  • The purpose of this study is to find out the actual status of the math after-school program in the elementary school and the content of the program. We survey the 115 math external math lecturers of the 100 elementary schools in Busan and analyze the results. Research questions are set as follows. 1. What is the status of the elementary math after-school? 2. How is the content of the program of the elementary math after-school? The results of the survey are analyzed as follows. First, any of the external math after-school lecturer did not major in math education and 87% of them majored in another discipline. Second, 47% of the external math after-school lecturers are employed by privately-held companies. Third, 64.4% of the content of the after-school programs is the supplement and deepening of the regular math class. Fourth, 76.5% of the time of the first class of the math after-school program is 50 minutes and 46% of the math after-school opens 5 classes per a week. Fifth, most programs consist of the problem-solving style class. Sixth, it is difficult to run the math after-school according to students' level and grade. Based on the above discussion, I suggest the following. First, math after-school class should be the action-oriented class to motivate the positive and interested participation of the students. Second, lecturer training and various math class programs is required to improve the quality of the math after-school class.

  • This research aimed at investigating policy change process of after school contracting out and suggesting future alternative. Also, this research conducted a literature search for the research data related to policy and related regulations. As the result of investigation, the Ministry of Education established management plan for after school, however there have been changes in policy, e.g. contracting out was executed from 2004 to 2008 upon autonomy of unit school through school steering committee deliberation(consultation), while standardized procedure was conducted, which was suggested in 'After school operation guideline', produced in cooperation between the Ministry of Education and municipal ministry of education from 2008 to 2015, while since 2016, contract law should be applied when after school contracting out is adopted. Policy change since 2016 is based on the legal necessity that contract law should be followed as the contract size of after school contracting out has become larger along with necessity of clarity of after school contracting out. Nevertheless, there's a worry that quality of after school education could be degraded due to lowest price bidding. The government suggested an alternative to prevent excessive price competition by paying a regular rate of basic price as personnel expenses, however this research suggested a plan to enact an ordinance in regard of specialty of after school educational activities and cities and provinces as the fundamental solution plan.

  • The objective of this study is to describe the status of operation of after-school science activities in elementary school and offer suggestions for the activation of such programs by targeting parents who participated in an open class, and examining their recognition of the program. To achieve this, announcement sheets for after-school science activities in 809 elementary schools in Gyeonggi-do were collected to examine the class names, class fees, material costs, and management status of class hours. In addition, 36 parents who participated in an open class were targeted, and their recognition of the program was analyzed using the results of a questionnaire. A draft of the questionnaire was developed by revising and complementing the 2013 customer satisfaction survey of the living science class of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. The final questionnaire was completed by consulting 1 science education professor and 12 Master's candidates in science education for advice on the validity of the questionnaire content and terminology. The collected data were analyzed using a statistical program. Based on the results of the study, the following suggestions are proposed for the activation of after-school science activities in elementary school. First, the needs of education consumers (parents) should be identified and reflected persistently to activate after-school science activities in elementary school. Second, a science program that reflects the demand and choice of education consumers (parents) needs to be developed for the continuous activation of after-school science activities in elementary school.
