In order to determine the effective way of measuring the Mode I stress intensity factor($K_1$) by means of the alternating current potential drop(ACPD) technique for a material containing a two-dimensional surface crack, the change in magnetic flux in the air due to load was studied theoretically and experimentally. The magnetic flux in the air between crack surfaces is uniform and is not changed by increasing the load in the specimen and experimental results are the same as those obtained from theoretical analysis. Therefore, the change in potential drop due to load in the measuring system which was designed to induce a large amount of electro-motive force was caused by the change in internal inductance of material and the change in the mutual inductance concerned with internal inductance of material.

In order to develop an effective way of measuring the mode I stress intensity factor, $K_I$, by the technique based on the alternating current potential drop (ACPD), the effect of the magnetic flux in the air on the change in potential drop due to load for both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials containing a two-dimensional surface crack was investigated. Additionally the effects of the demagnetization and the crack length on the change in potential drop were examined. In the case that the measuring system was designed to induce a large amount of electromotive force, the amount of the change in potential drop due to load was shown to increase largely Also the relationship between the change in potential drop and that in $K_I$ was indicated to be linear without any treatment and it was shown that the demagnetization had almost no effect on the change in potential drop. The change in potential drop did not depend on the crack length but on the measuring system. For the application of the ACPD technique to determine $K_I$.
The objective of this study is to examine the fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages such as critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy, and bilinear softening curve based on the concepts of the effective-elastic crack model and the cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By taking various strengths and ages, load-crack mouth opening displacement curves were obtained, and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics and the finite element method. The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and fracture energy increased, and critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete ages from 1 day to 28 days. By numerical analysis four parameters of bilinear softening curve from 1 day to 28 days were obtained. The obtained fracture parameters and bilinear softening curves at early ages may be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.

This paper presents stress distribution around a central crack tip in a tensile plate using phase-shifting photoelasticity and a power series stress function. Isochromatic data along the straight lines far from the crack tip were obtained by phase shifting photoelasticity and were used as input data of the hybrid experimental analysis. By using the complex-type power series stress equations, the photoelastic stress distribution fields in the vicinity of the crack and the mode I stress intensity factor were obtained. With the help of image processing software, accuracy and reliability was enhanced by twice multiplying and sharpening the measured isochromatics. Actual and reconstructed fringes were compared qualitatively. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations of the percentage errors were calculated for all measured input data by varying the number of terms in the stress function. The experimental results agreed with those predicted by finite element analysis and empirical equation within 2 percent error.

The finite element method were used to determine the stress intensity factor of cracked plate. The stress method, displacement method and J Integral are most popular finte element method. ANSYS proposed another a kind of displacement method. In this paper, it was examined that the accuracy and utility of the ANSYS method could believable to determine the stress intensity factors of centered inclined crack. Generally, inclined crack has two portion of stress intensity factors, tensile mode F1 and shear mode F2. For the purpose of increasing the accuracy of stress intensity factors, examined the effect of the numbers of nodes and elements, crack tip element size and number of partition of the crack tip vicinity. It was found that the method proposed by ANSYS is useful and has high accuracy. Accuracy of calculated stress intensity factors was increased by increase of the number of nodes and elements, and at the small size of crack tip elements can get more highly accuracy.

Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode 1/3 stress intensity factors $K_{1}$ and $K_{3}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. the parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length .lambda. crack slant angle .alpha, thickness ratio .betha. and width ratio .omega. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The effect of thickness ratio .betha. on $K_{1}$ is relatively great in comparison to $K_{3}$.

In order to determine the mode I stress intensity factor ($K_I$) by means of the alternating current potential drop(ACPD) technique, the change in potential drop due to load for a paramagnetic material containing a two-dimensional surface crack was examined. The cause of the change in potential drop and the effects of the magnetic flux and the demagnetization on the change in potential drop were clarified by using the measuring systems with and without removing the magnetic flux from the circumference of the specimen. The change in potential drop was linearly decreased with increasing the tensile load and was caused by the change in conductivity near the crack tip. The reason of decreasing the change in potential drop with increasing the tensile load was that the increase of the conductivity near the crack tip due to the tensile load caused the decreases of the resistance and internal inductance of the specimen The relationship between the change in potential drop and the change in $K_I$ was not affected by demagnetization and was independent of the crack length.

The fatigue crack propagation of random short fiber SMC composite material was investigated. In macroscopic viewpoint, SMC composite material was treated as isotropic material and was analyzed in terms of conventional fracture mechanics. Experiments were conducted on mode I and mixed respectively and various loading level was applied to each mode. Fatigue crack growth can be explained in three steps and most of fatigue life is consumed in initial crack growth. In this experiments, power law, i.e, da/dN=C(C.DELTA.K)$^{m}$ , between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range, was valid and the value of the exponent m is about 10, which is much higher than that of other metals. Fracture mechanism was also investigated by SEM fractographic study.
