  • The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the beam-columns and the columns was investigated in this paper. The energy method was deployed to study the inelastic buckling behavior of the beam-columns and columns. which requires the iterative solution of a fourth-order eigenproblem. Hitherto, the patterns of residual stress that satisfies the I-section manufacturing in Korea is not available, therefore the pattern of residual stress used in this study is a 'well-known' simplified pattern. The simplified pattern of the residual stresses is incorporated with the flow theory of plasticity to model the inelastic response. Firstly, this study investigates the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the I-section beam-columns under a concentric axial compressive force and uniform bending, and the effect of residual stress on the inelastic buckling behavior of beam-columns is studied. The study is then extended to the inelastic buckling of the columns by eliminating a bending moment. These results are compared it with the design method in the Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study has found that design method in KSDM (1995) is excessively conservative.

  • This paper is to evaluate the load carrying capacities of cold-formed steel columns subject to combined axial load and bending moment. A combined strength experiment is carried out using full-scale 24 specimens of lipped channel section with embossment in web. An eccentric axial load is applied in varying member-length and eccentric distance which produces an end-moment of the column. The predictions of the AISI specification and the Eurocode are compared with the experimental results, and it is shown that all of these codes are reasonable on the whole in relation to the experimental results.

  • The performance-based design is highlighted as an alternative for the current design method, which cannot definitely specify the performance level that a building requires. Research on it is already in progress, however, in developed countries like the United States and Japan, to establish the basis for a performance-based design. Many studies on such design are also being conducted in South Korea, but South Korea still lags behind other countries in all-around technology. On the other hand, the column members, especially the lower external column, are affected by the variation of the axial force by overturning the moments in the case of lateral loads by earthquake. Varying the axial force can affect the time of local buckling and the ultimate behavior. Thus, in this study, the structural performance, such as the time of local buckling and the ultimate behavior, was analyzed through an experimental study on column members under varying axial force. The feasibility of a domestic study proposing a performance level with a story drift angle formed about a structural-performance-based steel structure design was also verified.

  • In relation to concentrically loaded compression, this research is to describe, analyze, and evaluate the design strength in steel stud. The similarity and difference among load and resistance factor design specification for cold-formed steel structural members (AISI), cold-formed thin gauge members and sheeting (EC3 part 1.3), and German draft (DASt-Richtlinie 016) are introduced, discussed, and systematically evaluated. Especially, the effective width and global instability problems (flexural buckling and torsional flexural buckling) are here implied in this research. The design axial strength by dual standards (AISI and EC3) is calculated and compared using the example.

  • This paper describes the experimental study on the mechanical characteristics of a steel plate-reinforced concrete joint. As an alternative reinforced concrete structure, the SC modular construction method is widely used and studied in the field ofindustrial facility field. However, the structure characteristics of RC and SC joint are not yet studied completely. In this paper, the beam-type construction joint of RC and SC walls was made to simulate the application of SC module to the large RC structure. Also, an out-of-plane loading was applied to the test specimen in order to evaluate flexural strength and structural properties of the beam-type RC-SC joint.

  • Recently, due to the increasing overloaded heavy vehicles and traffic volumes fatigue failures of steel highway bridges frequently occur. Therefore, it is important to decide rational fatigue design procedure which can reflect lifetime cumulative fatigue damage reasonably. In this study, cumulative fatigue damages are simulated for various bridge systems and traffic conditions. The AASHTO LRFD fatigue design procedure is reviewed and the current fatigue design loading format, in which a single representative truck is loaded regardless of bridge width, is found to yield inconsistent safety level. Improved loading format with rational design load level for fatigue design is suggested.

  • The construction of highway bridges is almost complete in many countries including the United States. The government and highway agencies change the focus from constructing to maintaining To maintain the bridges effectively there is an urgent need to assess actual bridge loading carrying capacity and to predict their remaining life. The system reliability techniques have to be used for this purpose. Based on lifetime distribution (function) techniques this study illustrates how typical highway bridges can be modeled to predict their remaining life. The parameters of lifetime distribution are generated by Monte. The results can be used for optimization of planning interventions on existing bridges.

  • The back-to-back and box-shaped headers used in light gauge steel structures have some disadvantages, i.e., construction efficiency and cost competitiveness. As such, cold-formed steel L-shaped headers have been developed and are used actively in advanced nations. However, this system has not been used in Korea because of inadequate investigation and adaptation efforts and lack of application example. Thus, this research evaluated the structural performance of L-header using buckling analyses and bending tests. Test results were compared using the AISI design criteria. Test results showed that local buckling and distortional buckling governed buckling behavior in gravity loads and uplift loads, respectively. These results were consistent with the calculated nomial strengths using the AISI design criteria.

  • When steel fabricators erect structural members in field, temporary tightening of fastener should be useful. However, if bolt holes are not aligned by production error or natural condition, additional effort andpain should be provided to align bolt holes. It lead to longer period than times of construction (a primarily day of construction) and more cost than originally cost. This problem will be overcomed by oversize or slotted holes. Early, AISC and Eurocode have included provision for design process such oversize or slotted holes. But, domestic design method is not refered about oversize and slotted holes. Meanwhile, domestic design method and construction environment are variance with Europe and the United States of America. Therefore, a suitable design method for oversize and slotted holes in domestic real condition is needed. In this study, we evaluated behavior of the joints and decided the friction coefficient on oversize and slotted holes of friction joints with high strength bolts.

  • In the steel structure of high-rise buildings, a connection analysisand a column design have been made after welding and bolting suitable gaps. Each country, however, has different codes, and such differences are very big. American steel has been designed according to a code that all axial loads can be carried from the upper parts to the lower parts as determined by the designer, but Korean and Japanese steel have been designed by 1/4 of the standard of all axial loads. In this paper, a metal touch experiment was done as an intermediation parameter with a connecting location and a connecting method for economic and constructive efficiency. Every specimen is tested by a low-to-high displacement control to grasp ultimate strength, displacement, the connection's lateral deflection, and stress. The results of the test were compared and analyzed.
