for heartwoods, and then this trend was continued until about 20% in average MC. For Chinese thuja, the green MCs of sapwoods were about 2 times as high as those of heartwood, but this along the radial gradient in MC rapidly became gentle during oven-drying.
Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb.et Zucc.) boards of 30 mm thickness were treated by steaming and four different drying methods. Small specimens were taken from the sapwoods of the treated boards and their longitudinal liquid permeability was measured according to Darcy's law. The specimens were also extracted with alcohol and aceton solutions to examine the mechanism of liquid flow in wood. It was observed that specific permeability drastically decreases with measurement time, resulting in violation of Darcy's law. It may be due to that air bubbles formed under vacuum block flow paths in resin canals. The average specific permeabilities of non-extracted and extracted specimens are different from one treatment to another. It is supposed that the properties of residual resin in resin canals change depending on the conditions of treatments. Anatomical examination was conducted with a scanning electron microscope.
This study was conducted to explain the characters of the structure of biomass production in the thrifty-mature Quercus mongolica stands and investigate the relationships between the leaf weight or leaf area and the sapwood area in the bole. Also we intended to identify the allocation ratio of stem, branches, and leaves or heartwood, sapwood and bark in trees and the characters of productive structure of stem and leaf biomass by the tree height. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The allocation ratio of biomass based on dry weight was 70-84% in stem, 11-25% in branches, and 3-6% in leaves. 2. In the bole, the ratios of composition of heartwood, sapwood, and bark were showed 37-43%, 38-46%, and 16-19%, respectively. 3. The volume of sapmood was exceeded more than that of heartwood in dominant and intermediate trees, while it was reversely appeared in suppressed trees. 4. The weight and area of leases significantly correlated with the sectional area of sapwood in bole (r>0.9. 1% significant level). 5. The ratio of leaf area($m^2$) to sapwood areal($cm^2$), k varied 0.35 to 2.05. 6. The basal diameter and the cross sectional area of a branch significantly correlated with the leaf weight r>0.9. 1% significant level. 7. The leaf weight in a tree is showed a normal distribution curve and the accumulative volume of bole is showed a tapering type.
