  • The volume ray-casting method is one of the direct volume rendering methods that produces high-quality images as well as manipulates semi-transparent object. Although the volume ray-casting method produces high-quality image by sampling in the region of interest, its rendering speed is slow since the color acquisition process is complicated for repetitive memory reference and accumulation of sample values. Recently, the GPU-based acceleration techniques are introduced. However, they require pre-processing or additional memory. In this paper, we propose efficient point-primitive based method to overcome complicated computation of GPU ray-casting. It presents semi-transparent objects, however it does not require preprocessing and additional memory. Our method is fast since it generates point-primitives from volume dataset during sampling process and it projects the primitives onto the image plane. Also, our method can easily cope with OTF change because we can add or delete point-primitive in real-time.

  • This study analyzed the mediator effect of fear and helping responses on relationship between familiarity and discrimination based on the contact theory. We presented typical vignettes of schizophrenia, depression and alcoholism to 922 adults randomly. All respondents were asked for direct and indirect contact experiences with mental illness, fear and helping responses and discrimination against persons with mental illness. Our findings suggest that contact theory was not supported in every types of mental disorders. In schizophrenia, fear and help were the full mediator between familiarity and discrimination. In depression, only helping response was the mediator between familiarity and discrimination. But in alcoholism, familiarity did not predict discrimination. Based on theses findings, we suggest various anti-stigma strategies depending on the types of mental disorders.

  • Recently the multimedia streaming traffic such as digital audio and video in the Internet has increased tremendously. Unlike TCP, the UDP protocol, which has been used to transmit streaming traffic through the Internet, does not apply any congestion control mechanism to regulate the data flow through the shared network. If this trend is let go unchecked, these traffic will effect the performance of TCP, which is used to transport data traffic, and may lead to congestion collapse of the Internet. To avoid any adverse effort on the current Internet functionality, A study on a new protocol of modification or addition of some functionality to existing transport protocol for transmitting streaming traffic in the Internet is needed. TCP-frienly congestion control mechanism is classified with window-based congestion control scheme and rate-based congestion control scheme. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for improving the transmitting rate on a hybrid TCP-friendly congestion control scheme combined with widow-based and rate-based congestion control for multimedia streaming in the internet.

  • Landslides is mainly induced by a heavy rainfall, earthquake ground motion, and some other factors like soil mechanics, morphological-geological factors etc. Since the starting point of the failure seemed to be originated at a construction site in the study, it is meaningful to find out the relationship between the landslide and the construction. For this study, the slope failure factor was examined carefully to see that the original natural slope had vulnerability and that the complex ground had unstability changed by construction. A field survey was conducted on the original ground surface and filled-up ground. A laboratory test was also conducted to determine the geomechanical properties of soil samples. 2D and 3D limit equilibrium analysis with changing groundwater level were conducted at the failure depth using a seismic refraction survey. The result shows that the factor of safety is similar stability under all condition, but unstable under saturated condition.

  • It is estimated that, in the twenty-first century, 70% of global citizens will live in urban areas. This accelerated urbanization will require a greater need for the building DEM and orthoimagery along with Geographic Information System for urban management. The building DEM requires the detection of outlines showing building shapes. To do this, automatic and semiautomatic building extractions are usually used. However, in cases where automatic extraction is performed directly from the aerial images, accurate building outline extraction is very difficult because of shadow, roof color, and neighboring trees making it hard to discern building roofs. To overcome this problem semiautomatic building extraction was suggested in this paper. When a roof texture was homogeneous, building outline detection was performed by mouse-clicking on a part of the roof. To construct the building outlines when the texture was not homogeneous, a computer program was developed to search out corner points by clicking spots near corner points. The building DEM was generated by taking into account building outlines and heights calculated by image matching.

  • In this paper, we analyzed whether there exists positive relation between firm's global activity and various innovation output and, if it exists, what are the major factors by which innovation outputs can be generated, focusing on the different degree of global activity. We found that for foreign MNC affiliates, their superior information access to existing knowledge is much more important and for non-MNC exporters and domestic MNC parents not only access to existing knowledge but also active investment in new knowledge is important. When we analyze the product and the process innovation separately, we found that for the process innovation information flows from existing knowledge is relatively more important while for product innovation investment in new knowledge and information flows from existing knowledge are almost equally important. Thus in Korea policies that promote both direct R&D activities and information flows should be pursued at the same time to enhance firms' innovativeness.

  • The underground structure, which has infinite or semi-infinite boundary conditions, is subjected by body forces and in-situ stresses. It also has stress concentration, which causes material nonlinear behavior, in the vicinity of the excavated surface. In this paper, some methods which can be used to transform domain integrals into boundary integrals are reviewed in order to analyze the effect of the body forces and the in-situ stresses. First, the domain integral of the body force is transformed into boundary integral by using the Galerkin tensor and divergence theorem. Second, it is transformed by writing the domain integral in cylindrical coordinates and using direct integration. The domain integral of the in-situ stress is transformed into boundary integral applying the direct integral method in cylindrical coordinates. The methodology is verified by comparing the results from the boundary element analysis with those of the finite element analysis. Coupling the above boundary elements with finite elements, the nonlinear behavior that occurs locally in the vicinity of the excavation is analyzed and the results are verified. Thus, it is concluded that the domain integrals of body forces and in-situ stresses could be performed effectively by transforming them into the boundary integrals, and the nonlinear behavior can be reasonably analyzed by coupled nonlinear finite element and boundary element method. The result of this research is expected to he used for the analysis of the underground structures in the effective manner.

  • The aim of this study was to examine fluid excretions and changes in deceased bodies depending on type, location of, and causes of death for hygienic management of funeral homes. Based on the 858 cadavers studied, the average age at the time of death is 68.6 years, 83.0% had illness as the cause of death, and 79.5% passed away in a medical facility. Fluid excretion was observed in 46.2% of the cadavers. In manner of death, 78.8% of deaths -highest percentage- was due to an accident and 10.8% of deaths - lowest percentage- was due to age. Fluid excretion was observed in 46.3% of cadavers from medical facilities, 38.6% of cadavers from homes and 77.4% of cadavers from miscellaneous locations. There were various number of cadavers with recorded immediate, secondary and underlying cause of death; however, the fluid excretion rate was similar. In analyzing the immediate, secondary and underlying cause of death, respiratory and heart disease were the most common causes of death in categories of body organ and system. In terms of fluid excretion, liver disease followed by digestive and circulatory diseases were most common in immediate cause of death. Accidents and miscellaneous circumstances were most common amongst secondary and underlying causes of death for cadavers with fluid excretion. Based on the recorded illnesses of the cadavers, cardiopulmonary failure was most common as evident in 96 cadavers followed by pneumonia and sepsis. Cholangiocarcinoma (73.3%) had the highest rate of fluid excretion followed by pancreatic cancer, severe brain injury and liver cancer amongst categories of illnesses with more than 15 cadavers.

  • This essay begins by discussing the issue of the definition of a catastrophe as a trauma by visual media and the problems that result. We assume a concrete approach towards these problems by examining the process through which 9/11 was defined as a "national trauma" in the exclusion of images of bodies falling from towers, which were some of the most shocking images in the media coverage of 9/11. The choice to exclude images of falling men from American visual media representations of 9/11 goes hand in hand with the tendencies of a contemporary trauma theory. This essay assumes that the representations in the U.S visual media depend on "antimimetic theory," one of the leading contemporary trauma theories, in order to validate its logic, and examines the limitations and problems of the theory. This work aims to examine the issue of the definition of a catastrophe as trauma by visual media on the basis on the "antimimetic theory" and the danger that results. Because the antimimetic theory, which the visual media in the United States uses to define 9/11 as trauma, emphasizes literal and unmediated representation of an external event, it lacks an understanding of the human aspects of the event. There is no way to intervene in the construction and interpretation of the trauma. As a result, the theory discourages active attempts to find a solution to the problems of the people directly connected with the event. Thus, it provides an opening for manipulative intervention of an external power. This essay attempts to provide a critical analysis of the "antimimetic theory" in order to help people who witness catastrophic events through various types of visual media, and to seek an alternative means of experiencing and responding to the trauma, that does not stem from the perspective of specific media outlets or external powers.

  • The assessment and rehabilitation of patients with cognitive dysfunction is a field that currently requires assistive technology. While the paper-and-pencil test, such as the line tracing test (LTT), is one of the most commonly used assessment methods for cognitive dysfunction, it has become time-consuming due to its manual characteristic. The aim of this study was therefore to establish a computer-based real-time assessment system for patients without compromising the usefulness of the conventional paper-and-pencil based user tools. A digital pen-based assessment and rehabilitation system, the ePen System, could eliminate the time required for manual assessment while maintaining the measurement accuracy. The proposed system may assist rehabilitation specialists to assess and diagnose patients with unilateral visual neglect. This system can be applied to a range of assessment and rehabilitation modalities based on pen and paper. It can also be used for various patients such as those with Parkinson's disease, stroke, or different forms of brain lesions.
