  • To figure out the problems of flame retardant treatment (FRT) on wooden buildings, field investigation and analysis of statistical data are performed. After FRT on historical wooden building, efflorescence and exfoliation showed most often. These problems appeared especially on column, rafter and Ga-gu (Ingredients for supporting structure of a roof) which are liberally spreaded. To compare before and after FRT, analyzed 20 elements using P-XRF. In this process, found sulfur which informs FRT. This helped set up nondestructive assay. Through this process, confirmed field application by analysis residue component of Songgwang-sa Temple.

  • This paper presents the digitally implementable methods to preserve and restore the traditional wooden buildings, which are the typical "Korean Cultural Contents," by using computer and multimedia technologies. We first define the meaning of the digital implementation of Korean traditional wooden buildings and important points to be considered. In addition, we present the steps and methods for implementation. Furthermore, we considered wooden materials, structures and Danchung (patterns of paintings on the wooden pieces) in implementing of Gongpo (wooden structure system) for both Geunjeongjeon of Gyeongbok Palace and Injungjeon of Changduk Palace by using the presented methods. We present the mechanical method to digitally implement wooden buildings by using numerical ratios of Gongpo. The other advantage of this paper over the other studies, which focus on implementation of exterior of wooden buildings, is presenting the methods how to show the complicated relations of inner parts in Korea wooden buildings. Thus, it can be practically used in preserving and restoring Korean traditional wooden buildings.

  • Title of management of cultural asset architectures made of wood managed by nation or local government is separated and there is a high concern about the disappearance of many national cultural asset architectures by fire. This study investigated the effectiveness of major installed appliances in terms of disaster prevention, and problems by early suppression in the event of fire and by mobilization of fire engines in depth. Also, this study derived problems by conducting an in-depth individual interview on interested parties for installation of fire extinguishing system by related law and to improve system to make realistic maintenance. As a result, it was identified that they have reached the positive aspects of protecting cultural asset architectures from disaster as fire by maintaining and managing facilities by establishing proper disaster prevention measures because they are surrounded by mountain or buildings are contiguous. Wooden cultural asset architectures are often excluded from regulation for installation of fire-fighting facilities under the Fire Services Act because most of wooden cultural assets are detached buildings, occupy small area, and are one-storied architecture. The best method is having extinguishing ability themselves according to the manual by making fire manual as management policy before the outbreak of fire. This study intends to suggest a follow-up study for practical considerations to establish or designate a professional management agency for them to protect important national cultural heritage buildings at the state level before they are destroyed by fire.

  • The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to develope the general model for capture of the linear and nonlinear response of a flexible diaphragm building in which there are significant contributions from the out-of-plane walls. Two single-story single-diaphragm half scale reinforced masonry buildings were tested by researchers at the United States Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL). The first had a metal deck diaphragm. The second specimen had a diaphragm with a single layer of diagonal lumber sheathing, A multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) approach is adopted in this paper. The required stiffnesses and strengths of the components within this model are determined.

  • In order to grasp and evaluate the characteristics and the safety of traditional wooden building, we select one of the representative traditional wooden building, Buseoksa Muryangsujeon in this study. After the two and three-dimensional structural analysis of this building are performed, the results are compared and analyzed. Following main conclusion are obtained: 1) By comparison between the results of two and three-dimensional structural analysis, they show that the exterior members of this building tend to transfer more load in the three-dimensional analysis. 2) The result of three-dimensional structural analysis shows that the every member stress of Buseoksa Muryangsujeon except Chobang and Jangyon is below allowable stress. 3) For exact modelling of joints of members in traditional wooden building such as Gongpo, it is necessary to accumulate and analyze the technical data through structural test and systematic analysis study.

  • A fire detector installed in wood cultural properties has not have selected the detector type appropriate for the features of cultural properties and the structure of wood fire after the fire in Sungnyemun-Gate since 2008. Applying wooden cultural properties different from the general architecture of the structure and fire characteristics is difficult. Therefore, buildings were classified into four shape types and field survey and wooden architecture structure characteristics to identify the problems of the detectors installed on wooden cultural property buildings. The problems appeared to lack the adaptability to external fire detection sensor selection and missing fire detectors installed in accordance with the place. To solve the problem, the closed and open space of the rooms used a smoke detector, outdoor select flame or fixed temperature linear detector to solve the problem.

  • A number of wooden built heritage remain in Korea, and most have been damaged by various biological factors including termite. Owing to the irreversible damage caused by termites, wooden built heritage are losing their authenticity and structural stability. In this study, Area-Wide Integrated Termite Management(AW-ITM) was proposed to prevent termite damage. First, to understand the locational characteristics of these sites, the distance from adjacent forests and surrounding forest areas was analyzed for 182 national designated wooden built heritage(national treasures, treasures) using the Geographic Information System(GIS). By analyzing existing pest control projects(2003-2020) and the components of the ITM, the characteristics of termite control for cultural heritages were determined. Based on these results, the cultural heritage sites and their surrounding spaces were divided into three areas, and the types of cultural properties were divided into six types according to the location and number of buildings. Along with this, termite control measures were proposed for each area and type. The concept of AW-ITM has been partially applied to the "Comprehensive Control of Termites in wooden built heritages Sites" by the Cultural Heritage Administration. Caution must be taken with regard to the establishment of a cultural heritage management policy; AW-ITM should be applied on a trial basis with the results then being carefully analyzed and reflected in the establishment of policies pertaining to the conservation management of cultural heritage.

  • The damage from the underground termite cannot be discovered with peculiar appearance of building but hollow phenomenon will occur. But there is no case in Korea as a non-destructive measurement of termite activation. Therefore, this research constructs non-destructive diagnostic techniques for wooden cultural properties using microwave detector (Termatrac, Australia). Result of maximun distance were measured 16cm (Pine tree, sensitivity 5, 6), 17cm (Zelkova and Douglas fir, sensitivity 5, 6). These results are expected that can be applied in the field. Result of field test using microwave detector, 33.8% of the wooden cultural properties were damaged by termites, and until now 7.8% (18 buildings) are being damaged in nationwide (total 231 buildings). Based on the above results, microwave detector will be able to be utilized effectively for detecting termite, preventing intrusion in wooden structure, and making full use of monitoring system periodically. In addition, it could be of great worth in preventing insect and microorganism in wooden structure.
