  • There is possibility of poor-state concrete filling condition due to segregation of aggregate and paste in reinforced concrete structure. This study was conducted to evaluate the flexural and shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams with different concrete filling conditions. Different concrete filling conditions were intentionally made such that the specimens was soundly cast to obtain the perfect concrete filling condition and cast in such a way that up to the longitudinal tensile reinforcement from the top, good concrete was filled while poor concrete was poured for the bottom part to simulate the poor strength, workability and unsatisfactory compaction. The test results indicate that have no effect of concrete filling conditions on the yielding strength of structures. But, have a great influence on the flexural ductility and shear capacity of structures.

  • In this study, sewer backfill material was developed to prevent sewer damage and ground subsidence. Laboratory test was performed in the field of CA replacement ratio, accelerator type and replacement ratio and W/M. The compression strength of backfill material was 0.55~0.64MPa below in W/M 70% and 0.20MPa over W/B 80%. Ice block was used to simulate the ground cavity and subsidence caused by sewer damage in application study. The existing sand compaction and the new backfill material was comparative estimated in field. The ground settlement of cross section was 23.4cm and that of longitudinal section was 27cm in sand compaction section, but the ground had not sunk in backfill material section.

  • Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of rammed aggregate piers (RAP) in soft ground with various interface conditions, area replacement ratio, aspect ratio and surcharge loads of pile and soil. And field modulus load test was carried out to predict the input parameters. Field prototype (unit cell) tests are in progress to compare the result of numerical analysis. Also a modified load transfer equation of RAP on soft foundation was proposed. According to the results, the behavior of RAP depended on such as interface conditions, settlement characteristics (free strain) and stress concentration ratio. On the other hand, maximun stress concentration ratio increased as area replacement ratio and aspect ratio increased, and it was remarkably affected by surcharge loads.

  • In this paper, the thermal properties of porous concrete containing natural fine aggregates in bottom ash aggregates were analyzed. In this study, natural fine aggregates were used for bottom ash aggregates to understand the material properties of each aggregate and then used as an aggregate for porous concrete. A porous concrete specimen was manufactured by fixing the water-binder ratio at 0.25 and designating the compaction at 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 MPa. Unit weight, total void ratio and thermal conductivity test were measured and discussed. As the compaction increased and the mixing ratio of natural fine aggregates increased, the unit weight and thermal conductivity increased, and the total void ratio decreased. In addition, the correlations between unit weight, total void ratio and thermal conductivity of porous concrete with previous experimental data were presented and the correlation coefficient (R2) was also analyzed.

  • Contamination of soil due to an oil spill influences its subsequent behavior. An investigation was conducted to study the effect of oil viscosity on compaction characteristics, coefficient of permeability, and shear strength. Water permeability was also determined by using Kerosene, Engine oil, and Crude-oil as contaminants. The test results indicate that the compaction characteristics are influenced by oil contamination. Direct shear test was conducted to investigate the effect of oil in the pore space in sandy ground. angle of internal friction of sand (based on total stress condition) decreases due to presence of oil within the pore spaces in sand.

  • Free-form buildings serve as landmarks, and interest and demand are increasing. However, in the case of free-form concrete members, different curved surfaces are required depending on the location where they are used, and the formwork is custom-made and used. Concrete is poured into the manufactured formwork to produce FCP (Free-form Concrete Panel). However, since it is an atypical building that requires precise curvature, compaction cannot be performed after concrete is poured. This leads to the occurrence of bughole, which reduce the strength and aesthetics of concrete. Therefore, in this study, we intend to conduct basic experiments to develop a magnetic compaction device that can be used for FCP. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the bug hole was improved when the magnetic compaction device was applied, and there was no significant difference in compressive strength and flexural strength. This technology can be used in the field of Free-form concrete where it is difficult to perform compaction work, and it is expected to be used as a basic research related to technology for new automatic compaction.

  • In order to make use of finished municipal landfill as a construction site, it is necessary to consider environmental and geotechnical aspects for the ground improvement and application of waste landfill. In environmental aspect, methods for management of landfill gas and leachate have to be established, and in geotechnical aspect, it is necessary to investigate available method for constructing structure foundation. In this study, the finished landfill was selected for pilot test. Investigation about the environmental characteristics of the waste landfill was performed to establish the methods far management of landfill gas according to monitoring the gas quantity and to investigate economical efficiency according to utilizing landfill gas. Investigation about cases of utilizing the waste landfill in Korea and abroad as construction site was performed and pilot tests were performed to analyze the improvement effects of methods such as dynamic compaction method and PG pile method available to waste landfill. The results of this study showed that economical profits could be gained by utilizing landfill gas and improved waste landfill, besides, dynamic compaction method was effective in case of improvement depth being shallow, and PG pile method was effective in case of improvement depth being deep.

  • In this paper, a mechanism of the soil structure reinforced by geosynthetics is discussed. The reinforcing mechanism is interpreted as an effect arising from the reinforcement works preventing the dilative deformation (negative dilatancy) of soil under shearing. A full-scale in-situ model test was carried out in Kanazawa of Japan (1994), and in the laboratory test the strength and the characteristics of deformation conducting a constant volume shear test are examined. The parameters needed in the FEM are also applied by using the experimental data. The elasto-plastic finite element simulation is carried out, and the results are quantitatively compared with that of experiment. As a results, it is known that the theoretical predictions could explain effectively the experimental results which are obtained by a full-scale in-situ model test.

  • In this study the foundation methods which our ancestors, through a historical age as early as three kingdom's period, adopted for their civil structures and buildings have been reviewed by investigating the discovered relics. It is shown that they already, from about 2000 years ago, had applied various foundation techniques considering the structure types and the foundation soil conditions. The ancient foundation methods are categorized as artificially laid alternating soil and boulder layers under heavy structures, compacted soil base under wide loaded area, stone column under pillars of buildings, stacked long stone footing for special buildings such as palace buildings, and piling for bridges, They are analyzed with respect to current foundation techniques.

  • In general, pipe laying works are performed by constructing underground facilities such as pipes and then refilling the rest of the area with sand or soil. However, there are many problems in the compaction process such as difficulties in tampering around the underground facility and low compaction efficiency. Such problems cause deformation and damage to the underground pipes during refilling work and ultimately cause road sinks. Construction methods using CLSM are one of the typical methods to solve these issues, and recently, studies on CLSM using coal ash, which has similar engineering properties as sand, have been actively performed to protect environment and recycle resources. While many studies have been conducted to recycle fly ash in many ways, the demand for recycling bottom ash is increasing as most of the bottom ash is not recycled and reclaimed at ash disposal sites. Therefore, in order to find bottom ash applications using eco-friendly soil binders that are environmentally beneficial and conform with CLSM standards, this study investigated flow characteristics and strength change characteristics of eco-friendly soil binders, weathered granite soil, a typical site-generated soil, bottom ash, and fly ash mixed soil and evaluated the soil pollution to present CLSM application methods using bottom ash.
