Cobalt aluminate ($CoAl_2O_4$) is a highly stable pigment with excellent resistance to light, weather, etc., which has resulted in widespread use as a ceramic pigment. Due to the unique optical characteristics, $CoAl_2O_4$ is generally used as a coloring agent to decorate porcelain products, glass, paints and plastics. Here, $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments were synthesized by polymerized complex method and solid state reaction. Then $CoAl_2O_4$ pigment were grinded using the attrition milling with 1 mm size zirconia ball for 3 hours. The attrition milling process was performed at the constant speed of 800 rpm and ball to powder weight ratio (BPR) was 100 : 1. The characteristics of synthesized pigment were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analyser (PSA) and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$. The XRD patterns of $CoAl_2O_4$ show single phase spinel structure. The particle size of $CoAl_2O_4$ measured by FE-SEM, TEM and PSA analysis was in the range of 100~200 nm. The blue color of obtained $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments could be confirmed through CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ measurement.

Conductivity of LSGMC materials were affected by secondary phase segregation, composition and synthetic route. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.1}Co_{0.1}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSGMC) powders were prepared using the glycine nitrate process to produce high surface area and compositionally homogeneous powders. The powders were synthesized with different 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 of glycine/cation molar ratios. A single perovskite phase from the synthesized powders was characterized with X-ray diffraction patterns. The obtained sintered pellets showed the dense grain microstructure. In case of 1.5 molar ratio, its density was higher than the others. The electrical conductivity measured at $800^{\circ}C$ was observed to be 0.131 $Scm^{-1}$. In addition, the linear thermal expansion behavior was indicated between $25^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$.
Laves phases of $NdFe_2$, $Nd{(Fe_{0.5})}_2$, $SmCo_2$ and $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ stoichiometry were prepared using a rapid solidification technology. Low temperature magnetic properties show ferromagnetic behaviors for the $Nd{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$, $SmCo_2$ and $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$Nd(Feo,Coo,) Laves compounds while a sort of spin reorientation has been suggested for the supposed composition of $NdFe_2$ alloy. This rapidly solidified $NdFe_2$ alloy is believed to consist of metastable rhombohedral $NdFe_7$ phase plus fine particles of Nd-rich phase. Some evidence of phase transition from the mixture of unstable $NdFe_7$ compound plus Nd-rich to $Nd_2Fe_{17}$ plus Fe-Nd-O phase was obtained after annealing the $NdFe_2$, alloy. The pseudo-binary Laves compound, $Sm{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ exhibits a high coercivityof 4 kOe at room temperature with Curie temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ while the $Nd{(Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5})}_2$ compound shows a magnetic moment of $2.8\;{\mu}_B/f.u.$.
In this research, it was examined chloride ion penetration resistance of slag-replaced concrete and cementless slag concrete considering marine environmental exposure conditions of splash zone, tidal zone and immersion zone. In the design strength of grade 24 MPa, the specimens were tested to determine their compressive strength, scanning electron microscopy images and chloride migration coefficient. Further, chloride ion penetration depth and carbonation depth of specimens exposed to marine environment were measured. Experimental results confirm that chloride migration coefficient of specimens tended to decrease with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in accelerated laboratory test. In addition, the specimens exposed to the tidal zone were found to be the greatest chloride ion penetration depth compared to splash zone and immersion zone. On the other hand, the chloride ion penetration depth of the specimens exposed to splash zone tended to increase with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in contrast with the results for the tidal zone and immersion zone.
[ $Zn_{1-x}Co_{x}O$ (x=0-0.3) films were grown on Corning 7059 glasses by asymmetrical bipolar pulsed dc magnetron sputtering. The c-axis orientation along (002) plane was enhanced with increasing Co concentration. The $Zn_{1-x}Co_{x}O$ films are grown with fibrous grains of tight dome shape. The transmittance spectra measured from UV-visible showed that sp-d exchange interactions and typical d-d transitions become activated with increasing Co concentration. The electrical resistivity of $Zn_{1-x}Co_{x}O$ films increased with increasing Co concentration, especially it increased greatly at $30at\% Co. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and alternating gradient magnetometer analyses indicated that no Co metal cluster is formed and the ferromagnetic properties are exhibited. The low electrical resistivity and room temperature ferromagnetism of $Zn_{1-x}Co_{x}O$ thin films suggested the possibility of the application to Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMSs).
Biocompatibility and tissue regenerating capacity are essential characteristics in the design of collagenous biomaterials for tissue engineering. Attachment of glycosaminoglycans to collagen may add to these characteristics by creating an appropriate micro-environment. In this study, porous type I collagen matrices were crosslinked using dehydrothermal treatment and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide, in the presence and absence of chondroitin sulfate (CS). The scaffold like discs in 3 mm diameter were inserted into the intralamellar stromal pockets of rabbit cornea. In 8 weeks of follow up, clinical evaluation including corneal neovascularization, opacity and transparency of the graft scaffold was performed, and the inflammatory reaction and migration of corneal fibroblast were evaluated histologically. No inflammation, neovascularization and opacity in any of the implant were observed. CS increased the corneal fibroblast invasion and the transparency. It is concluded that the type I collagen sponge showed a biocompatibility in corneal stromal layer and addition of CS slightly improved the quality of the bioartificial corneal stromal layer. These results could be useful for the development of corneal substitutes.
The internal short-circuit between cathodes and anodes has been known to be a critical concern for the safety failures of lithium-ion batteries, which is strongly influenced by the thermal stability of separators. In this study, to effectively suppress the internal short-circuit failures, we developed a new composite separator with the improved thermal stability compared to conventional polyolefin-based separators. The composite separators were prepared by introducing a ceramic coating layer ($Al_2O_3$/PVdF-HFP) onto both sides of a polyethylene (PE) separator. The microporous structure of ceramic coating layers is determined by controlling the phase inversion of coating solutions and becomes more developed with the increase of nonsolvent (water) content. This structural change of ceramic coating layers was observed to greatly affect the thermal stability as well as the electrochemical performance of composite separators, which was systematically discussed in terms of phase inversion.
Sintering property, mechanical property and bioactivity of $CaO-SiO_2-B_2O_3$ glass-ceramics were investigated. This glass-ceramics was sintered at 750-830${\circ}$ and showed nearly pore-free microstructure. The glass-ceramics consisted of three phases, i.e. monclinic-wollastonite, calcium borate and borosilicate glass matrix. The mechanical strength was higher than that of other bioactive ceramics, especially compressive strength(2813 MPa) and fracture toughness($3.12 MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). Bioactivity of the glass-ceramics depends on amount of $CaB_2O_4$ and borosilicate glass matrix. It might be likely that more soluble $CaB_2O_4$ raises supersaturation of Ca ion in SBF solution and borosilicate glass forms Si-OH group that presents nucleation site of hydroxycarbonate apatite(HCA) layer. So, glassceramics of more $CaB_2O_4$ and borosilicate glass showed better bioactivity.
Fabrication of high strength structural concrete was investigated by using a mechanochemically Surface Treated Fly Ash(MSTFA) induced by mechanochemical processing through ball-milling of (90 wt% As Recevied Fly Ash(ARFA) + 10wt% cement) mixture, which was compared to the specimen fabricated by using As Received Fly Ash(ARFA) in terms with compressive strength and microstructures. The compressive strength of concrete specimen fabricated by using MSTFA represented 10-20% and 2-7% higher value than that for the case of using ARFA and BPFA in each cases. Increased compressive strength as above mentioned is considered to be caused by mutually increased affinity generated between cement and fly ash during mechanochemical processing.
Rapid densification of a SiC-30 wt% TiC powder with additive 10 wt% A1$_2$O$_3$-Y$_2$O$_3$-CaO was conducted by Spark Plasma Sintering(SPS). The fully-densified materials can be obtain through the SPS process with very fast heating rate and short holding time. In the present work, the heating rate and applied pressure were kept to be $100^{\circ}C$/min and 40 MPa, while sintering temperature varied from $1600^{\circ}C$ to $1800^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The full densification of SiC-30 wt% TiC composites with the addition of $Al_2$O$_3$, $Y_2$O$_3$ and CaO was achieved at the temperature above $1700^{\circ}C$ by spark plasma sintering. The XRD found that 3C-SiC and TiC were maintained the entire SPS process temperature, without phase transformation of SiC and formation of YAG phase to $1800^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the rapidly densified SiC-30 wt% TiC composites consisted of smaller equiaxed SiC grains and larger TiC grains. The biaxial strength of 635.2 MPa and fracture toughness of 6.12 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$ were found for the specimen prepared at $1750^{\circ}C$.
