  • Panorama of dental radiation generators can observe the wide anatomical structures of oral and maxillofacial areas but there can be distortion of lengths, angles, or shapes. CBCT can diagnose 3D images and get the ones whose errors by superposition and interference are remarkably smaller between anatomical structures. But the quality of the images by movement of subjects can be lowered as it takes long to diagnose them. And if there are impermeable radiation objects like metal in mouths, impermeable radiation lines can radially appear with the objects as center. This study tries to analyze accuracy of panorama and CBCT and get useful anatomical information in dental treatment by comparing the length of wisdom teeth which were measured by Panorama and CBCT with the teeth which were actually extracted and analyzing distortion of the teeth. The test result could be found that Panorama is expanded by average 7.3% as the errors of Panorama and Digital Vernier Caliper range from 110.7% to 103.9%. The length of wisdom teeth which were measured in CBCT and Digital Vernier Caliper could be found that the error range is 1.3%. And the length of wisdom teeth which were measured in Panorama and Digital Vernier Caliper has found that the error range shows 7.3%. So it could be found that the images of CBCT is about 6% more exact than those of Panorama. It could be found that CBCT shows the more exact images than those of Panorama. But because the examination expenses of CBCT are higher than those of Panorama and exposure dose of CBCT is much more than that of Panorama, it is thought to find proper ways in examination.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors of perception by inpatients of the Medical Examination institutions about exposure to radioactivity at the time of radioactive examination, providing basic information for making educational materials aimed to change their perception. Most of those patients, 72.0% responded that CT was a type of radioactive examination bringing highest exposure to radiosensitivity. Most of the subjects, 63.5% said that a body part most vulnerable to exposure to radiosensitivity was the genital gland at the time of radiosensitivity examination. And most of the participants, or 29.0% responded that they obtained information about radiation from TVs or newspapers. Among the surveyed patients, men were higher in scores for factors of the perception of radiation such as recognition of radiation, harmfulness of radiation, psychological state at the time of radioactive examination, prevention of exposure to radioactivity and necessity of radiation that women were, with statistically significant differences between the two groups. These findings suggest that it is urgently needed to develop an education program which helps patients better perceive exposure to radioactivity and that radiologists should be very careful to reduce the does of that exposure. If patients better perceive radiation, they would be less anxious and less exposed to radioactivity when receiving the radioactive examination.

  • Image registration is a fundamental task in image processing used to match two or more images. It gives new information to the radiologists by matching images from different modalities. The objective of this study is to develop 2D image registration algorithm for PET/CT and CT images acquired by different systems at different times. We matched two CT images first (one from standalone CT and the other from PET/CT) that contain affluent anatomical information. Then, we geometrically transformed PET image according to the results of transformation parameters calculated by the previous step. We have used Affine transform to match the target and reference images. For the similarity measure, mutual information was explored. Use of particle swarm algorithm optimized the performance by finding the best matched parameter set within a reasonable amount of time. The results show good agreements of the images between PET/CT and CT. We expect the proposed algorithm can be used not only for PET/CT and CT image registration but also for different multi-modality imaging systems such as SPECT/CT, MRI/PET and so on.

  • Korea Research Reactor (KRR) 1&2 has shut down and through preparatory activities, its decommissioning activities are underway. As its decommissioning activities have been done over several years, its relevant data have been spreaded with various type and media all over the discrete place and inadvertently managed, As a result, managing and assessing data of KRR 1&2 has been difficult and complex and its data cannot be evaluated. By developing the decommissioning database system of KRR 1&2 the data of decommissioning activities can be correctly evaluated, being systematically managed and objectively assessed. Finally, the decommissioning project of KRR 1&2 have come to more effectively accomplished. As the data of decommissioning activities can be at last systematically analyzed and objectively assessed, the decommissioning project of KRR 1&2 would be more effectively accomplished.

  • Purpose : Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy(VMAT) has the advantage of uniformly and precisely irradiating the tumor to the shape of the tumor while reducing the risk of radiation damage to normal tissues. such as brain cancer, head and neck cancer and prostate cancer, It is being used for treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of the Jaw-Tracking technique(JTT) in VMAT for brain and head and neck cancer. Materials and Methods : We selected eight patients with brain and head and neck cancer(4 Brain, 4 head and neck) who were treated with the VMAT treatment technique. Contouring information of the patient's tumor and normal organ was fused to the Rando phantom using the deformable registration of Velocity(Varian, USA). A treatment plan was developed using the Varian Eclipse(ver 15.5, Varian, USA) with the same patient actual beam parameters except for the use of jaw-tracking. As the evaluation index, the maximum dose and mean dose of target and OAR were compared and a portal dosimetry was performed for the treatment plan verification. Results : When using JTT, the relative dose of OAR decreased by 5.24 % and the maximum dose by 7.05 %, respectively, compared with the Static-Jaw technique(SJT). In the various OARs, the mean dose and maximum dose reduction ranges ranged from 0.01 to 3.16 Gy and from 0.12 to 6.27 Gy, respectively. In the case of the target, the maximum dose of GTV, CTV, PTV decreased by 0.17 %, 0.43 %, and 0.37 % in JTT, and the mean dose decreased by 0.24 %, 0.47 % and 0.47 %, respectively. Gamma analysis The JTT and SJT passing rates were $98{\pm}1.73%$ and $97{\pm}1.83%$ on the basis of 3 % / 3 mm, respectively. Comparing the doses of all OARs applied to the experiment, it was found that the use of JTT resulted in a significant decrease in dose due to additional jaw shielding besides MLC than SJT. Conclusion : In radiation therapy using VMAT treatment plan, we can apply JTT in the case of adjacent tumor and normal organs such as brain cancer and head and neck cancer, and in radiotherapy required large field and high energy caused increase leakage dose through MLC. It is considered that the target dose of PTV can be increased by lowering the dose of normal tissue surrounding the tumor.

  • Agricultural pesticides may cause certain biological risks since they are widely used to eradicate pests. Agricultural disasters may arise even from the possibility of their synergistic interaction with other harmful enviromnetal factors. The effect of pesticide on radiation-induced DNA damage in human blood lymphocytes was evaluated by the single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay. The lymphocytes, with or without pretreatment of the pesticide, were exposed to 0-2.0 Gy of $^60 CO$ gamma ray. Significantly increased tail moment, which was a marker of DNA strand breaks in SCGE assay, showed an excellent dose-response relationship. The present study confirms that the pesticide has the cytotoxic effect on lymphocytes and that it shows the synergistic interaction with radiation on DNA damage as well. The results may have a role of providing biological information necessary for the prevention of environmental disaster.
