  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of shipping water on deck are investigated by using a simplified two-dimensional model. Formulation of the shipping water on deck leads to a nonlinear hyperbolic system of equations based on the shallow-water wave theory. Time-domain solution of these equations are obtained numerically using a finite difference method which adopts predictor-corrector method for time-marching and 2nd upwind differencing method for convection term calculation. To confirm the validity of the present numerical method, we calculated some shallow-water wave problems accompanying a bore and compared the obtained results with the analytic solutions. We found good agreements between them. Though the calculation results of shipping water on deck, we show that the shipping water flows into the deck as a rarefying wave arid grows into a bore after colliding with a deck structure. Also we examined the effects of acceleration and slope of deck and found that they have significant influences on the flow of shipping water.

  • High-speed vehicles are subjected to complex loads, such as acoustic pressure from the engine at launch and aerodynamic heating and aerodynamic pressure during flight. A thermal protection system panel is required to protect internal systems such as the fuel tank of the vehicle from the external environment. This study defines analytical models for heat transfer and thermal structure characteristics of the thermal protection system panel. Furthermore, the study performed parameters analysis to achieve the thermal structural integrity and to make it lighter.

  • Profiles development of melt spinning process of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was simulated via a numerical method and the radial temperature distribution was calculated using finite difference method. The spinning speed ranged from 1 km/min to 5 km/min was analyzed and the effect of spinning conditions on the radial temperature distribution was investigated. At low spinning speed, the difference between PLA and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was relatively small. As the spinning speed increased, the difference in velocity profile became prominent. PLA showed a slower spinning speed than PET and solidified more slowly. The temperature difference between the core and surface of the PLA filament reached 4.6 K, which was less than that of PET filament with a difference of 10.4 K. The radial temperature difference increased with increasing the cooling-air velocity and the spinning temperature.

  • The present paper describes the optimum inverse design of 2-D linear cascade airfoil. The pressure coefficient of an airfoil surface is taken as the objective function, and non-orthogonal incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is applied to calculate the pressure coefficient. Both of steepest descent and conjugate gradient method have been used to make the objective function go to zero. The 1st order finite differential method is applied to the searching direction and the golden section method is used to compute the searching distance. As a result of the present work, a good convergence to the target airfoil has been obtained.

  • Design sensitivity analysis and topology design optimization for a piezoelectric crystal resonator are developed. The piezoelectric crystal resonator is deformed mechanically when subjected to electric charge on the electrodes, or vice versa. The Mindlin plate theory with higher-order interpolations along thickness direction is employed for analyzing the thickness-shear vibrations of the crystal resonator. Thin electrode plates are masked on the top and bottom layers of the crystal plate in order to enforce to vibrate it or detect electric signals. Although the electrode is very thin, its weight and shape could change the performance of the resonators. Thus, the design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking electrode plates. An optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal topology of electrodes, maximizing the thickness-shear contribution of strain energy at the desired motion and restricting the allowable volume and area of masking plates. The necessary design gradients for the thickness-shear frequency(eigenvalue) and the corresponding mode shape(eigenvector) are computed very efficiently and accurately using the analytical design sensitivity analysis method using the eigenvector expansion concept. Through some demonstrative numerical examples, the design sensitivity analysis method is verified to be very efficient and accurate by comparing with the finite difference method. It is also observed that the optimal electrode design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

  • This study is object to minimum weight design of stiffened laminated composite flat panel. Various buckling load factors are obtained for stiffened laminated composite flat panels with rectangular type longitudinal stiffeners and various aspect ratios, which are made from Carbon/Epoxy USN150 prepreg and are simply-supported on four edges under uniaxial compression.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, mean current density and voltage on the performance of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) by numerical analysis. Two types of flow passages, which are Z-parallel type and Z-counter type, are evaluated to obtain the best current density and temperature distribution. Parametric studies and sensitivity analysis of the PAFC system's operation in single cell are accomplished. A steady state simulation of the entire system is developed using nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The finite difference method and trial and error procedures are used to obtain a solution.

  • Some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. For such plates, the fiber orientations given above behave as specially orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(Mx) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.
