  • Effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the community structure of indigenous microorganisms in Gwangyang Bay sediments was investigated in Mar. & Aug.,2000. Microbial community structure was analyzed using 5'-terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) method. Microbial community structure based on T-RFLP method revealed that community differentiated by sampling period except station 1 located near the stream discharge site from Yeosu Industrial Complex. Even, microbial diversity was higher at stations showed relatively high concentrations of PAHs. The microbial community structure was severely changed during the enrichment culture with 1,000 ppm of PAHs mixture. It was also different between cultivated at 8$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$. The results implied that temperature, poyosity, organic content and etc were more responsible than PAHs on the microbial community structure.

  • In this study, the reforming reaction of vacuum residues (VR), high viscosity oil residues produced from vacuum distillation process of petroleum oil, was carried out using catalytic aquathermolysis reaction. VR showed a prone to decrease the amount of resins and asphaltenes in the constituents, and to increase saturates and aromatics when reacting with steam at 30 bar and above $300^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. When the amount of steam is not enough at this reaction, the asphaltene content in the products was rather increased after the reaction. As a result of the catalytic aquathermolysis using the metal oxide-zeolite catalyst with the decaline as a hydrogen donor, a 10% decrease in resin and asphaltene as well as a 10% increase in the aromatic hydrocarbon were observed. Consequently, the viscosity of VR decreased by 70% after the reaction. GC-Mass spectroscopy showed that the aquathermolysis of VR resulted in the decomposition of the resins and asphaltens into a low molecular weight material.

  • 4-Vinyl-1-cyclohexene diepoxide (VCE)/diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy blends with benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroanti-monate were cured using an electron-beam technique. The effect of DGEBA content to VCE on cure behavior, thermal stabilities, and mechanical properties was investigated. The composition of VCE/DGEBA blend system vaned within 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100 wt%. The cure behavior and thermal stability of the cured specimens was monited by near-infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Also, the critical stress intensity factor ($_{4}$) test of the cured specimens was performed to study the mechanical interfacial properties. As a result, the decreases of short side-chain structure and chain scission were observed in NIR measurements as the DGEBA content increases, resulting in varying the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. And, the initial decomposition temperature (IDT), temperature of maximum weight loss (T$\_$max/), and decomposition activation energy (E$\_$d/) as thermal stability factors were increased with increasing the DGEBA content. These results could be explained by mean of decreasing viscosity, stable aromatic ring structure, and grafted interpenetrating polymer network with increasing of DGEBA content. Also, the maximum $_{4}$ value showed at mixing ratio of 40:60 wt% in this blend system. in this blend system.

  • Fracture behaviors of polycarbonate (PC)/polyestrercarbonate (PEC) blends and their miscibility have been examined to find out the mechanism of ductilie-brittle transition of fracture behavior which would be a main governing factor on the thickness sensitivity of impact strength of PC. $T_g$ measurement showed that PEC with a carbonate content higher than 30 mol% was miscible with PC. In the notched Izod impact test of PC, ductile-brittle transition occurred in the range of 4 to 5 mm thickness. The impact strength of miscible PC/PEC5 blends ductile-fractured in the thin specimens decreased with increasing PEC5 content, which was in accordance with the decrease of elongation at break in tensile test. In the brittle fracture of the thick specimens, the impact strength was well correlated with the plastic zone size in the vicinity of the notch tip.

  • A series of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) based hot melt adhesives containing different types and compositions of tackifier resins were prepared to investigate their rheological behavior and T-peel adhesion strength on polyurethane (PU) elastomeric sheets. C5 aliphatic hydrocarbon resin (C5 resin), C9 aromatic hydrocarbon resin (C9 resin), hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene resin ($H_2$-DCPD resin), and dicyclopentadiene and acrylic monomer copolymer resin (DCPD-acrylic resin) were used as the tackifiers for the hot melt adhesives. To determine the polarity of the tackifiers, their oxygen contents were analyzed, and the DCPDacrylic resin was found to contain an oxygen content higher than the other tackifiers. Only the DCPD-acrylic resin showed complete miscibility with EVA and the homogeneous phase of the hot melt adhesive blends at all compositions. The T-peel adhesion strength between the hot melt adhesives and polyurethane elastomeric sheets was mainly affected by the polarity of the tackifier resins in the hot melt adhesives, rather than by the storage moduli, G', of the hot melt adhesives themselves.

  • Duckweed (Lemna perpusilla J. Torrey) is a typical floating aquatic macrophyte that has been used for evaluating phytotoxicity of toxicants. In this study, we evaluated the responses of duckweed to PAHs and ammonium as toxicants that frequently affect the growth of plants in polluted industrial and agricultural areas. As the duckweed is growing in aquatic environment, the PAHs and ammonium were incorporated into nutrient solution and the fronds were cultured hydroponically. Frond growth was responded differentially to the concentration and type of PAHs. The severe inhibition of frond growth was observed in the treatment of fluorene. Fluoranthene and pyrene, however, showed weak inhibition of frond growth. The latter PAHs that showed weak inhibition did not reduced frond number at the low concentration of 30 ppm. Pigment contents were also responded differentially. Phenanthrene and fluorene reduced chlorophyll content more strongly than fluoranthene and pyrene. Carotenoids, well-known antioxidative compound, was relatively increased at the low concentration of PAHs up to 30 ppm by the treatment of fluoranthene and pyrene, suggesting an increased antioxidative activity in fronds. Ammonium treatment showed higher inhibitory effect even low concentration of 3 mM.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as naphthalene, are released into the aquatic environment and have been identified as endocrine effects on marine organisms. Naphthalene makes up the highest fraction of PAHs in oil and shows the strong toxicity to aquatic organisms. I analyzed 24h-median lethal concentration (24h-$LC_{50}$) for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus to study the acute toxicity of naphthalene. Bioconcentrations in the gill, liver, kidney and muscle of olive flounder were analyzed after to 6 naphthalene concentrations of 0, 1000, 1800, 3200, 5600 and 10000 ${\mu}g/L$. Olive flounder has 24h-$LC_{50}$ value of 2410.76 ${\mu}g/L$ in Large group, and 2230.67 ${\mu}g/L$ in Samll group. Naphthalene concentration was varied with tissues. The concentrations of naphthalene were much higher in liver and kidney than in gill and muscle.

  • The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content in sewage sludge and in farm soils were determined by gas chromatography linked to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with use 2-ethylantracene as internal standards. Twelve PAH were identified in both sludges with naphthalene ($0.78{\mu}g/g$) being the most predominant in industrial sludge and pyrene ($0.26{\mu}g/g$) in municipal sludge. The total PAR content in industrial sludge and in municipal sludge were $1.74{\mu}g/g$ and $1.19{\mu}g/g$ respectively. PAH were contained in paddy soils and the concentration were very low in the range of $0.01-0.04{\mu}g/g$. The total PAH content in industrial and in municipal sludge were about 9.2 times and 6.3 times greater than in paddy soils ($0.19{\mu}g/g$).

  • Volatile flavor compounds and free amino acids in untreated and hydrolysate pen shell by-product produced with APL 440 protease were compared by vacuum simultaneous steam distillation-solvent extraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A total of 109 volatile flavor compounds were detected in hydrolysate (65 compounds) or the 109 volatile flavor compounds were detected in untreated pen shell by-product (88). These compounds were composed of aldehydes(16), ketones(17), alcohols(31), nitrogen containing compounds (16), aromatic hydrocarbon compounds(8), esters(3), and miscellaneous compounds (17). Levels of aldehydes and aromatic hydrocarbons decreased after hydrolysis, whereas levels of nitrogen containing compounds increased 3 times than in untreated pen shell by-product. Taurine, known to be having a physiological function, was accounted for 31.25% of total amino acids in hydrolysate.

  • In this study, the effect of biomass torrefaction on the thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of cork oak was investigated. The thermal and catalytic pyrolysis behavior of cork oak (CO) and torrefied CO (TCO) were evaluated by comparing their thermogravimetric (TG) analysis results and product distributions of bio-oils obtained from the fast pyrolysis using a fixed bed reactor. TG and differential TG (DTG) curves of CO and TCO revealed that the elimination amount of hemicellulose in CO increased by applying the higher torrefaction temperature and longer torrefaction time. CO torrefaction also decreased the oil yield but increased that of solid char during the pyrolysis because the contents of cellulose and lignin in CO increased due to the elimination of hemicellulose during torrefaction. Selectivities of the levoglucosan and phenolics in TCO pyrolysis oil were higher than those in CO pyrolysis oil. The content of aromatic hydrocarbons in bio-oil increased by applying the catalytic pyrolysis of CO and TCO over HZSM-5 ($SiO_2/Al_2O_3=30$). Compared to CO, TCO showed the higher efficiency on the formation of aromatic hydrocarbons via the catalytic pyrolysis over HZSM-5 and the efficiency was maximized by applying the higher torrefaction and catalytic pyrolysis reaction temperatures of 280 and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively.
