  • The catalytic combustor has the advantage of stable combustion under very lean conditions with low emissions of $NO_x$, CO and unburned hydrocarbon(UHC). Notwithstanding these advantages, the commercial application of the catalytic combustion has been delayed due to the complicated reaction process. For the stable operation of catalytic combustor, study on the combustion characteristics of the catalytic combustor is needed. So, in this study, numerical study on the propane combustion characteristics of the catalytic combustor with Pd-based catalyst is performed.

  • Downstream interactions between lean premixed flames with mutually different fuels of syngas and $CH_4$ have been numerically investigated particularly on and near lean extinction limits. The interaction characteristics between lean premixed (50% $H_2$ + 50% CO)-air and $CH_4$-air flames were shown to be quite different from those between the same hydrocarbon flames. The lean extinction boundaries were of slanted shape, thereby implying strong interactions. The weaker flames had negative flame speeds on the upper extinction boundaries, whereas the weaker flame speeds on the lower extinction boundaries were both negative and positive. The results also showed that the flame interaction characteristics did not follow the general tendency with the dependency of Lewis number in downstream interactions between the same hydrocarbon flames. Importance of chemical interaction in flame characteristics is discussed in the downstream interactions between lean premixed (50% $H_2$ + 50% CO)-air and $CH_4$-air flames.

  • Flickering behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated. Unsteady behaviors of the flame were monitored by a high speed ICCD camera and the flickering frequency was defined as the number of flame curvatures passing a fixed spatial point in a second. Unlike previous studies in which flames are in open condition so that the flickering mechanism is an unstable interaction of hot buoyant products with the ambient air, flames in this study are surrounded by a tube which means they are not open to ambient air, so that there is no interaction between hot buoyant products and ambient air. Despite the fact, there exists flickering phenomena and the flickering frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 50 Hz which is wider compared to previous studies. We relate the flickering mechanism to flame-generated vorticity and analytic solution for locally approximated flow is used. As a result, the relationship between flickering wavelength and dimensionless vorticity is acquired and the cause of higher range of flickering frequency is explained.

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the combustion characteristics of stratified methane-air mixture under several initial charge conditions in the author's previous reports. The results showed that the improvement of thermal efficiency and reduction of heat loss was realized simultaneously by using 2-stage injection method. This paper deals with the reason why the stratified combustion has showed better combustion rate through the measurement and analysis of chemiluminescence of C $H^{*}$ and $C_{2}$$^{*}$ radicals. An optic fiber bundle is used to measure the local emission of C $H^{*}$ and $C_{2}$$^{*}$ radicals to map the relationship between the excess air ratio and local radical intensity ratio in the combustion vessel at 5 mm apart form the geometric center. The results show that there exist a relationship between the intensity ratio and the air-fuel ratio. It is revealed that the improvement of combustion rate in a lean-stratified mixture is realized through the 2-stage injection method. method.

  • An experimental investigation on the combustion behavior of pulverized coal particles was performed using the cross-section micrography techniques while sample coal particles were collected in-situ from the flow reactor. The coal particles were representative of pulverized bituminous coal undergoing a raped pyrolysis and combustion, however, quenched at the time when the particles were deposited onto a sample plate. The internal structure of coal was observed to change as deposited. Upon injection into a flow reactor, bituminous coal particles showed many holes which represented internal pore formation during the pyrolysis. The relative portion of the remaining matrix of coal was decreasing as the residence time progressed. This direct observation of cross-section of burning particles enabled better understanding of the coal combustion behavior.

  • A two-phase anaerobic reactor with a submerged microfiltration system was tested for its ability to produce methane energy from organic wastewater. A membrane separation system with periodic backwashing with compressed air was submerged in the acidogenic reactor. The cartridge type of microfiltration (MF) membrane with pore size of $0.5{\mu}m$ (mixed esters of cellulose) was tested. An AUBF (Anaerobic Upflow Sludge Bed Filter: 1/2 packed with plastic media) was used for the methanogenic reactor. Soluble starch was used as a substrate. The COD removal was investigated for various organic loading with synthetic wastewater of 5,000 mg starch/L. When the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the acidogenic reactor was changed from 10 to 4.5 days, the organic loading rate (OLR) varied from 0.5 to $1.0kg\;COD/m^3-day$. When the HRT of the methanogenic reactor was changed from 2.8 to 0.5 days, the OLR varied from 0.8 to $5.8kg\;COD/m^3-day$. The acid conversion rate of the acidogenic reactor was over 80% in the 4~5 days of HRT. The overall COD removal efficiency of the methanogenic reactor showed over 95% (effluent COD was below 300 mg/L) under the highly fluctuating organic loading condition. A two-phase anaerobic reactor showed an excellent acid conversion rate from organic wastewater due to the higher biomass concentration than the conventional system. A methanogenic reactor combined with sludge bed and filter, showed an efficient COD and SS removal.

  • The performance of the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) using multi-layer electrode, which prepared by various anode catalysts and Nafion membranes, was studied for reducing the amount of the metal catalyst loaded in the MEA system. The amount of the catalyst used in this experiment was $3-4 mg/cm^2$ in cathode and $1-2 mg/cm^2$ in anode, respectively. The best performance was to be $230 mS/cm^2$ of MEA3 at $90^{\circ}C$ and 2 bar in this experiment. However, the overall performance of the DMFC was maintained almost the same compared to the general commercial catalyst systems.

  • Numerical simulations of high temperature catalytic combustion have been performed for the application to a gas turbine combustor. Dependences of inlet temperature and pressure on the distributions of temperature and species concentrations were investigated using plug flow model with detailed homogeneous and heterogeneous chemistries of methane-air mixtures. Honeycomb typecombustor deposited with Pt catalyst of 100mm in length and 26mm in diameter is used. The results show that rapid increase of temperature profile occurs earlier with the increase of inlet temperature and the decrease of inlet pressure. The condition which catalytic combustion is stabilized exists at certain range of inlet temperature and pressure. The state of catalytic combustion is also confirmed by the distributions of species concentration.

  • The laminar burning velocity was measured using a spherical combustion bomb with central ignition. Mixtures with equivalence ratio between 0.6 and 1.2, were tested. The computation was carried out for the burning velocity using premix code of Chemkin program under the unburned gas pressure of 0.5bar-30bar and temperature of 300K-700K at ${\Phi}1.0$. The results showed little difference between these two methods. The burning velocity was decreased by increasing the pressure and increased by increasing the temperature. The burning velocity was predicted by using the following equations $$S_L(m/s) = S_{st}(T/300)^{1.85}(P)^{-0.45}$$ $$(0.5bar{\leq}P{\leq}30bar,\;300K{\leq}T{\leq}700K)$$).

  • Lean premix combustion is a best method in low $NO_x$ gas turbine combustor and we must know the characteristics of NO emission in high temperature and pressure condition in premix flame. Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the NO emission characteristics by adopting a counterflow as a model problem using detailed chemical kinetics. Methane $(CH_4)$ was used as a test fuel which is the main fuel of natural gas. The tested parameters were stretch rate, equivalence ratio, initial temperature, and pressure in premix flame. Results showed that NO emission was high in low stretch rate, near stoichiometric equivalence ratio, high initial temperature, and high pressure. Also, the pressure effect was sensitive in high temperature condition.
