Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of functional massage and stretching, applied to the elbow and shoulder joints, on pain, tenderness threshold, and grip strength. Methods: A total of 29 individuals were assigned to a single site (n=15) or multiple sites (n=14). Pain measured through the visual analogue scale (VAS), tenderness threshold (TTH), and grip strength (GI) were measured before and four weeks after the intervention. Results: After four weeks of treatment, visual analogue scale significantly decreased in both groups (p<.05), and the tenderness threshold and grip strength significantly increased in both groups (p<.05). There was also a significant difference between the two groups (p<.05). Conclusion: The reduction of visual analogue scale and the increase in the tenderness threshold and grip strength were more significant in the multi-site treatment group than in the single-site treatment group.
Purpose: Deficits in lower-extremity function and trunk control ability have a negative impact on individuals with hemiplegia. This case report aimed to describe the effect of trunk stability exercises using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on trunk control ability, balance, and gait in a patient with hemiplegia. Methods: A 77-year-old man with hemiplegia and trunk and lower extremity impairment participated in this four-week training intervention. Results: The patient demonstrated improvements in trunk control ability, balance, and gait performance. Outcome measures (Fugl-Meyer Assessment Lower Extremity (FMA-LE), Trunk Control Test, Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go test, 10 Meter Walk test) were measured before and after the training program. Conclusion: The results of this case suggest that a trunk stability exercise using a PNF program may improve trunk control ability, balance, and gait in a patient with hemiplegia.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate PNF exercises for balance ability in elderly. Methods: This is a literature study with books and articles. Results: The balance ability in elderly is reduced by decreasing proprioception, visual and vestibular sensation. PNF exercise is highly efficient for functional activities to control posture and movement. It is also highly efficient for balance ability in elderly. This is considered effective exercise program for maintain and to promote balance ability in elderly. Conclusion: PNF exercise is highly efficient for functional activities to control posture and movement. In addition, it is also efficient for balancing posture and movement in cooperation with visual information and vestibular system. This exercise is considered to be effective exercise program to maintain posture and improve balance ability.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate PNF exercise, the athletic performances and the ability of exercise capacity in Taekwondo. Methods : This is a literature study with books and articles, seminar note and books for PNF international course. Results : The PNF exercise was efficient at improving flexibility and muscle strengthening in Taekwondo athletes. Kinematic characters of Yupchagi and Dollyuchagi in Taekwondo were analogous to Lower extremity Flexion-Abduction-Internal Rotation patterns in PNF, and the kinematic character of Apchagi was to analogous to Lower extremity Flexion-Adduction-External Rotation pattern in PNF. Movements of Upper extremities and Lower extremities during kicking were similar to PNF patterns. The PNF is efficient at improving athletic performances and the ability of exercise capacity in Taekwondo. Conclusion : The result of this study showed that PNF patterns and kicking that is one of the basic movement in Taekwondo have many similarities. With that PNF patterns was the training methods to improve flexibility and muscle strengthening, PNF patterns are considered to improve athletic performances and the ability of exercise capacity in Taekwondo.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sling exercise with PNF basic procedure in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods : This study included 14 patients with chronic low back pain, who were performed sling exercise combined PNF basic procedure. The exercise program comprised 3 sessions of 30 minutes per week for 8 weeks. The VAS(Visual analogue Scale) and BBS(Berg Balance Scale) were evaluated before and after training. All data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Results : Significant differences were observed the chronic low back pain patient for VAS, BBS. Chronic low back pain patient improved all test. Conclusion : Sling exercise with PNF basic procedure about chronic low back pain patient is very useful and effective. It is effective in clinical practice.
The purpose of this study is to investigate patient satisfaction for the spacial environment of the rehabilitative facilities, and by this to examine areas of patients' needs to develop patient-friendly improvement in spacial environment. 308 patients were surveyed at physical therapy centers of 6 hospitals or rehabilitative institutions in Daejeon with patient satisfaction questionnaire. The spatial environment satisfaction was categorized into 7 constructs and the data were statistically analyzed and compared by t-test and ANOVA according to the patient characteristics. As a result, inter-floor transfer was found to be the area with the least satisfaction, especially in the in-patient group. Locating floor level was the second lowest satisfied construct. Comfort was relatively highly satisfied construct overall, but patients with neurological disease had less satisfaction than with musculoskeletal disease. Patients in 20's were less satisfied in wayfinding than 60's. Satisfaction for interior design was lower in subject in 50's than 70's. These findings can be used as evidences to improve spacial environment design for rehabilitative facilities to the better patient satisfaction.

Background: This study investigated the effects of a single-leg hopping test and Q-angle when applying Mulligan taping, flossing bands, and a combination of Mulligan taping and flossing bands to chronic ankle instability (CAI) patients. Methods: The subjects of the study were 68 patients with chronic ankle instability, randomly divided into three groups receiving the following treatments: Mulligan taping (n=22), flossing bands (n=23), and a combination of Mulligan taping and flossing bands (n=23). The immediate effects of the treatments were evaluated using the single-leg hopping test and Q-angle measurement for functional movement before and after the intervention. Results: All three groups showed significant improvements in the single-leg hopping test after the intervention, and there was a significant difference between the performance of the simultaneous application group and the Mulligan taping group (p<.01). As a result of the post-hoc test, there was a significant difference in the simultaneous application group than in the mulligan taping group (p<.01). When measuring the Q-angle change during the activity of descending stairs, there was also a significant effect in all three groups, with no significant differences when comparing the changes between groups (p>.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, Mulligan taping and flossing bands were confirmed as effective interventions for the functional movement of the lower extremities in patients with CAI. This study can provide basic data on the effectiveness of interventions in patients with CAI.

The aim of this study was conducted to investigate the awareness and practice of personal hygiene and clinic hygiene of infection among physical therapist and to analyze the factors affecting it to provide basic data for the establishment of nosocomial infection management programs and policies in the physical therapist unit. In this study, 320 physical therapists were collected and analyzed. The study tool used a self-administered questionnaire to investigate general characteristics and awareness and practice of nosocomial infections. Responses were determined as 5-Likert scales and data were analysed using percentage, independent t-test, ANOVA. As a result of this study, 17.8% of infectious disease management departments were not found, and 41.6% of physical therapists were not educated about nosocomial infection. In addition, physical therapists with sufficient protective equipment for treatment were very low at 25.3%. Thus, in order to increase awareness and practice of nosocomial infection in the future, it is necessary to provide enough protective equipment for the treatment within the hospital, and it is considered that the nosocomial infection education of the physical therapist should be carried out regularly in the hospital itself.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the respiratory function of patients with stroke was different on the ground and under water. Methods: We recruited 14 adults who had experienced a stroke (12 male, 2 female) for our study. We measured forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second, maximum inspiratory pressure, and maximum expiratory pressure when the participants breathed on the ground and under water. On the ground, the participants were safely supported using a table and chair and were measured in a standing posture. For measuring under water, the participants were immersed in water in a standing position to clavicle height. The participants were measured while standing, and the assistant supported them when they needed help. The collected data were analyzed by a paired t-test. Results: Forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume at one second were significantly lower in water than on the ground when breathing at maximum. Maximum inspiratory pressure was not significantly different when standing on the ground or in water, but maximum expiratory pressure was significantly higher in water than on the ground. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the hydrostatic pressure affecting stroke patients immersed in water affects the forced expiratory volume at one second while reducing the forced vital capacity and increasing the maximum expiratory pressure.
