  • This research developed a forest-level harvest scheduling model using linear programming (LP). The formulations of the LP model include timber production schemes with constraints of nondecling yield forest conversion strategies, the minimum timber supply, levels and the maximum cut acrages. The model is able to generate both Model I and Model II types of input matrix in MPS format. In this paper, use of LP in building the framework of the strategic forest planning model was justified by comparing the algorithmic characteristics of LP with those of Gentan probability and binary search approaches through literature reviews. In order to demonstrate the field applicability of the model proposed. (1) the harvest scheduling problem for about 11,000-hectare case study area (Mt. Baekun area in Southern Experimental Forest of Seoul National University) was formulated and soloed and (2) the effects of the change in task regulatory timber production constraints or. optimal harvesting schedules here investigated.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the changes of crown fire hazard possibility from the effects of forest tending works (FTW) in Pinus densiflora stands in Korea. The study sites were located in Youngju (FTW) and Bonghwa (Control) areas. Ten representative sample trees were destructively felled at each areas to analyze the crown fuel characteristics. The results of this study showed that crown fuel moisture content in Youngju and Bonghwa areas were 103.6% and 104.4%, respectively. The needles and twigs with less than 1cm diameter accounted 50.3% of the total crown fuel load in Youngju area and 62.0% in Bonghwa area. On the other hand, it was observed in Youngju that the canopy bulk density was $0.11kg/m^3$ lower but have 1.3 m higher average canopy base height therefore having a possibility of lower crown fire hazard as compared to Bonghwa that had higher canopy bulk density and lower canopy base height.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growing characteristics of oak sprouts which have developed naturally after fire and to suggest proper management system which is adapted for oak coppice forest by controlling the number of sprouts. We examined 3 burned sites and 9 unburned pine stands in Kangwondo. In the early years sprouts of oak coppice forest grew very slowly after fire compare to common oak coppice forest. But they had over than 10 cm of DBH after 15years, their DBH reached 10 cm and entered the stage of regeneration period. We also examined the effect of sprouts control. In the case of Quercus mongolica, stumps with 1 or 3 sprouts grew 1.3 m faster than the ones in the control stand. For Q. variabilis, stumps with 2 sprouts grew 0.9 m faster. In conclusion small timber production is proper for the oak coppice forest stand which is developed on the forest fire site and pruning or fertilizing is needed to shorten the production cycle.

Nicolson. 은 IUCN Red List of Threated Spiences (IUCN2017)에 취약(Vulnerable, VU), 관심필요(Least Concern, LC)로 분류되어 있다. Nicolson.

  • This study compared and analyzed the effects of forest tending works on the vertical distribution of wildfire fuel loads on Pinus densiflora stands in Gyeongbuk province. The study sites were located in Youngju and Bonghwa in Pinus densiflora stands. A total of 10 sample trees were collected for the development of the crown fuel vertical distribution model. The 6th NFI (National Forest Inventory) selected a sample point that only extracted from managed and unmanaged stands of Pinus densiflora in the Gyeongbuk province. The fitness index (F.I.) of the two models developed was 0.984 to 0.989, with the estimated parameter showing statistical significance (P<0.05). A s a results, the vertical distribution of wildfire fuel loads range of unmanaged stands was from 1m to 11m with the largest distribution at point 5m at the tree height. On the other hand, the vertical distribution of wildfire fuel loads range of the managed stands was from 1m to 15m with the largest distribution at the point of 8m at the tree height. The canopy bulk density was 0.16kg/㎥ for the managed stands and 0.25kg/㎥ for the unmanaged stands, unmanaged stands were about 1.6 times more than managed stands. This result is expected to be available for simulation through the implementation of the 3D model as crown fuel was analyzed in three dimensions.

  • Degradation of mechanical properties of fire-killed Korean red pine has been investigated after death in 5 years period. Impact bending absorbed energy was the most sensitive property by elapsed time after forest fire. It is an indication of incipient decay of the wood and can be useful indicator to monitor any change of mechanical property of fire-killed tree after death. Degradation of mechanical properties was more pronounced in sapwood than heartwood. Impact bending absorbed energy was more reduced than any other properties in both sapwood and heartwood, while compressive strength was least impacted by elapsed time after forest fire. It is recommended that the fire-killed Korean red pine can be harvested in one year after the fire for industrial uses by considering decay and consequent changes of mechanical properties.

  • The greenhouse effect becomes the most serious environmental problem due to excessive emission of carbon dioxide. This effect is aggravated with the deforestation, particularly cleaning of tropical forest for agricultural use. As trees sequester carbon dioxide from atmosphere, forest and forest products play an important role in the use and reduction of carbon dioxide. Wood and wood products require far less energy than the alternatives such as steel, aluminium and concrete for production. Considering high probability of increasing costs in the use of fossil fuel, the relatively low energy requirement for wood processing to very important. Also wood and wood products perform as a long-term storage of carbon. Wood is therefore an environmentally desirable resource. Recently, many alternatives have been introduced for industrial use. In selecting resources, many aspects should be taken into consideration. Wood and wood products have less harmful effects on the environment than the alternatives. We should utilize wood and wood products more efficiently, which should be provided based on the sustainable forest management.

  • In this study, the multiobjective linear programming (MOLP) formulation was built to solve for the optimal forest management planning considering carbon sequestration and timber production simultaneously. The formulation was applied to a case study problem to investigate the trends of the optimal forest harvest schedules as the function of preference of forest management for carbon sequestration and timber production. The study site was Mt. Kari area in Hongchun. The formulation includes several site-specific constraints for non-declining yields, upper and lower bounds of cut volume and area for timber, ending inventory conditions, etc.. According to the changes of weight combinations for timber production and carbon sequestration, the joint production possibilities curve was proposed as the option for management choice.

  • This study was conducted to assess forest biomass resource which is a carbon sink and a renewable resource in Korea. The total forest biomass resource potential was 804 million tons, and conifers, broadleaved forest and mixed forest accounted for 265 million tons, 282 million tons, and 257 million tons, respectively. Proportionately to regional forest stocks, biomass potential of Gangwon-do had most biomass potential, followed by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. The woody biomass from the byproduct of sawn timber in commercial harvesting was 707 thousand ton/year, and that from the byproduct of forest tending was 592 thousand ton/year. The amount resulted in about 1,300 thousand ton/year of potential supplies from forest biomass resource into the energy market. It's tonnage of oil equivalent(toe) was 585 thousand ton/year. In this study, we developed a program (BiomassMap V2.0) for forest biomass resource mapping. Used system to develop this program was Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Access ArcGIS and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Additionally, This program made use of tool such as ESRI MapObjects2.1 in order to take advantage of spatial information. This program shows the map of total biomass stock, annual biomass growth at forest land in Korea, and biomass production from forest tending and commercial harvesting. The information can also be managed by the program. The biomass resource map can be identified by regional and forest type for the purpose of utilization. So, we expect the map and program to be very useful for forest managers in the near future.
