Behavioral Recovery of Sows and Behavioral Development of TheirPiglets Postpartum (분만 후 모돈의 행동적 회복과 포유자돈의 행동적 발달)

  • We investigated postpartum behaviors of sows and their litters. The aim of this study was to determine the behavioral recovery of sows and the behavioral development of their piglets postpartum. Five multiparous sows(Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) and their litters were studied over a period of 5 days postpartum. The litter size varied from 8 to 13 with a mean of 11.2 piglets. The behaviors of sows and their piglets were recorded using five CCD cameras, a multiplexer and a time lapsed VCR. The videotapes were scanned every 2 min to obtain an instantaneous behavioral sample. In the behaviors of sows, ‘Lying ventrally’ increased from 1 h postpartum to 26 h postpartum, then decreased gradually, and stabilized after 80 h postpartum. ‘Lying laterally’ decreased from 1 h postpartum to 26 h postpartum and stabilized after 80 h postpartum. ‘Standing, drinking and feeding’ increased from 1 h postpartum to 23 h postpartum, then decreased gradually, and increased again from 60 h postpartum. ‘Sitting’ increased from 1 h postpartum to 46 h postpartum and then decreased. In the behaviors of piglets, ‘Lying’ increased rapidly from 1h postpartum to 45h postpartum, and then was maintained at an almost constant level. ‘Massaging and Suckling’ decreased rapidly from 1 h postpartum to 36 h postpartum, and then was maintained at an almost constant level. ‘Walking’ increased from 1 h postpartum to 21 h postpartum, then decreased gradually. These results suggest that the behavioral recovery of the sow is almost completed at 80h postpartum and that the behavioral development of the piglet is almost completed at 45h postpartum.

A study on the school health education curriculum development focused on the health education course in primary school (국민학교 보건교육 교과과정의 개선방안에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was development of school health education curriculum in primary school based on analysis of the textbooks published in 1991. 1) The health education curriculum in primary school consisted of four major components such as health education aspects of the healthful school environments, health education aspects of school health services, health education course, and health instruction in related subjects. However, health instruction taught by physical education, biology, and other health related subjects was not systematic organization for health care. 2) A considerable amount of health knowledge and attitude, and some health practices was learned as the result of experiences in other courses, where there was little or no reference to health. It must be developed health edcation course separated from health related subjects. 3) Direct health insruction was represented by the health education course. The health education courses must be considered to be heart of the school health education curriculum. 4) The health education course developed by this study was consisted of eight health units and problems in the early elementary grade or health classes in the higher years. 5) The health education course developed by this study provided the opportunity for acquring new knowledge, attitude, and practice, for discarding the unhealtful attitude and strengthening the healthful attitude and practices of primary school students.

The Effect of Oral Health Behavior by Oral Health Belief of Student in Dental Hygiene Department of College Students in Seoul (서울지역 일부대학 치위생과 학생의 구강건강신념이 구강보건행태에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of oral health behavior by oral health belief from the students in the dental hygienics department who take charge of oral health office, and therefore to lead a clear oral health care, to complete desirable oral health belief, and finally to utilize them for oral health field. The survey was conducted using structured self-administered questionnaires based on oral health belief model targeting 163 students in the dental hygienics department of one of the college in Seoul, and collected data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program. As a result of analysis to determine that the oral health belief significantly affects on the oral heal behavior, the personal variables such as age, economic status and occupation, and the seriousness for the oral health belief were indicated to be significant variables(p<0.05), and as a result of analysis that effects on the number of the oral health behavior, the susceptibility and the seriousness were indicated to be significant variables for oral health belief(P<0.05). As a conclusion, oral health belief was identified as a factor of salience through understanding that oral health belief of the students in the dental hygienics department effects on oral health behavior based on an oral health belief model, and it can be concluded that the necessity of oral health belief investigation should be discussed as a crucial issue to provide a more effective oral health promotion plan.

The etiology of neonatal bacterial meningitis in Busan, Korea (부산 지역 신생아에서 발생한 세균성 수막염의 원인균에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : Neonatal bacterial meningitis has been known that its mortality and morbidity is high and its neurologic complications are common. This study was performed to review of the etiology of neonatal bacterial meningitis in Busan, Korea. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed 21 medical records of patients who were diagnosed neonatal bacterial meningitis in four university hospitals in Busan from January 1997 to December 2005. We analyzed age at onset of symptoms, symptoms at admission, causative organisms, and complications. Results : There were 11 male patients and 10 female patients. One premature neonate was included. 7 patients had symptoms at 2-3 weeks after birth and 6 patients at 1-2 weeks after birth. 18 cases had fever, 8 cases had seizure and some had poor feeding, lethargy and irritability. The most common organism causing neonatal bacterial meningitis was Group B streptococcus (GBS). 11 cases were due to GBS, 3 cases due to E. coli, 3 cases were due to Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 2 cases due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. one Listeria monocytogenes and one Enterobacter cloacae were included. 18 patients were alive and 3 patients died. Mental retardation, developmental delay and epilepsy occurred in a living patient. Conclusions : Although this was a retrospective study, we found that Group B streptococcus (GBS) was the most common organism causing neonatal bacterial meningitis and this data is nearly same as others in the world.

Analysis of Experiments for the Rules of Material Change Unit in 9th Grade Science Textbooks and the Development of Experiments Applying Small-Scale Chemistry (9학년 과학교과서 물질변화에서의 규칙성 단원 실험 분석과 Small-Scale Chemistry를 적용한 실험 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze experiments for the rules of material change unit in 9th grade science textbooks and develop experiments applying small-scale chemistry (SSC). For this study, experimental methods for the precipitation experiment, water electrolysis experiment, decomposition of hydrogen peroxide experiment presented in the 9 science textbooks were analyzed. Problems and improvements that were needed were extracted by 13 science teachers performing the experiments. Experiments applying SSC were developed based on the improvements needed. Afterwards, 19 pre-service science teachers performed both the developed SSC experiments and the science textbooks' experiments. A questionnaire about merits and demerits of the experiments applying SSC was performed. According to the results of this study, most of the 9th grade science textbooks included the lead iodide precipitation experiment, water electrolysis experiment by Hoffman voltameter, and decomposition of hydrogen peroxide experiment using catalytic manganese dioxide. Improvements were needed on the quantity of reagents, time for performing experiments, and scale of experimental apparatus. Merits of the developed experiments applying SSC which used small amount of reagents were safety, easy waste material disposal, short reaction time, and reproducible experimental results. Demerits of the experiments applying SSC were difficulty in observing, decreased achievement, and lack of skill in handling small-scale apparatus. Therefore, if the experiments developed applying SSC were to be utilized in 9th grade science experiments, it will be possible to use less reagent and be able to teach and carry out reproducible experiments at the same time. Also, the reproducible experiments based on SSC will help students under stand the scientific concepts for the rules of material change unit.

A Study on the Investigation into Dental Hygienists' Awareness of Health Impairment Factors by Occupational Diseases (치과위생사의 직업병에 의한 건강장애요인 인식도 조사)

  • As a basic research material to make more efficient healthcare and health promotion for dental hygienists, this study intends to determine which factors may affect their awareness of occupational diseases. For this sake, this study attempted to investigate into a variety of literatures and data, and applied a questionnaire survey to 160 dental hygienists for about 5 months(from June to October 2003), who were all employed in domestic dental clinics or offices. As a result of analysis, this study can be concluded as follows: (1) The result of analyzing how dental hygienists recognized their occupational diseases showed that 'stiffness in muscle, neck or shoulder due to intensive use of specific physical regions' and 'stress resulting from the attributes of each task' reached the highest awareness(90.6%) of all, which was followed by 'lower eyesight due to detailed or even sophisticated tasks for many hours(65%)' and 'symptoms of ruptured disk due to standing tasks as dental hygienists do for many hours(62.5%).' (2) The result of analyzing how dental hygienists recognize their occupational diseases showed that their awareness averaged 7.28 points out of 14 points, which implies that their awareness of occupational diseases is not very high. Meanwhile, the result of examining how they recognize detrimental or harmful properties of given materials against human body showed that a majority of total respondents(74.4%) regarded given materials as detrimental to human body. (3) The result of examining how dental hygienists recognize their occupational diseases showed that a majority of total respondents(91.9%) identified their own occupational diseases. Many of total respondents(41.9%) pointed out that environmental improvement around workshop in each clinic or office should be foremost prerequisite to health and welfare for dental hygienists. Next, 34.4% of total respondents pointed out the necessity to perform in-house health diagnosis and examination on a regular basis, and 13.1% of total respondents thought it necessary to carry on healthcare education into harmful properties in the aspect of dental materiology, respectively.

Dental Caries Risk Can Be Predicted by Simply Measuring the pH and Buffering Capacity of Saliva (치아우식과 연관된 타액의 pH와 완충력)

  • This study examined the relationship between the quantity of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus spp. related to dental caries and the degree of acidity in saliva. A total of 240 saliva samples were taken from 80 subjects at the faculty of dentistry in Skopje, Macedonia. The saliva samples were taken by stimulating saliva production stimulation with paraffin chewing. However, no stimulation was applied when obtaining the samples used for measuring the pH. The data showed that in the caries group, S. mutans in 1 ml of saliva formed colonies with confluent growth (CFU > $10^6$ and $10^4-10^5$) in 100% of samples, whereas the Lactobacillus spp. formed colonies with confluent growth in 78.3%. In contrast, no colonies with confluent growth (CFU > $10^6$ and $10^5$) were found in the control group (with healthy intact teeth). In the caries group, the pH of the saliva was slightly acidic (pH = 5.90 - 6.50) and the buffering capacity was very low (below 0.7 ml of saliva per min). On the other hand, the pH of the saliva in the control group was neutral (pH 7.01 - 7.7) and the buffering capacity was high (over 1 ml of saliva per min). The increased number of S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp. in 1 ml of saliva (above $10^5$ CFU or more) from the CRT (Caries Risk Test, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) bacteria test can indicate an increased caries risk as well as slightly higher acidity of the saliva. Overall, these results reveal that the caries risk can be predicted by simply measuring the pH and buffering capacity of saliva, and can be used to monitor the effect of dental hygiene practices with the aim of preventing dental caries.

A Study on Stressors among Dental Hygiene Students (치위생과 학생들의 스트레스 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the sociopsychological stress of dental hygiene students, any possible gaps among them according to their general characteristics and the most influential factor for their stress. The subjects in this study were the dental hygiene students who were selected by convenience sampling from three different colleges. After a survey was conducted for about a month between March and April, 2011, the answer sheets from 561 students were analyzed. As for the sociopsychological stress of the dental hygiene students, economic stress was the heaviest sociopsychological stress that the students suffered(3.17). Regarding differences in each stressor according to general characteristics, they were more stressed out about their economy, families, interpersonal relationships and studies when they had a less conversation with their families. And they had more stress about their economy, families, interpersonal relationships and studies when they found themselves to be more unhealthy. The gaps between them and the others were statistically significant. As a result of analyzing the influential factors for their stress, they had more stress when they had a less conversation with their families(p<0.001) and when they found themselves not to be in good health(p<0.001). It's required to seek ways for dental hygiene students to cope with their stress properly, and the development of stress management programs is necessary. Besides, education and training should be provided for them to regulate their own stress successfully.

A Study on Correlation between Dietary Intake Status and Dental Caries in the Dept. of Dental Hygiene (일부 치위생과 학생의 식이섭취실태와 치아우식증과의 상관관계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to utilize it as useful basic data for improving oral health and for developing educational guidelines, by surveying the intake frequency in cariogenic food and the dietary intake status in detergent food through dietary life diary of some female undergraduates, and by researching into relationship between dietary intake factor and dental caries. It allowed dietary life diary for 5 days to be recorded targeting female undergraduates for the Dept. of Dental Hygiene, selected dietary life diary of 66 people without omission of record, and used it in this study. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. As a result of surveying the food intake status, it was indicated to be 12.82 for cariogenic food intake frequency, 256.36 for caries incidence available time and 8.32 for detergent food intake frequency. 2. As a result of surveying in order to examine relationship between cariogenic food intake frequency, detergent food intake frequency & cariogenic light-meal intake frequency and dental caries by dividing group with caries and group with non-caries, the group with caries was indicated to be a little higher than the group with non-caries. However, statistically significant difference wasn't indicated. 3. In the correlation between dietary intake status and dental caries, it was indicated that the more rise in cariogenic food intake frequency leads to the more rise in detergent food intake frequency and even in total light-meal intake frequency, but wasn't shown correlation with dental caries. In light of the above results, many limitations were indicated in finding and analyzing the dental caries incidence level and cause just with a method through surveying dietary intake. However, given the more in cariogenic food intake frequency and detergent food intake frequency, the possibility of dental caries incidence could be predicted.

A Study on Subjective Symptoms of a Oral Malodor in Korean Adults (한국 성인의 주관적 구취 자각증상에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of the subjective oral malodor perception of the survey subjects. Through the subjective questionnaire method over about 3 months from June to August in 2007, the data was collected targeting 275 adults. Statistical methods used were Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and One-way ANOVA. And, the following results were obtained. 1. When having seen the ratio of those who were conscious of oral malodor, the adults, who responded with saying of feeling oral malodor at present and at ordinary times, accounted for 68.4% and 79.3%, respectively. And, the adults, who responded with saying of not feeling, were indicated to be 31.6%(at present) and 20.7%(at ordinary times), respectively. 2. Almost 83.5% of total people answered that they had most severe oral malodor at the time of awakening and 51.9% of subjects answered tongue contributed to the their oral malodor. 3. About the type of oral malodor, although 37.2% of the group thought the type of oral malodor was a food smell and fetid smell was second general burning smell occurred the time of hunger(22.5%). 4. In the answers of hoping for treatment of oral malodor, 66.9% of the people showed positive response to dental treatment for controlling their oral malodor. Especially 7.3% of subjects showed very big desire for treatment. 5. In the level of oral malodor that is felt now according to the time of a meal, the case of within 1 hour after having a meal was responded to be not felt the oral malodor with 44.7%. And, there was response with saying of not feeling oral malodor in 37.6% as for 1-2 hours, 16.3% as for 2-3 hours, 14.8% as for 3-4 hours, and 23.7% as for more than 4 hours. Thus, the level of oral malodor according to the time of a meal showed the statistically significant difference(p<0.01). Through the results of this study, it could be known about whether or not being conscious of oral malodor in general people, the main cause and region for oral malodor, the importance and practicing method of tongue brush through literature. Accordingly, there is necessity of further researching and comparing whether or not being conscious of oral malodor by diversely surveying relevancy with factors of causing oral malodor based on the objective oral malodor measurement value. The future diverse researches are thought to be necessarily performed in order to prevent or reduce oral malodor.
