  • To establish the systematic biological control system for various insect pests in strawberry under plastic houses, we were investigated the biological traits of lesser strawberry aphid, Chaetosiphon minus (Forbes), as a target pest. The lesser strawberry aphid is adapted to low temperatures while examining the availability of and selecting useful natural enemies. The development, survivorship and reproduction of lesser strawberry aphid were evaluated at four constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 25℃). The developmental periods of the nymphal stages ranged from 41.7 d at 10℃ to 9.8 d at 25℃. The developmental threshold temperature and degree day of nymphal stages are 5.5℃ and 185 DD. The reproduction rate (R0) was higher at 20℃ (30.16) than at 25℃ (22.38). The 50 % survival rate and maximum longevity of adult females were 31 d and 59 d at 20℃, and 25 d and 36 d at 25℃, respectively. The average progeny per female was 35 at 20℃, and 26 at 25℃. We confirmed that compared to other strawberry aphids under plastic houses, the lesser strawberry aphid is more adapted to lower temperatures. It is, therefore, necessary to commercialize natural enemies such as syrphid flies with high activity at low temperatures.

  • This study was conducted to estimate relationship between temperature and egg development of Nannophya pygmaea, an endangerd dragonfly species in Korea, using eight different temperature conditions (17, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, 33, and $36^{\circ}C$). Eggs of N. pygmaea were collected from female adults inhabited a small wetland in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, in June 2007. As a result, hatching rates were 2.86, 17.09, 24.32, 39.67, 34.43, 40.57, 44.79, and 1.75% at 17, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, 33, and $36^{\circ}C$, respectively. The nonlinear model of the temperature related to egg development was well fit to the modified Sharpe and DeMichele model. The derived lower developmental threshold temperature for egg hatching was $14.02^{\circ}C$(y=0.005988x-0.084, $r^2$=0.99), and the derived optimal development temperature was $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to know the effects of temperature conditions on the growth and oviposition of the brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens $St{\aa}l$. Results obtained were to predict the timing of the BPH control by measuring population dynamics of the BPH in response to temperature fluctuations upon migration of the insects in paddy fields. Developmental and ovipositional rates under constant and alternating temperature conditions were observed in a plant growth cabinet. Hatchabilities of eggs of the BPH were the highest at $25^{\circ}C$ and were decreased below or above the optimum temperature. Egg periods were the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and prolonged with decreasing temperature, but retarded at higher temperature above $30^{\circ}C$. Adult emergence rates were the highest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and reduced with decreasing temperature, and no adult emerged at $32.5^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. Developmental period of nymph was the shortest at both $27.5^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but extended with decreasing temperature. Female longevity was increased with decreasing temperature and the male longevity was the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$. Preoviposition period was the shortest at $32.5^{\circ}C$, but prolonged with decreasing temperature. It was about 6.5 times longer at $17.5^{\circ}C$ than that at $32.5^{\circ}C$. Number of eggs oviposited per female was the greatest at $25^{\circ}C$, but decreased at the temperature below or above the optimum. Under the same total effective day-degrees, hatchabilty at the alternating temperature was about 10% higher than that at the constant temperature but egg period at the alternating temperature was nearly identical as that at the constant. Under the $22^{\circ}C$ condition, emergence rate was about 8% higher at the alternating temperature than that at the constant, however, at the $28^{\circ}C$, the rate was about 8% higher at the constant than that at the alternating. Nymphal period was about $4{\sim}6$ days longer at the alternating temperature than that at the constant. Under the same total effective day-degrees in adult stage, both longevity and oviposition period were longer at alternating temperature than those at the constant. Number of eggs oviposited per female was also higher at the alternating. Longevities of females reared under $28^{\circ}C$ of constant temperature was the longest no matter what temperatures they were exposed after the emergence. This result seems to be indicating that female longevity is greatly influenced by the temperature to which they were exposed durings immature stages. Preoviposition period was affected by the temperature exposed during the nympal and adult stage whereas the number of eggs oviposited was affected by the temperature during the adult stage only. Based on the results from this study, the developmental threshold temperatures seem to be $14.12^{\circ}C$ for eggs, $14.76^{\circ}C$ for nymphs, $9.62^{\circ}C$ for adults, and $15.95^{\circ}C$ for preoviposition period. Estimated values of the total effective temperature for completing each stage were 141.25 day-degrees for eggs, 167.83 day-degrees for nymphs, 349.64 day-degrees for adults, and 58.60 day-degrees for preoviposition.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of temperatures and food sources on the egg and larval developmentof the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura Fabricius. The hatchability of egg masses of S. liturawas 100% on the leaf of soybean, perilla and sweet potato in any given temperature regimes, while the hatchabilitywas only 65-8796 when reared on the pulp paper and decreased as temperature increased. Egg durationwas not significantly different among different food sources within each temperature. However, egg duration at32$^{\circ}$C was shorter than that at 24$^{\circ}$C and 28$^{\circ}$C. During the early larval development, at 28$^{\circ}$C and 32$^{\circ}$C the larvafed on sweet potato leaf was heavier than those fed on soybean and perilla leaves and the opposite case wastrue during mid-larval development stage. However, larval weight at 24$^{\circ}$C was heavier on sweet potato leafthan that on soybean and perilla leaves until 12 days after hatching. This result was probably due to relativelyslower developmental rate at 24$^{\circ}$C compared to 28$^{\circ}$C and 32$^{\circ}$C. The mean larval mortality was 68.896, 44.5%and 33.8% at 24$^{\circ}$C. 28$^{\circ}$C and 32"C, respectively. The lowest mortality was observed on soybena leaf and followedby perilla and sweet potato leaves, and artificial diet regardless of temperature conditions. The durationwas the shortest when they fed on soybean leaf, and followed by perilla and sweet potato leaves and artificialdiet. Larval durations were 23.6-30.4 days at 24$^{\circ}$C. 18.6-22.3 days at 28$^{\circ}$C and 14.5-18.0 days at 32$^{\circ}$C. Thethreshold temperatures of egg and larva of S. litura were about 6.l"C and 10.9"C, respectively.t 6.l"C and 10.9"C, respectively.pectively.

  • Development of Bracon hebetor Say parasitizing Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella (Hubner) was studied at five temperature conditions (17, 20, 25, 28 and 32$\pm$0.5$^{\circ}C$) under a photoperiod of 16 : 8 (L : D). Developmental period (mean$\pm$s.e.) of B. hebetor from egg to eclosion decreased from 28.6$\pm$0.50 to 9.3 $\pm$0.09 days and 28.1 $\pm$0.51 to 9.2$\pm$0.09 days for female and male, respectively, as the temperature increased from 17 to $32^{\circ}C$. The combination model provided a good description of the relationship between temperature and development. The low temperature thresholds were estimated to be 14.0, 12.8, 15.1$^{\circ}C$ for development of egg, larva and pupa. The thresholds for normal development (outside of the boundary layer of the development) were 14.0, 17.5, $15.1^{\circ}C$ for egg, larva and pupa, respectively, indicating that the larval stage is more sensitive to the low temperature than the other stages. The results suggested that the present B. hebetor population could be another ecological race adapting to the seasonal temperature conditions of this area.

  • The developmental period(mean $\pm$ SE) of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum was studied on brown rice at four constant temperature(25, 28, 34, $36^{\circ}C$ $\pm$ $0.5^{\circ}C$, RH 70%)conditions. Based on the results, the lower and the upper developmental threshold temperature for the beetle were also estimated. The duration of the egg stage was estimated to be 7.6 $\pm$ 0.25, 4.8 $\pm$ 0.10, 3.0 $\pm$ 0.03 and 2.5 $\pm$ 0.09 days at 25, 28, 34, $36^{\circ}C$, respectively. That of the larval stage was estimated to be 53.3 $\pm$ 1.49, 33.4 $\pm$ 0.57, 30.6 $\pm$ 0.70, 31.0 $\pm$ 1.18; that of the pupal stage to be 12.1 $\pm$ 0.17, 7.8 $\pm$ 0.09, 5.7 $\pm$ 0.09, 5.0 $\pm$ 0.07 ; that of the overall period which spans from eggs to the adult emergence to be 72.3 $\pm$ 1.67, 46.0 $\pm$ 0.55, 39.4 $\pm$ 0.64, 38.7 $\pm$ 1.15 days at 25, 28, 34, $36^{\circ}C$, respectively. The duration of the egg and the pupal stage were similar to those of the results reared on other diets such as wheat and maize. Fed on brown rice, however, the duration of the larval stage was significantly retarded than on wheat. The mortality of the beetle during ,development was higher on brown rice than on wheat reported, indicating that brown rice is a poor diet compared with wheat. The lower developmental threshold temperature was estimated to be $20.0^{\circ}C$ for all stages of the beetle. The upper one was estimated to be $40.2^{\circ}C$ for the overall stage. The modal value of the moulting times during the larval stage was 7. However, as temperature increased,.the frequency of the beetle that moulted more than 7 times became higher. The sex ratio of the beetle was not affected by temperature.

  • Some biological phenomena of Anagrus incarnatus Haliday, an egg parasitoid of planthopper, were studied under three different constant temperatures. Duration from egg to adult emergence of the parasitoid from the BPH eggs were 21.5, 13.6 and 10.6 days under $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Rate of the development was highly correlated with temperature. The critical temperature was estimated as $10.0^{\circ}C$ and the effective degree days was 210.3 day-degree. Durations for the development of A. incarnatus under 25$\pm$$1^{\circ}C$ (16L : 8D) were 12.4, 12.5 and 12.1 days from eggs of N. lugens, S. furcifera and L. striatellus, respectively. Duration of the development of A. incarnatus from 1, 3, 5, 7 days old BPH eggs were 12.5, 12.1, 12.9 days, respectively. The average longevity of adult was 5.3 days under 25$\pm$$1^{\circ}C$. Number of the ovarian and practically oviposited eggs were 34.8$\pm$28 and 28.3$\pm$0., respectively. Female A. incarnatus laid most of the eggs within few days after the emergence ; over 60% within 24 hours, nearly 90% upto the 2nd day, and nearly 100% upto the 3rd day.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of temperatures on the egg and nymphal development, adult longevity and oviposition of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg, using Saealkong seed as food sources in fibrous nylon-tube at four different temperatures (20, 24, 28 and $32^{\circ}C$). Hatchability showed the highest value of 100% at $28^{\circ}C$ and decreased with increasing temperature. Egg duration ranged from 7 days at $32^{\circ}$ to 16.7 days at $20^{\circ}C$. Instar duration was longer with increasing instar stage. Nymphal duration was 38 days at $20^{\circ}C$, 30 days at $24^{\circ}C$, 23 days at $28^{\circ}C$, and 18 days at $32^{\circ}C$ Emergence rates to adult were 16, 41, 72 and 68% at 20, 24, 28 and $32^{\circ}C$, respectively. Female adult longelity ranged from a minimum 20 days at $20^{\circ}C$ to a maximum 63 days at $28^{\circ}C$, while the longevity of male ranged from 19 days at $20^{\circ}C$ to 60 days at $28^{\circ}C$. Preoviposition duration was shorter with increasing temperature and ranged from 11 days at $20^{\circ}C$ to 5 days at $32^{\circ}C$. Total number of eggs laid per female ranged from a minimum 21 eggs at $20^{\circ}C$ to a maximum 67 eggs at $28^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the estimated lower threshold tempeatures of each developmental stage were $10.3^{\circ}C$ for egg, and 9.3, 12.7, 10.0, 11.0 and 8.7 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th instar, respectively.

  • Under the constant daylength of 13 hours and growth temperatures of 15$^{\circ}C$ to 27$^{\circ}C$, the final number of loaves (FNL) on the main culm was constant as 15 regardless of temperature in rice variety 'Kwanganbyeo'. Leaf appearance rate (LAR) increased with rising temperature and decreased with phenological development. Threshold temperature (T$_{o}$) was not constant across growth stages, but increased with phenological development. Effective accumulated temperature (EAT), which is calculated by the summation of values subtracting T0 from daily mean temperature, is closely related with number of leaves appeared (LA). LA was fitted to bilinear, quadratic, power and logistic function of EAT. Among the functions, logistic function had the best fitness of which coefficient of determination was $R^2$=0.995. Therefore, LAR prediction model was established by differentiating this function in terms of time: (equation omitted). where dL/dt is LAR, T$_1$ is daily mean temperature, L is the number of leaves appeared, and a, b, and c are constants that were estimated as 41.8, 1098.38, and -0.9273, respectively. When predictions of LA were made by LAR prediction model using data independent of model establishment, the observed and predicted LA showed good agreement of $R^2$$\geq$0.99.
