  • In this paper, the effect of shear rate on internal friction angle and unconfined compressive strength of non-cemented and cemented sand was investigated. A dry Jumunjin sand was prepared at loose, medium, and dense conditions with a relative density of 40, 60 and 80%. Then, series of direct shear tests were conducted at shear rates of 0.32, 0.64, and 2.54 mm/min. In addition, a cemented sand with cement ratio of 8% and 12% was compacted into a cylindrical specimen with 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. Unconfined compression tests on the cemented sand were performed with various shear rates such as 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10%/min. Regardless of a degree of cementation, the unconfined compressive strength of the cemented sand and the angle of internal friction of the non-cemented sand tended to increase as the shear rate increased. For the non-cemented sand, the angle of internal friction increased by 4° at maximum as the shear rate increased. The unconfined compressive strength of the cemented sand also increased as the shear rate increased. However, its increasing pattern declined after the standard shear rate (1 mm/min). A discrete element method was also used to analyze the crack initiation and its development for the cemented sand with shear rate. Numerical results of unconfined compressive strength and failure pattern were similar to the experimental results.

  • The estimation of surface settlement, ground behavior and tunnel displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel design with shallow depth and unconsolidated soil. On deformation analysis of shallow tunnel, it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigated the effects of key design parameter affecting deformation behavior by numerical analysis using nonlinear model incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters with the increment of the maximum shear strain after the initiation of plastic yielding. Numerical parametric studies are carried out to consider the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters, horizontal stress ratio, cohesion and shotcrete thickness.

  • The factors affecting the geotechnical properties of cemented sands are known to be relative density, cementation level, stress level, and particle characteristics such as particle size, shape and surface conditions. It has been widely accepted that the friction angle of cemented sands is not affected by cementation while the cohesion of cemented sands was significantly influenced by cementation. The cementation that is a critical component of the strength of cemented sands will be broken with increasing confining pressure and great caution is required in evaluating the cohesion of cemented specimens due to their fragilities. In this study, a series of drained shear tests were performed with specimens at various cementation levels and confining stresses to evaluate the strength parameters of cemented sands. From the experiments, it was concluded that the cohesion intercept of cemented sand experiences three distinctive zone(cementation control zone, transition zone, and stress control zone), as the cementation level and the confining stress varies. In addition, for accurate evaluation of the strength parameters, the level of confining stress triggering the breakage of cementation bond should be determined. In this study, the relationship between the maximum confining stresses capable of maintaining the cementation bond intact and unconfined compression strength of the cemented sand was established.

  • In this study, the relations of cone tip resistances (qc) and DMT indices of cemented sand are analyzed from a series of calibration chamber tests. The experimental results show that, with increasing the cementation level, three DMT indices also increase. The CPT and DMT do not appear to properly reflect the cementation effect of sand, since the penetration induces the damage of cementation. Nevertheless, the DMT is more sensitive to deformation characteristics of cemented sand than CPT. It is also observed that the $E_D/q_c$ ratio of cemented sand is larger than that of uncemented sand. However, the $K_D-q_c/{\sigma}_v'$ relation is independant of cementation, unlike the result of previous study. In addition, this study evaluates the constrained modulus and cohesion intercept of cemented sand using the relation between cone resistance and dilatometer constrained modulus ($M_D$).

  • In this study, the cone tip resistances of cemented sand are measured by performing a series of miniature cone penetration tests in large calibration chamber, and the relations with constrained modulus, unconfined compressive strength, and shear strength of cemented sand are suggested. Experimental results show that both the cone tip resistance and constrained modulus of sand increase with increasing cementation effect as well as relative density and confining stress. However, it is observed that the relative density and confining stress have more significant influence on cone tip resistance than constrained modulus of cemented sand. Since the cone penetration into the ground induces the damage of cementation, the cone tip resistance can't properly reflect the cementation effect of sand. An analysis based on the constrained modulus shows that the measured cone tip resistance underestimates the deformation modulus of cemented sand by about $70{\sim}85%$. In addition, this study establishes various relationships among the above soil properties from the regression analysis.

  • In this study, the EMI (electro-mechanical impedance) of a small piezoelectric sensor was applied for measuring a unit weight and cementation (strength) of sand. Three different sizes of uncemented Nakdong River sand were filled loosely or densely into a compaction mold. A piezoelectric sensor with 20 mm in diameter was installed within sand for impedance measurement. A small Nakdong River sand was mixed with cement ratios of 4, 8 12, 16% and then compacted into a specimen with 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. The specimen consisted of 6 layers with a sensor at the third layer. The impedance signals for 3 days and unconfined compressive strength at the 3rd day were measured. As the unit weight of uncemented sand increased, the resonant frequency increased slightly from 102 to 105 kHz but a conductance at resonant frequency decreased. For cemented sands, as the curing time and cement ratio increased, the resonant frequency increased significantly from 129 to 266 kHz but the conductance at resonant frequency decreased. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cemented sands was between 289 and 1,390 kPa for different cement ratios. The relationship of UCS and resonant frequency linearly increased but one with a conductance at resonant frequency was in inverse proportion.
