  • Methanolysis rate constants were determined for $CH_3O(CO)Cl,\;CH_3S(CO)Cl\;and\;CH_3S(CS)Cl\;in\;CH_3OH-CH_3CN$ mixtures. Results show that the rates are not predominantly influenced by the bulk solvent properties but are partly influenced by specific electrophilic solvation.Polarity of the solvent is not a dominant factor but it nevertheless plays a role in charge stabilization of the $S_N1$ like transition state. The methanolysis proceeds through $S_N1$ mechanism for $CH_3S(CS)Cl$ for which both specific solvation of leaving group by methanol and charge stabilization by a high dielectric medium are important, while for $CH_3O(CO)Cl\;methanolysis occurs\;via\;S_N2$ mechanism in which both of the solvent effects are unimportant.

  • A diverse range of stresses such as heat, cold, salt, ethanol, oxygen starvation or nutrient starvation induces same stress-responsive proteins. This general stress response enhances bacterial survival significantly. In Bacillus subtilis and closely related Gram-positive bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, the general stress response is controlled by the alternative transcription factor ${\sigma}^B$. The activity of ${\sigma}^B$ is regulated post-translationally by a signal transduction network that has been extensively studied in B. subtilis, and serve as a model for L. monocytogenes. The proposed model of L. monocytogenes signal transduction network is similar to that of B. subtilis, but the energy stress pathway is missing. More than 150 general stress proteins belong to ${\sigma}^B$ regulon of B. subtilis and L. monocytogenes. In both bacteria, ${\sigma}^B$ function is primarily important for resistance to diverse stresses. In addition, ${\sigma}^B$ function contributes to the control of important virulence genes in food-borne pathogen L. monocytogenes. Therefore, understanding of the general stress response is important not only for bacterial physiology, but also for pathogenicity.

  • We focused on relationship between phytohormones and AtEXPA3 gene in gravitropic response of A. thaliana. RT-PCR analysis shows that AtEXPA3 was highly expressed in actively developing tissues such as leaf, rosette, root and flower tissues. AtEXPA3 gene expression was enhanced by gravistimulation, BR and IAA. Furthermore, decreased gravitropism was observed when treatment of AVG, an ethylene biosynthetic inhibitor, suggesting that ethylene has a gravistimulating effect itself as well as BRs and IAA. Inhibition of gravitropism in AtEXPA3 RNAi mutant suggests that BR, auxin and ethylene are playing roles as regulators of AtEXPA3. In addition, altered gravitropism in BRs signaling mutant (decreased in bri1-301, bak1, and increased BRI-GFP) indicated that BRs signaling mediated the gravitropism. In conclusion, gravitropic responses of Arabidopsis root resulting from root growth were mediated by increased expression of AtEXPA3 gene, which is stimulated by phytohormones.

  • Biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) have used to as substitutes for petro-diesel by mixed-form with petro-diesel. In several processes of biodiesel production, alkali-catalyst transesterification produced to biodiesel of high contents with short reaction time. In this study, we investigate the optimal condition of alkali-catalyst transesterification of rapeseed oil produced at Jeju island in Korea using response surface methodology. The optimal condition of biodiesel production is reaction temperature 59.7$^{\circ}C$, catalyst amount 1.18%, oil to methanol molar ratio 1:8.75, and reaction time 5.18 min. At that reaction condition, the fatty acid methyl ester contents of product are above 97%. Our results may provide useful information with regard to the development of more economic and efficient biodiesel production system.

  • The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue water solution was carried out by irradiating microwave and UV light simultaneously using $TiO_2$ photocatalyst balls prepared by Chemical Vapor Deposition method. A microwave-discharged electrodeless UV lamp was developed to use microwave and UV simultaneously for photocatalytic reactions. The results of photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue showed that the decomposition rate increased with the microwave intensity, the circulating fluid velocity and auxiliary oxidizing agents added. Especially, the rate constant of $H_2O_2$-added photocatalytic reaction increased about three times from $0.0061min^{-1}$ to $0.0197min^{-1}$ when microwave was additionally irradiated. This study demonstrates that the microwave irradiation can play a very important role in photocatalytic degradation using peroxides although it is not easy to quantitatively assess the effect of microwave on photocatalytic reactions from the experimental data of this study.

  • The present paper was carried out to investigate the inhibition of carcinogenic N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) formation by Maillard reactiion products and nondialyzable melanoidins, obtiane dfrom the glucoseamino acids(Lys, Gly, Arg, His) model systems under different pH conditions(pH 1.2, 4.2 and 6.0). Maillard raction products and nondialyzable melanoidins, produced from the 4 model systems, had a inhibitory action of N-nitrosodimethylamine formation. The inhibitiondegree by the nondialyzable mealanoidins. at pH 1.2 was similar to that at pH 4.2 and that by ascorbic acid at pH 1.2 . Inhibitory action of N-nitrosodimehylamine formation by the reduced Maillard reaction products and nondialyzable melanoidins were lower than that of original samples. Accordingly, it is assumed that the inhibition of N-nitrosodimehtylamine formation of Maillard reaction products is due to their reducing powers.

  • An experimental study on the hydro-cracking of recycling oil obtained from refused plastics was performed for up-grading of its fuel characteristics. Major experimental parameters were reaction temperature ($300^{\circ}C{\sim}700^{\circ}C$) and presence of catalysts (Al-Si, activated carbon, zeolite). The effect of the experimental parameters on the liquid product characteristics such as flash point, kinetic viscosity, and solid content was investigated. The hydro-cracking reactions of the recycling oil at $300^{\circ}C{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ improved the oil characteristics of the liquid products. Activated carbon was revealed as a stable and active catalyst in the hydro-cracking reaction at a temperature range investigated.

  • Titanium silicalite-1 catalyst was prepared using a $SiO_2-TiO_2$ xerogel and applied to allylchloride (ALC) epoxidation by $H_2O_2$ as oxidant in a batch reactor. The reaction temperature was varied from 25 to $55^{\circ}C$, and the concentrations of ALC and $H_2O_2$ were changed from 0.2 to 3 M and from 0.2 to 1.5 M, respectively. The kinetic data obtained were applied to the power rate law, Eley-Rideal, and a Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and power rate law fits the experimental data best. Activation energy was 27.9 kJ/mol, and the reaction orders with respect to $H_2O_2$ and ALC were determined to be 0.41 and 0.52, respectively.

  • We investigated the reduction of pollutants such as TOC (total organic carbon) and decolorization of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) by photocatalytic oxidation. The optimal values of major parameters for the reaction were obtained including the concentration of RB5, the amount of $TiO_2$ dosage and pH of solution. The values were 100 mg/L, 2 g/L and 4.9, respectively. As the concentration of oxygen increased, removal rate of pollutants increased. After $TiO_2$ was regenerated and used again by micro filtration (MF) ceramic membrane, the removal efficiency of color and removal rate of pollutants did not decrease significantly.

  • BNR process is an effective method to remove high strength nitrogen included in wastewater and piggery wastewater. There have been many former studies about the induction of nitritation which have many advantages than full nitrification and the impacting factors on nitritation. Especially, it is reported that organic matter has a relation with nitritation. In this study, laboratory sacle reactor was operated using effluent of anaerobic digester, piggery wastewater and anaerobic digester effluent of piggery wastewater. After analyzing the operating results, the impact of organic matter on nitritation was analyzed by classified COD fractions. It was showed that nitritation is affected by organic matter especially by Ss. In conclusion, organic matter should be managed not just as a single gross parameter but in a classified form.
