Use of radiocarbon dating is increasing for chronology; however, its variability and discrepancy with existing chronologies can cause doubts in regards to credibility. In this paper, we explore factors that influence radiocarbon dating variabilities. We obtained estimated radiocarbon ages by sending identical samples to several labs multiple times. A Bayesian method was used to analyze the obtained data. From the analysis, we conclude that some factors (such as type of labs and megasamples) can induce variability when estimating radiocarbon age. We identify the size of variability caused by each factor and analyze the estimated variability in each lab corresponds with the reported variability.
It was estimated that wooden warehouses excavated from Bongseon-ri site in Seocheon were built around the 5th century according to the soil layers and construction methods of earthen structures. In order to identify the exact date, three wooden materials (BSMG 01, 06, and 12) from wooden warehouses were analyzed through radiocarbon dating using wiggle match. The outermost ring of BSMG 01 produced a radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of AD 431~551, BSMG 06 produced a date of AD 460~570, and BSMG 12 produced dates of either AD 240~430 or AD 490~510. The common age of the three wooden materials was identified as AD 490-510 and coincided with the original estimated archaeological age. Therefore, this study proved the accuracy of radiocarbon dating using wiggle match.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the wood species of the stern plank and persimmon seed from Daebudo shipwreck No.2 excavated from Daebudo, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si, and Gyeonggi-do by wiggle-matching of radiocarbon measurements. Results of the analysis showed that all the wooden boards of the hull were made from Pinus Hard Pine Group. The other parts of hull and wooden pegs were made from Pinus Hard Pine Group, Castanea spp., Quercus spp. sect. Lepidobalanus, Alnus spp., and Zelkova serrata Makino. Excavated wide-tooth wooden comb and fine-tooth bamboo comb were made from Acer spp. and Bambusoideae. Excavated rope was made from Pueraria thunbergiana Benth. The stern plank, wooden support, and persimmon stone showed ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date(95.4% confidence interval) of AD 1151-1224. This indicated that the Daebudo shipwreck No.2 occurred during the early or middle 12-13th century. Our radiocarbon dating results confirmed the date speculated by archeologists based on the ceramic style.

The Jangdo wetland is located on a very gentle slope of the mountain area in Daejangdo island, Shinan-gun, Korea, in which the area of the watershed is estimated at 147,000 m2. The wetland has been regarded as a peat bog without any sedimentological evidence. This study was conducted to analyze the geomorphological and sedimentological characteristics of the wetland. The geographic information system (GIS) was used to analyze the drainage system, and field surveys were conducted to measure the range and depth of wetland deposits. The grain size analysis, organic matter determination, elements analysis and radiocarbon dating were performed on samples from the wetland. As a result, the wetland deposits were about 30 cm deep on average, the mean grain sizes ranged from 50 to 500 μm, and the average C/N ratio was 11.5. The portion of organic matter it contained was only 5~26%, which did not satisfy the peat standards. The radiocarbon ages from the wetland deposits range 180±50 14C yr BP to modern, which indicated that natural and anthropogenic interferences including agricultural activities have continuously happened. We conclude that the Jangdo wetland is still in its infancy, not a steady state, so that it could be very sensitive to a small disturbance.

A coastal dune field, located at Kimnyong-Wolchung beach in Jejudo, Korea, extends alongshore for about 4 km, with dunes extending inland about 6 km. Detailed geomorphological analysis of the area was carried out by using areal photography and Landsat images. Samples were collected across two transects, and physical and chemical properties are analyzed to detect the variation of both properties depending on distance form the beach. Paleosol layers found during the field trip suggest that dune emplacement is episodic. Radiocarbon dates from nearby Hyupjae beach indicate that dunes have been formed during the late Holocene by the disturbance of calcareous materials.
Absolute ages for three pieces of organic materials such as wood and shell were determined with radio-carbon concentrations and two potsherds with thermoluminescence measurements. Radiocarbon contents of each sample were compared with those of modern standard oxalate(NBS SRM4990C) and calculated radiocarbon ages of them. Quartz grains with diameter of $90\sim150{\mu}m$ were extracted from potsherds and used for measuring the archaeodose. Annual dose were calculated with measuring the alpha count rates and water contents and analysing $K_2O$ concentration of both potsherds and soils. Radiocarbon ages of organic materials were in the ranges of $4\sim2C$ BC and Quartz grain techniques for thermoluminescence dating showed 170 BC ud 210 BC respectively. It was found that the results of radiocarbon dating and TL dating were accorded with each other. But the deviations of TL dating have shown 13% and 20% respectively. It need to reduce the deviations.
In this study, radiocarbon dating by the benzene synthesis method and liquid scintillation counting method were performed for the age determination of coal sample at the Cheongok-dong archaeologicalsite, Ulsan. The results of radiocarbon age(BP year) are section Ga #1 $2920\pm50$ BP year, section Ga #5 $3100\pm55$BP year, section Ga #6 $2820\pm60$ BP year, section Na #5 $2650\pm50$ BP year. These ages were converted to calibrated age(AD/BC year) using high precision curve. The products on the excavation of Cheongok-dong archaeological site, Ulsan, section Ga #1 BC 1260-980 BC, section Ga #5 BC1460-1200 BC, section Ga #6 BC 1110~830 BC, section Na #5 BC 920-760 BC. Comparison of samples with radiocarbon and archaeological ages for revealed the approximation.
Structural analysis for a large-scale fault in Maegok-dong, Ulsan, was carried out based on filed-works to investigate the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault as well as its Quaternary slip. As results, a series of repeated stratigraphy, minor faults, fracture zones, and deformation band clusters are observed over a distance of about 100 m in the first studied site consisting of sedimentary rocks, which may indicate the damage zone of a large-scale fault in this site. In the second site, mainly composed of granitic clastic rocks, a large-scale thrust fault is expected based on low-angle dipping faults showing branched and/or merged patterns. Age of the last slip on this fault was restrained as after 33,275 ± 355 yr BP based on radiocarbon dating for organic material included in the gouge zone. Dimension of fault damage zone, dominant sense of slip, and age of the slip event associated with the fault suggest that these structures have a close relationship with the Ulsan Fault and/or Yeonil Tectonic Line, which are well-known large-scale neotectonic structural features around the study area. Therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the faults in detail based on structural geology and paleoseismology in order to ensure seismic and geologic stability of the buildings under construction, and to prevent geologic hazards in this area.
It is very important to determine the age of the Cultural Properties in archeology. In about 1950, W.F. Libby and a team of scientists at the University of Chicago developed the Radiocarbon Dating technique. Radiocarbon($^14$C) Dating is probably one of the most widely used and best known absolute dating methods. Radiocarbon ages are conventionally specified to the year 1950. This year is 0 BP year. BP is the initial of Before Present. The $^14$C within an organism is continually decaying into stable carbon isotopes. When $^14$C decays, it emits a $\beta$ - particle with an energy content of 156 KeV and becomes 14N. Only the $\beta$ - particle is detected by Liquid Scintillation Counting. $^14$C has a half life of 5730 years. It has been used to date samples as old as 50,000 years. Radiocarbon determinations can be obtained on organic material : wood, charcoal, shell, etc. The results of radiocarbon dating using Benzene Synthesizer and Liquid Scintillation Counter are KCP539 $4030\pm60$BP year, KCP540 $3980\pm60$BP year, KCP575 $4870\pm50$, KCP576 $100\pm50$BP year, KCP577 $130\pm50$BP yea and KCP578 $210\pm70$BP year.
Tephrochronology uses regional tephra for age dating and stratigraphic correlations. Regional tephras are important in Quaternary geology and archaeology because they can be used as stratigraphic time-markers. In this review, identification and dating methods of tephra are summarized. In addition, the characteristics of regional tephras in terrestrial deposits of the Korean Peninsula are elaborated, and geological applications and limitations of the regional tephra layers are also discussed. So far, AT, Ata, and Kb-Ks tephra layers from Kyushu, Japan have been found in Pleistocene paleosol, marine terrace deposits, and lacustrine deposits in Korea. Also, although not officially confirmed, Aso-4 tephra is likely to occur in terrestrial deposits. The regional tephra layers are vital for dating, especially with regard to sediments over 50 ka beyond the range of radiocarbon dating, and for dating of active faults. Furthermore, it can provide important information for preparing countermeasures against volcanic disasters. However, in order to use the tephra layer geologically, it must be confirmed whether it is a primary deposit based on sedimentological study.
