  • In the latest intelligent computing environments, the self-adaptive software, as new software paradigm, which modifies its own behavior in response to changes in its operating environment is needed. To develop the self-adaptive software, it is necessary to analyze and design the context of software as well as the structure and the behavior of software. We need more efforts for self-adaptive software development than for traditional software development because we need more activities and technologies like context modeling and adaptation to develop the self-adaptive software. In this paper, we present the product line architecture for self-adaptive software and templates of artifacts to improve the efficiency of development through a reuse methodology. The artifacts of the architecture support the systematic reuse activities of core assets by expressing the commonality and variability of product line.

  • Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) and Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) are two major frameworks for modeling, representing and reasoning about causal knowledge. Despite their extensive use in causal knowledge engineering, there is no reported work which compares their respective roles. This paper aims to fill the gap by providing a qualitative comparison of the two frameworks through a systematic analysis based on some inherent features of the frameworks. We proposed a set of comparison criteria which covers the entire process of causal knowledge engineering, including modeling, representation, and reasoning. These criteria are usability, expressiveness, reasoning capability, formality, and soundness. The results of comparison have revealed some important facts about the characteristics of FCM and BBN, which will help to determine how FCM and BBN should be used, with respect to each other, in causal knowledge engineering.

  • Data on the Internet are usually represented and transfered as XML. the XML data is represented as a tree and therefore, object repositories are well-suited to store and query them due to their modeling power. XML queries are represented as regular path expressions and evaluated by traversing each object of the tree in object repositories. Several indexes are proposed to fast evaluate regular path expressions. However, in some cases they may not cover all possible paths because they require a great amount of disk space. In order to efficiently evaluate the queries in such cases, we propose an optimized traversing which combines the signature method and block traversing. The signature approach shrink the search space by using the signature information attached to each object, which hints the existence of a certain label in the sub-tree. The block traversing reduces disk I/O by early evaluating the reachable objects in a page. We conducted diverse experiments to show that the hybrid approach achieves a better performance than the other naive ones.

  • Application layer multicast(ALM) has been developed as an alternative to support the multi-receiver applications due to the slow deployment of IP multicast. Unlike routers in IP multicast, end systems participating in a ALM session are not optimized for relaying data and have various processing and network capacity. Therefore, with the increased role of end systems, the delay incurred at the end systems occupy large portion of the end-to-end delay. In this paper, we model the end system delay of ALM sessions and analyze its impact on the performance of the existing ALM schemes. Furthermore, we propose an enhanced scheme, based on the existing mesh-based scheme, which reflects the end system delay We also evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by simulation and show that it reduces the end-to-end delay compared with the existing scheme.

  • Conditional correlation between financial time series plays an important role in risk management, asset allocation and portfolio selection and therefore diverse efforts for modeling conditional correlations in multivariate-GARCH processes have been made in last two decades. In particular, CCC (cf. Bollerslev, 1990) and DCC(dynamic conditional correlation, cf. Engle, 2002) models have been commonly used since they are relatively parsimonious in the number of parameters involved. This article is concerned with DCC modeling for multivariate GARCH processes in comparison with CCC specification. Various multivariate financial time series are analysed to illustrate possible advantages of DCC over CCC modeling.

  • Riverbank filtration is a natural process, using alluvial aquifers to remove contaminants and pathogens in river water for the production of drinking water. In Korea, most of the drinking water is supplied by surface water in-take. However, maintaining the quality of the drinking water becomes more and more difficult due to the increase of contamination. In riverbank filtration, the understanding of contaminant transport is an important task for the production of high quality drinking water and for the maintenance of facilities. In this paper, the transport behavior of hydrophobic organic contaminants is investigated when contaminants coexist with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and bacteria. In the developed model, the aquifer is thought of as a four phase system: two mobile colloidal phases, an aqueous phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. The model equations are solved numerically for various situations. Results indicate that the presence of colloidal matters can enhance the mobility of contaminant significantly and that partitioning coefficients play an important role in the process.

  • Stereo cameras are the most widely used sensing systems for automated machines including robots to interact with their three-dimensional(3D) working environments. The position of a target point in the 3D world coordinates can be measured by the use of stereo cameras and the camera calibration is an important preliminary step for the task. Existing camera calibration techniques can be classified into two large categories - linear and nonlinear techniques. While linear techniques are simple but somewhat inaccurate, the nonlinear ones require a modeling process to compensate for the lens distortion and a rather complicated procedure to solve the nonlinear equations. In this paper, a method employing a neural network for the calibration problem is described for tackling the problems arisen when existing techniques are applied and the results are reported. Particularly, it is shown experimentally that by utilizing the function approximation capability of multi-layer neural networks trained by the back-propagation(BP) algorithm to learn the error pattern of a linear technique, the measurement accuracy can be simply and efficiently increased.

  • The present study interviewed Eight novice supervisors (i.e., counselling psychologists with fewer than 5 years of experience) to investigate the need for formal supervision training. A consensual qualitative research method was used to analyze data, and the result found four main domains, 12 sub-domains, and 33 categories. The results also indicated that novice supervisors believe their own supervisors and expert supervisors have a great understanding of individual counselling cases, and that the role of a supervisor is to help supervisees' ability to understand each case better. Novice supervisors generally take their own supervisors as their role models, although most of them did not receive formal training from their own supervisors. Novice supervisors seek advice on supervision from their colleagues or their own supervisors but still find supervising difficult. They also believe there is a great need for clearly set guidelines or a manual on providing effective supervision.

  • In this paper, we perform analysis of the performance of low-power communication technology, IEEE 802.15.4 MAC (Media Access Control) protocol used in internet of things. Wide variety of devices in internet of things generate different kinds of traffic characteristics and heterogeneous traffic environment is therefore considered in contrast to existing works. With the help of the Markov chain the performance of the protocol is derived as a function of the MAC parameters and based on the results a framework to determine energy-efficient optimal MAC parameters for applications in real time is proposed. Proposed method is shown to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption through performance comparison over application scenarios compared to operation with fixing MAC parameters, and its practicability on small devices with limited computing power is verified through evaluating the accuracy and speed of the proposed framework.

  • The dynamic behaviors of a KT-1 family aircraft nose landing gear have been analyzed and the optimal design of an aircraft shock absorber has been conducted to improve efficiency of shock energy absorption. The nose landing gear is modeled as a 2 DOF system using ADAMS and various operational and environmental landing conditions were considered. The results of dynamic simulation for various landing conditions agree well with experiments. Also the effect of parameters of a shock strut on the dynamic behaviors and on shock energy absorption of the nose landing gear has been evaluated for optimal design to define design variables. It has been found that the parameters of a shock strut such as oil-density and orifice area have more effects on dynamic behaviors than those of operation conditions. Optimal design is performed to maximize the efficiency of shock energy absorption using Feasible Direction Method. As a result the design values of the shock strut for maximum efficiency of shock energy absorption are derived and it turns out that efficiency and dynamic behaviors of the nose landing gear were improved by the optimal design.
