  • We propose an efficient vehicle detection and classification algorithm for an electronic toll collection using the feature which is robust to abrupt intensity change between consecutive frames. The local correlation coefficient between wavelet transformed input and reference images is used as such a feature, which takes advantage of textural similarity. The usefulness of the proposed feature is analyzed qualitatively by comparing the feature with the local variance of a difference image, and is verified by measuring the improvements in the separability of vehicle from shadowy or shadowless road for a real test image. Experimental results from field tests show that the proposed vehicle detection and classification algorithm performs well even under abrupt intensity change due to the characteristics of sensor and occurrence of shadow.

  • This paper is to propose a method to enhance the connectivity of the broken structures. The pixels to be connected are found by a decision rule which is based on the intensity and gradient information of the neighboring pixels. The intensity of the pixel, if it is decided to be filled, is increased so that the pixel together with its neighbors looks connected. The anisotropic diffusion follows to make the connected structural region look more natural. The same structure matrices have been used both to get gradient information and to decide the direction of diffusion to improve the computational speed. It has been shown by the experiments on the real ultrasound images that the broken structural regions can be connected by the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes an efficient moving picture compression for video sequences with luminance variations. In the proposed algorithm, the luminance variation parameters are estimated and local motions are compensated. To detect the frame required luminance compensation, we employ the frame classification based on the cross entropy between histograms of two successive frames, which can reduce the computational redundancy. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields a higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) than that of the conventional methods, with a low computational load, when the video scene contains large luminance variations.

  • In this paper, we propose improved binary tree vector quantization with consideration of spatial sensitivity which is one of the human visual properties. We combine weights in consideration with the responsibility of human visual system according to changes of three primary color in blocks of images with the process of splitting nodes using eigenvector in binary tree vector quantization. Also we propose the novel quality measure of the quantization images that applies MTF(modulation transfer function) to luminance value of quantization error of color image. The test results show that the proposed method generates the quantized images with fine color and performs better than the conventional method in terms of clustering the similar regions. Also the proposed method can get less quantized level images and can reduce the resource occupied by the quantized image.

  • Wrinkles are one of the main features of skin aging. Conventional image processing-based wrinkle detection is difficult to effectively cope with various skin images. In particular, Wrinkle extraction performance is significantly decreased when the wrinkles are not strong and similar to the surrounding skin. In this paper, deep learning is applied to extract wrinkles from microscopic skin images. In general, the microscope image is equipped with a wide-angle lens, so the brightness at the boundary area of the image is dark. In this paper, to solve this problem, the brightness of the skin image is estimated and corrected. In addition, We apply the structure of semantic segmentation network suitable for wrinkle extraction. The proposed method obtained an accuracy of 99.6% in test experiments on skin images collected in our laboratory.

  • In this paper, a DCT image coding algorithm using the human visual property is proposed. Human visual is relatively sensitive to noise in the darker region, insensitive to noise in the brighter region. This property was proved by Weber's law through psycovisual experiment. Weber's law states that the just noticeable difference (j.n.d.) is proportional to intensity. Therefore, the implication of this observation for image processing is that reducing noise in the darker region is more important than reducing noise in the brighter region. In this proposed coding scheme AC coefficients in the darker region are more finely quantized than those in the brighter region. Results showed that, at low bit rate, the subjective quality of reconstructed images by proposed coding scheme is improved than that of coding scheme without considering human visual property.

  • There are many visual enhancement devices for people with low vision. However, almost conventional devices have been simple magnifying and high cost. The symptoms of people with low vision are very variety. It needs to control of image magnifying, brightness, and contrast to improve the visuality. We developed a portable microdisplay driver and device for visual enhancement. This device based on our suggested four methods such as image magnifying, specific color control, BLU brightness control, and visual axis control using a prism. The basic clinical experiments of the proposed Head Mounted Visual Enhancement Device (HMVED) have been performed. The results show beneficiary effects compared with conventional devices, and improve the life quality on people with low vision on account of low weight, low cost, and easy portability.

  • Mammography is the most common technique for the early detection of breast cancer. To diagnose correctly and treat of breast cancer efficiently, many image enhancement methods have been developed. This paper presents a nonlinear image enhancement method for the enhancement of digital mammogram. The proposed method is composed of a nonlinear function for brightness improvement and a nonlinear filter for contrast enhancement. The nonlinear function improves the brightness of dark area and extends the dynamic range of bright area, and the nonlinear filter efficiently enhances the specific regions and objects of the mammogram. The final enhanced image was obtained by combining the processed image with the nonlinear function and the filtered image with the nonlinear filter. The proposed nonlinear image enhancement method was confirmed the enhanced performance comparing with other existing methods.

  • The H.264/AVC standard uses efficient inter prediction technologies improving the coding efficiency by reducing temporal redundancy between images. However, since H.264/AVC does not efficiently encode a video sequence that occurs a local illumination change, the coding efficiency of H.264/AVC is decreased when a local illumination change happens in video. In this paper, we propose an improved motion compensation using adjacent pixels and motion vector refinement to efficiently encode local illumination changes. The proposed method always improves the BD-PSNR (Bj$\o$ntegaard Delta Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of 0.01 ~ 0.21 dB compared with H.264/AVC.

  • An LED lighting which adjusted brightness according to the surround ambient implemented using PWM technology and power devices. To measure the brightness of surround ambient a CdS sensor was used. A control board for the generation of the PWM signal was made using a MCU and duty ratio was controlled according to light intensity of surround ambient of the system. To drive the LED lamps which require high-voltage and high-current power devices were used for switching the DC power supply. Measurement results show that the IGBT is excellent as only lineality but the PowerBJT is more good to consider to efficiency and cost.
