  • Piles of a bridge pier are connected with the column through the pile cap (footing). Behavior of the pile foundation can be different according to the connection method between piles and the pile cap. Connection methods between pile heads and the pile cap are divided into two groups : rigid connections and hinge connections. Domestic design code has been specified to use rigid connection method for the highway bridge. In the rigid connection method, maximum bending moment of a pile occurs at the pile head and this helps the pile to prevent the excessive displacement. Rigid methods are also good to improve the seismic performance. However, some specifications prescribe that conservative results through investigations of both the fixed-head condition and the free-head condition should be reflected in the design. This statement may induce an over-estimated design for the bridge which has high-quality structures with casing covered drilled shafts and the PC-house contained pile cap. Because the assumption of free-head conditions (hinge connections) is unreal for the elevated pile cap system with multiple piles of the long span sea-crossing bridges. On the other hand, elastic displacement method to evaluate the pile reactions under the pile cap is not suitable for this type of bridges due to impractical assumptions. So, full modeling techniques which analyze the superstructure and the substructure simultaneously should be performed. Loads and stress state of the large diameter drilled shaft and the pile cap for Incheon Bridge which will be the longest bridge of Korea were investigated through the full modeling for rigid connection conditions.

  • In this research the behavior of a new type of a single pile under lateral loading and against slope sliding is studied. Especially, the section of a new pile is determined throughout experiments, and the single pile behavior under lateral loading and the effect of improvement in slope stability by using new type of pile (gear-shaped) were studied. As a result, it is known that maximum deflection of gear-shaped pile is far smaller than that of traditional PC circular pile for the same lateral loading. And lateral load of gear-shaped pile at allowable deflection was bigger than that of PC circular pile. From the comparison between two hypes of piles, it can be seen that the degree of improvement of safety factor in slope was higher in gear-shaped pile than that of PC pile under the same condition, and it results in the reduction of the number of stabilizing piles in a slope.

  • A numerical analysis on the effect of increasing tensile stiffness of the geosynthetics on the soil displacement and pile efficiency was conducted. Parametric studies by changing the stiffness of soft soil, internal friction and dilatancy angles of the embankment material, and flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics were carried out. In general, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics improves the pile efficiency, whereas the amount of its improvement depends on the condition of parameters. In case of the sufficiently low stiffness of the soft soil or high flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics, a noticeable increase in the pile efficiency can be observed. When the stiffness of the soft soil is very low, the increase in the stiffness of the geosynthetics can significantly reduce the vertical displacement in the piled embankment. When the flexual stiffness of the composite layer is sufficiently high, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics can greatly improve the pile efficiency.

  • The bridge tested was 3 spans 90m-long PSC beam concrete bridge with a stub-type abutment which had a skew of 60$^{\circ}$ about the axis of bridge. A cement concrete was placed at the superstructural slab of the bridge. Inclinometers and straingauges were installed at piles as well. During 7 days-curing of superstructural slab, the pile behavior in response to hydration heat and drying shrinkage of the slab was monitored. Then monitored values were compared with the horizontal movement obtained from the HACOM program and the calculated lateral behavior obtained from the nonlinear p-y curves of pile. As a result, lateral behavior of H-piles by the field measurement occurred due to the influence of hydration heat and drying shrinkage obtained during curing of superstructural concrete. The lateral displacements by hydration heat and drying shrinkage were 2.2mmand 1.4mm respectively. It was observed as well that the inflection point of lateral displacement of pile was shown at 1.3m down from footing base. It means that the horizontal movement of stub abutment did not behave as the fixed head condition of a pile but behave as a similar condition. The measured bending stress did not show the same behavior as the fixed head condition of pile but showed a similar condition. The increment of maximum bending stress obtained from the nonlinear p-y curves of pile was about 300(kgf/$\textrm{km}^2$) and was 2 times larger than measured values regardless of installation places of straingauges. Meanwhile, lateral load, maximum lateral displacement, maximum bending stress and maximum bending moment of pile showed a linear behavior as curing of superstructural concrete slab.

  • When bridge abutments are constructed on pile foundations in unstable slope, horizontal deflections may be developed in the piles and the abutments due to lateral soil movements arisen from backfills. In most of the above mentioned cases, the piles are situated in a soft layer where lateral earth pressures are developed between the piles and the soils. The undesirable lateral earth pressures decreases the stability of the piles. However, the piles may have a preventive effect against lateral soil movements and improve the stability of the slope. For the stability problem of such slope containing piles in a row, two kinds of analyses for the slope-stability and the pile-stability have to be performed. The whole stability of bridge abutments on pile foundation can be obtained only by the stabilization for both the slope and the piles. A reasonable analytical method for the bridge abutments on pile foundation was established in this study By use of the analytical method for an example, several factors which influence affect the stability of bridge abutment were investigated. Finally, for the bridge abutment subjected to lateral deflections damage, the fixity condition of pile head was investigated.

  • Behaviors of instrumented steel sheet piles which are installed in sand ground by vibratory hammer were investigated. Especially, stresses acting on the pile during vibratory driving, efficiency factor which reflects differences between theoretical driving force and actually delivered acting force, justifiability of rigidity of steel sheet pile, dynamic resistance characteristics of soil and penetration characteristics of sheet pile were analysed. According to the field test results it is justifiable that steel sheet pile behaves as a rigid body during vibratory driving. And it can be seen that maximum stress acting on sheet pile section is far less than tensile strength of the material. Value of the maximum section force at sheet pile head was 72% of that estimated from theoretical equation. Magnitudes of displacement amplitudes computed from displacement-time history curve corresponding to four penetration depths were in the range of 16 $\sim$ 75% of that specified by manufacturer.

  • Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of pile should be known accurately. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanism of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For the investigation, five cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the Held test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The f-w (side shear resistance-displacement) curve of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a for millimeter displacements, and after yielding point, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, the f-w curve in the highly/completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and the resistance gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until relatively high displacement (>15 mm). The q-w (end bearing resistance-displacement) curves showed linear response at least until the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless of rock mass conditions.

  • The behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles is affected by the magnitude and number of cycles of cyclic lateral loads as well as loading method (1-way or 2-way loading). In this study, calibration chamber tests were carried out to investigate the effects of loading method of cyclic lateral loads on the behavior of piles driven into sand. Results of the chamber tests show that the permanent lateral displacement of 1-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the same direction as the first loading, whereas that of 2-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the reverse direction of the first loading. 1-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles, and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause an increase of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles. The change of ultimate lateral load capacity with loading method of cyclic lateral loads increases with increasing number of cycles. It is also observed that the 1-way cyclic loads generate greater maximum bending moment than 2-way cyclic loads for piles in cyclic loading step and generates smaller maximum bending moment for piles in the ultimate state. It can be attributed to the difference in compaction degree of the soil around the piles with loading method of cyclic lateral loads. In addition, it is founded that 1-way and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease in the maximum bending moment of piles in the ultimate state compared with that of piles subjected to only monotonic loads.

  • This paper presents the effect of pile diameter on the lateral behavior of offshore pile for wind turbine. The material parameters of the soils were estimated through SPT on the Southwestern offshore area in Korea, where the first wind farm is planned. The FDM software, FLAC3D, and LPile were adopted to derive the load-displacement curve, p-y curve, and maximum bending moment at a specified displacement. It was found that the results from softwares significantly differ and the LPile could overestimate the allowable capacity. The maximum bending moment along the pile with 2m diameter could be as large as four times the bending moment with 1m diameter. Similar trend was observed for the allowable lateral capacity.
