When the values of design variables change, mode switching can often occur. If the mode of interest is not tracked, the frequencies and modes for design optimization may be miscalculated owing to modes that differ from the intended ones. Thus, mode tracking must be employed to identify the frequencies and modes of interest whenever the values of design variables change during optimization. Furthermore, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) must be performed for design problems with design variables containing uncertainty. In this research, we perform RBDO considering the mode tracking of a compressive coil spring, i.e., a component of the joint spring that supports a compressor, with design variables containing uncertainty by using only kriging metamodels based on multiple responses approach (MRA) without existing mode tracking methods. The reliability analyses for RBDO are employed using kriging metamodel-based Monte Carlo simulation.
Ground wave is an acoustic wave propagating at a sediment sound speed in the case that sediment sound speed is constant with depth, which is explained by modal dispersion effects. In this paper, the ground wave in time domain is simulated using the ray-based approach, which is possible because the modal dispersion can be explained by the guiding of energy caused by reflection and refraction in the waveguide geometry. For a Pekeris waveguide, the ground wave can be interpreted as a sequence of head waves, called a head wave sequence [Choi and Dahl, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 119, 3660-3668 (2006)]. The ground wave is simulated by convolution of the source signal with a channel impulse response of the head wave sequence, which is compared with simulated signals obtained via a Fourier synthesis of a complex parabolic equation (PE) field.

The problem of designing dynamic output feedback sliding mode controllers for uncertain multivariable linear systems is considered. Using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs), a feasibility condition for the design problem is derived. Explicit fomulas of the gain matrices of a full order output feedback sliding mode controller in terms of the solution matrices of the LMI condition is given. A simple LMI-based algorithm for designing output feedback sliding mode controllers is also given. Finally, numerical design examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Existing studies have suggested Universal Curve only for supplemental damping by damper. Therefore net damping has been determined by means of arithmetic summation between intrinsic, aero-damping of cable and supplemental damping of damper. However linear combination approach by means of the arithmetic summation is not enough theoretical background. So validity of this approach should be verified in order to design adequate cable-damper system by engineers. This study establishes governing differential equation which can consider intrinsic, aero-damping and supplemental damping as well. And also analysis method is solved by combination of muller method and successive iteration method. Consequently, this study succeeds in verification for validity of linear combination approach. As a result of this study, linear combination approach is limitedly effective in case of low stiffness and optimum damping coefficient of damper, short distance from support to damper, lower vibration mode, low aero-damping, and normal windy environment. Whereas this study will be effective in case of opposite conditions, and existing studies or linear combination approach occur to further error. Meaning of this study presents exact solution for net damping of cable-damper system, and verifies linear combination approach by means of the analysis method. In the future, if monitoring of optimum damping coefficient of a damper against aero-damping is feasible on time, algorithm of this study will be available for control of cable and semi-active damper system such as magneto-rheological damper.

This paper presents an LMI-based method to design sliding mode observers for a class of uncertain systems. Using LIs we derive an existence condition of a sliding mode observer guaranteeing a stable sliding motion. And we give explicit formulas of the observer gain matrices. We also consider sliding mode observer design problems under an α-stability constraint or an LQ performance bound constraint. Finally, we give a numerical design example.

The fin of high speed air vehicle is composed of skins and strong skeletons. In the flutter analysis, the eigenmodes of a fin are used for evaluating the unsteady aerodynamic force and the modal approach is applied for solving the flutter equation in both time and frequency domain. Therefore, the proper eigenmodes used for a modal flutter analysis should be chosen. For the appropriate choice of eigenmodes, when there exist local modes of a skin in the high modes, the effects of those modes on the unsteady aerodynamic force and flutter characteristics are anlalyzed.

A practical algorithm of generating most probable states in decreasing order of probability of the network system state is suggested for approximating the performance of multi-mode network system using algebraic structure of the system states. Most complex system having network structure with multi-mode unit state is difficult to evaluate the performance or reliability due to exponentially increasing size of state space. Hence not an exact computing method but an approximated one is reasonable approach to solve the problem. To achieve the goal we should enumerate the network system states in order as a pre-processing step. In this paper, we suggest an improved algorithm of generating most probable multi-mode states to get the ordered system states efficiently. The method is compared with the previous algorithms in respective to memory requirement and empirical computing time. From the experiment proposed method has some advantages with regard to the criterion of algorithm performance. We investigate the advantages and disadvantage by illustrating experiment examples.
The paper describes a theoretical study on the flexural vibration of an elastic flat bar with periodically nonuniform material properties. The approximate solution of the natura1 frequency and mode shape has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidify and mass density. The numerical solution obtained by using the finite element method verifies the trend of the approximate solution. It appears that distributed vibrations exist in the low modes, and this approach can be extended to the vibration analysis of the p1ate in the flat panel speaker.

A general characterization procedure based on the extraction of a 2n-port admittance matrix corresponding to n uniform coupled lines on the multi-layered substrate using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) technique is presented. In this paper, the frequency-dependent normal mode parameters are obtained from the 2n-port admittance matrix to analyze multi-layered asymmetric coupled line structure, which in turn provides the frequency-dependent propagation constant, effective dielectric constant, and line-mode characteristic impedances. To illustrate the technique, several practical coupled line structures on multi-layered substrate have been simulated. Especially, embedded conductor structures have been simulated. Comparisons with Spectral Domain Method are given, and their results agree well. It is shown that the FDTD based time domain characterization procedure is an excellent broadband simulation tool for the design of multiconductor coupled lines on multilayered PCBs as well as thick or thin hybrid structures.
