Commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes traditionally rely on the computational efficiency of the simplified single-film apparent char kinetic model to predict char particle temperatures and char conversion rates in pulverized coal boilers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability of the single-film apparent kinetic model and to suggest the importance of proper use of this model. For this, a parametric study was conducted with a consideration of main parameters such as Stefan flow, product species, particle evolution, and kinetic parameters.

A nonlinear mathematical model of longitudinal combustion instability appropriate for ramjets and augmenters was developed based on modal analysis. The model was limited to a two-mode formulation. The associated differential equations were solved both analytically and numerically. The two-mode nonlinear model is capable of predicting the bootstrapping effect which characterizes nonlinear velocity-sensitive combustion response. Also, parametric studies were performed.

Safety of reactive systems is one of the most important research areas in the field of weapon development. A NoGo response or at least a low-order explosion should be ensured to prevent unexpected accidents when the reactive system is impacted by high-velocity projectile. We investigated the shock-induced detonation of cased reactive systems subject to a normal projectile impact to the cylindrical surface based on two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations using the I&G chemical rate law. Two types of energetic materials, namely LX-17 and AP-based solid propellant, were considered to compare the dynamic responses of the reactive system when subjected to the threshold impact velocity. It was found that shock-to-detonation transition phenomena occurred in the cased LX-17, whereas no full reaction occurred in the propellant.
The catalytic hydrolysis reactivities of dinuclear nickel (II) complex, ${\mu}-aquapentaaqua[{\mu}-3,6-bis(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine]chlorodinickel\;(II)$ trichloride trihydrate (APNT) for bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) as a DNA model compound were investigated. The dissociation constants of APNT were $pKa_1=7.9$ and $pKa_2=9.6$, respectively. The hydrolysis rate constant of BNPP compound by APNT was showed the rate enhancement of about 370,000 times in the case of none catalyst at pH 7.0 and $50^{\circ}C$. Based on the findings, we proposed the catalytic cycle for the hydrolysis of BNPP by APNT complex. The metal ions of dinuclear nickel (II) complex significantly enhance the transfer rate of phosphoryl group in the catalytic process and the water molecules as nucleophile and proton transfer agent act in different steps.
Metal hydrides, $LaNi_5$ and $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$, were prepared using chemical synthetic method, and their physical properties were examined using various analytic techniques such as TGA, XRD, SEM and EDX. The activation of the chemically prepared $LaNi_5$ and $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ was achieved by two hydriding/dehydriding cycles only. The miasurements of P-C-T curves revealed that 6 and 5.5 hydrogen atoms were stored in LaNi5and $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$, respectively. The hydriding reaction rated for $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ were measured by the method of initial rates. It was found that the shrinking unreacted core model could be applied for the analysis of hydriding kinetics of $LaNi_5$. The rate controlling step of this reaction was the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen molecules on the surface of $LaNi_5$. The activation energy was $9.506kcal/mol-H_2$. The rates measured in the temperature range from 273 to 343K and in pressure difference ($P_o-P_{eq}$) range form 0.25 to 0.66atm could be expressed as the following equation ; $\frac{dX}{dt}=4.636(P_o-P_{eq})$ exp($\frac{-9506}{RT}$).

Numerical models of directional wave spectra for the analysis of offshore structural cable responses are verified. Alternative spreading models are used to predict wave-induced flows in water and for mooring systems. Hydrodynamic wave forces upon cable are estimated. using a Morison formula encompassing considerations for drag and for inertial forces both parallel and tangential to the slope of the cable. Numerical analysis for directional random waves. including consideration of displacement and velocity, trajectory, phase plane response. and tension are shown for mooring system cable responses at both the tether point for a buoy and at the anchor point. The effects of wave forces far different drag coefficients, various significant wave heights, and selected wave parameters are considered in the analysis. For the specific systems considered in the examples, it is demonstrated that wave period and height as well as wave spreading function parameters and drag coefficients, have an important effect upon the dynamic responses of the cable-buoy systems.

Flow difference between reacting and non-reacting case in a swirl stabilized annular combustor is investigated using 3D Large Eddy Simulation with flamelet turbulent combustion model. The combustor of concern is the LM6000, lean premixed dry low-NOx annular combustor, developed by GEAE. Boundary conditions are based on experimental data. Heat release as a result of combustion put the dilatation of density in primary combustion zone highly increased so that the main swirl stream behind of a swirl cup stretched further downstream than that of non-reacting case. The oval shape of core flow in cross-section to flow direction, which clearly observed in non-reacting case, tends to be circle, and small vorticities in wide range in non-reacting case disappears, but the size of iso-vorticity increase in reacting case.
This paper describes the batch test results for application of CFW(Carbonized Foods Waste), which was produced by the process of recycling waste, in PRB system. It analyzed characteristics for individual adsorption and competitive adsorption of Cu and Zn in heavy metals. In individual adsorption, the Langmuir and Freundlich models are used to predict adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption equilibrium corresponded to the Langmuir's and the maximum adsorption amount of Cu was greater than Zn's. The removal of heavy metal is predicted that Zn was faster than Cu. The reaction rate of Zn based on Pseudo-first-order and Pseudo-second-order was faster than Cu's, and the result of competitive adsorption test confirmed that the adsorption amount of Zn is reduced under similar condition for competitive adsorption rate of Cu and Zn. When Zn solution is mixed in Cu, Cu is adsorbed 86% on CFW. However, the adsorption of Zn is 19% on the contrary condition. Therefore, the removal characteristics of separate heavy metal should be considered for efficient treatment of contaminated ground based on complex heavy metal.
Time-lapse crosswell seismic data, recorded before and after the cavity filling, showed that the filling increased the velocity at a known cavity zone in an old mine site in Inchon area. The seismic response depicted on the tomogram and in conjunction with the geologic data from drillings imply that the size of the cavity may be either small or filled by debris. In this study, I attempted to evaluate the filling effect by analyzing velocity measured from the time-lapse tomograms. The data acquired by a downhole airgun and 24-channel hydrophone system revealed that there exists measurable amounts of source statics. I presented a methodology to estimate the source statics. The procedure for this method is: 1) examine the source firing-time for each source, and remove the effect of irregular firing time, and 2) estimate the residual statics caused by inaccurate source positioning. This proposed multi-step inversion may reduce high frequency numerical noise and enhance the resolution at the zone of interest. The multi-step inversion with different starting models successfully shows the subtle velocity changes at the small cavity zone. The inversion procedure is: 1) conduct an inversion using regular sized cells, and generate an image of gross velocity structure by applying a 2-D median filter on the resulting tomogram, and 2) construct the starting velocity model by modifying the final velocity model from the first phase. The model was modified so that the zone of interest consists of small-sized grids. The final velocity model developed from the baseline survey was as a starting velocity model on the monitor inversion. Since we expected a velocity change only in the cavity zone, in the monitor inversion, we can significantly reduce the number of model parameters by fixing the model out-side the cavity zone equal to the baseline model.
Microalgae have been suggested as a promising feedstock for producing biofuel because of their potential of lipid production. In this study, a first principles ODE model for microalgae growth and neutral lipid synthesis proposed by Surisetty et al. (2010) is investigated for the purpose of maximizing the rate of microalgae growth and the amount of neutral lipid. The model has 6 states and 12 parameters and follows the assumption of Droop model which explains the growth as a two-step phenomenon; the uptake of nutrients is first occurred in the cell, and then use of intra-cellular nutrient to support cells growth. In this study, optimal input design using D-optimality criterion is performed to compute the system input profile and sensitivity analysis is also performed to determine which parameters have a negligible effect on the model predictions. Furthermore, model predictive control based on successive linearization is implemented to maximize the amount of neutral lipid contents.
