While transit is inconvenient, it is also inevitable for the efficient public transportation. Reducing the number of transfers as much as possible is most important in providing the convenience of public transportation and facilitating the public transportation. As for the public transportation card data, 61,986 items on weekdays and 69,100 items on weekends were collected. Pattern analysis and traffic influence factors were analyzed using traffic data card. Trip chain results revealed that people have more transit transfers for shopping and leasure than commuting purposes on weekends and that commuting distance and time increase by 10 km and 9.9 minutes, respectively. Besides, results of the structural equation model showed that factor 1(total travel time, total travel distance), factor 2(number of people getting on and off), factor 3(transit time), and factor 4(number of bus connections, number of operations) were found to have significant effects on the number of transfers.

The development of civilization is in line with evolution of cities and transportation technology caused by industrialization. Up to now, a city has been developed owing to transportation cost reduction and needs for land utilization as a limited core business district. Continuous increase of urban population density has accompanied by lots of problems socioeconomically such as rise of land value, traffic congestion, gap between the rich and poor, air pollution, etc. Those issues are difficult to be solved in existing city ecosystem. However, a clue for solving the problems could be found in there. The design of Seoul mid-night bus route was from analysis of movement of people in the rural area by using ICT so that a city ecosystem should be firstly analyzed for solving rural issues. If the cause of those is found, big data platform construction is required to raise the life quality of citizen and the problems could be solved. Big data should be located in the middle of the platform connected with every element of city based on ICT for real-time collection, analysis and application. This paper addresses construction of big data platform and its application for sustainable smart city.
This study presents a sensitivity analysis method for stochastic user equilibrium of multi-modal network flows. We consider a multi-modal network consisting of a road network for passenger cars physically separated from a transit network for public transport. We first establish a sensitivity analysis method with respect to arbitrary link parameters and perform a sensitivity analysis with respect to link capacity and transit line frequency as practical link parameters. Next, We establish a sensitivity analysis method and perform the sensitivity analysis with respect to modal split by passenger car and public transit. As with the elasticity of economics, these results can be important information for analyzing changes in travel behavior due to the changes in operation and policy of transportation facilities, as well as for analyzing the effects of these operational changes and policies. These results also can be utilized as a tool to constitute a multi-modal network design problem by using cooperative game theory.

The floating population that is index to figure out dynamic activities in urban area will be important in urban railway planning, but it is not useful because it is collected by posterior method. This study aims to investigate factors influencing floating population. The floating population data that was collected in Seoul for a month in December 2013 is used as dependent variable, and the negative binomial regression analysis is used in modelling. The number of households, number of employees, number of subway stations, and number of bus lines variables are statistically significant in predicting floating population.

Traffic states in urban areas are essential to implement effective traffic operation and traffic control. However, installing traffic sensors on numerous road sections is extremely expensive. Accordingly, estimating the traffic state using a vehicle-mounted camera, which shows a high penetration rate, is a more effective solution. However, the previously proposed methodology using object tracking or optical flow has a high computational cost and requires consecutive frames to obtain traffic states. Accordingly, we propose a method to detect vehicles and lanes by object detection networks and set the region between lanes as a region of interest to estimate the traffic density of the corresponding area. The proposed method only uses less computationally expensive object detection models and can estimate traffic states from sampled frames rather than consecutive frames. In addition, the traffic density estimation accuracy was over 90% on the black box videos collected from two buses having different characteristics.

Contrary to urban development, urban regeneration is a process of land development through conservation, restoration, and management. In particular, ecologically based urban regeneration is an attempt to improve the quality of life in an area, establish a stable settlement space, and revitalize the local economy by considering the ecological environment. In this regard, the objectives of this study were to establish theoretical concepts and analyze the successful foreign cases of ecologically based urban regeneration, and propose a direction of socio-economic regeneration along with the physical-environmental regeneration of urban areas in Korea. The study results suggest the following. First, strategies must be developed to coordinate public transportation, such as buses and subways, by considering the importance of bicycle riders, along with the sustainable-commuting system. Second, both the importance of planning parks and trails around water systems in various scales while maintaining the existing natural environment as well as using natural elements, such as electric vehicles and wind-power generation systems, were emphasized. Third, urban regeneration for increased energy efficiency requires specific architectural planning and facilities. Fourth, education and research for easy access by the public, as well as public-private partnership, will be needed in the regeneration process.

This study evaluated the long-term performance of RSR (Reinforced Subgrade for Railways) technology which increases the railway line capacity without the need for additional land. Its characteristics include the use of a short reinforcement with rigid wall, which make it possible to apply it in confined spaces. The 7m high and 40m long testbed employed to evaluate the long-term performance was designed and constructed near Jupo station on the Chang-hang line. This line, located close to a local bus route, had collapsed at the subgrade following heavy rainfall. The performance of the new type of subgrade was verified with long term measurements over a 2 year period including the surface and ground settlement, horizontal displacement of the wall, tensile strain of the reinforcement, and settlement of the rail top on the side track. Based on the results of the measurements made until now, we concluded that it had sufficient safety and serviceability for use as a railway subgrade. It is expected that RSR technology could be frequently used at sites which lack the necessary construction materials for an embankment and are located close to functional railway lines and boundaries, in order to settle civil complaints.
Seoul metropolitan public transport reform results in the introduction of the semi-public operation and distance-based fare policies. With implementation of these policies, public transport revenue allocation has been (will be) evolved very complicated because the existing revenue allocation issues have not only been clearly solved, which is generated by the combined relationship among Korea Railroad Corporation (KRC). Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation (SMSC). Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (SMRTC), and Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation (IRTC), but also the revenue allocation problem between bus and urban railroad-related organizations need to be considered in this combined framework. On top of that. based on the future plans such as the private sector's railroad construction plan(s), the light rail transit construction plans of several local governments and the join of remained bus lines of Seoul metropolitan areas, it is understood that the revenue allocation among public transport operating organization will become one of main issues of operation organization as well as local and central governments. As a basic approach for revenue allocation of public transport operation organizations, the purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated model applicable to estimate degree of service contribution in passenger carriage in the combined public transport network. With a hypothesis that the complete electronic card system is deployed, this paper supposes every passenger's loading and alighting stations is recordable. Thereby, this paper limits research scope as to Seoul metropolitan railroad area since used route(s) between origin and destination stations can not be traceded because transfer stations each passenger path through is not recorded. Each model proposed in the paper is as follows: 1. a generalized cost reflecting passenger's transfer behavior; 2.a K path model for determining similar routes between O-D; 3.an assignment model for loading O-D trips onto the detected similar routes using Logit Model.

The Seoul metropolitan transportation card's high value lies in its recording of total population movements of the public transit system. In case of recorded information on transit by bus, even though route information utilized by each passenger is accurate, the lack of passenger transfer information of the urban railway makes it difficult to estimate correct routes taken by each passenger. Therefore, pinpointing passenger path selection patterns arising in the metropolitan railway network and using this as part of a path movement estimation model is essential. This research seeks to determine that features of passenger movement routes in the urban railway system is comprised of M-similar routes with increasing number of transfer reflected as additional costs. In order to construct the path finding conditions, an M-similar route searching method is proposed, embedded with non additive path cost which appears through inclusion of the stepwise transportation parameter. As well, sensitivity of the M-similar route method based on transportation card records is evaluated and a stochastic trip assignment model using M-similar path finding is constructed. From these, link trip and transfer trip results between lines of the Seoul metropolitan railway are presented.

In this paper, we describe the result of the test-bed on Nation-wide Interoperable Transportation System connected with Interoperable Traffic Information Collection System, which was developed by Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings, KOREAIL NETWORKS, HiPlusCard and Samsung SDS. we constructed Nation-wide Interoperable Transportation System on 4 downtown bus routes, 20 stations on line 1 subway, 2 stations of a train and 2 sections of the Honam highway in Gwangju and Interoperable Traffic Information Collection System in Seoul University IC Card Center. So we operated that by 480 Several staff were given a test card and asked to try it for about 6 months. This test-bed is for demonstrates the accuracy, safety and credibility of the Nation-wide Interoperability standard technology and it can be applied to all of transportation practically. When the staffs contact the card to Purchase terminal, the card performs transaction with Purchase SAM in the terminal, then transactions ara used to calculate in Settlement system and Interoperable Traffic Information Collection System. Through the test-bed, we examined this process and found unexpected problems happening during the test operation and have successfully solved them. In addition, the results of the test-bed let us know what additional improvement might be required for System. The successful run of the test-bed was verified by an evaluation of the test-bed staff and a public survey.
