  • The radiation impedance of a magnetostatic surface wave excited in a microstrip line haying ferrite film and its dependence on the width of the microstrip line and the height of the ferrite film are calculated by the full-wave moment analysis. The radiation resistance calculated by the full-wave analysis closely agrees with the measured radiation resistance, while that by the magnetostatic approximation greatly differs from the measured result in the higher-frequency region.

  • In this paper, we present a microstrip-to-substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) transition and microstrip-to-hollow SIW(HSIW) transition for Ku-band satellite communication systems. For the complete utilization of the HSIW, a structure filled with air instead of a dielectric material, a microstrip-to-HSIW transition is designed, fabricated, and compared with a microstrip-to-SIW transition. A back-to-back microstrip-to-SIW transition is measured in the range 12~18 GHz; it exhibits a return loss ${\geq}20dB$ and an insertion loss of $1.5{\pm}0.2dB$. In contrast, a back-to-back microstrip-to-HSIW transition exhibits a return loss of at least 15 dB and an insertion loss of $0.55{\pm}0.2dB$ in the same frequency range.

  • Microstrip - slot line transitions are analyzed in the spectral domain. Some kinds of transitions which depend on the orientation angle between two lines and the stub types are designed and fabricated at 5GHz. It is shown that experiment results of the transition are in good agreement with those obtained from spectral domain analysis.

  • The propagation properties of various pulse signal types(square pulse, Gaussian pulse, trapezoid pulse, RF pulse) on coupled microstrip lines are investigated. Numerical integration technique which has its accuracy and is easily simulated, is used to obtain the time domain response of pulse signals. Frequency-dependent characteristics of coupled microstrip line is obtained using Jansen's approximate equation. The propagation properties of pulse signal on coupled microstrip lines is analyzed regarding to its geometric structure (relative permittivity ${varepsilon}_r$ substrate height h, strip width w of the microstrip line) and pulse width ${\tau}$ of signal pulse. The simulation results show that space between two lines is very significant parameter in pulse distortion in comparison of any other parameters. The results of this paper are compatible to the trade-off determination of relative permittivity, substrate height, strip width and pulse width of signal pulse when a design of MIC and MMIC is necessary.

  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the microstrip square open loop dual split ring resonator is presented for reducing the phase noise. The square-shaped dual split ring resonator having the form of the microstrip square open loop is investigated to reduce the phase noise. Compared with the microstrip square open loop resonator and the microstrip square open loop split ring resonator as well as the conventional microstrip line resonator, the microstrip square dual split ring resonator has the larger coupling coefficient value, which makes a higher Q value, and has reduced the phase noise of VCO. The VCO with 1.7V power supply has the phase noise of -123.2~-122.0 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, 11.74~11.75 GHz. The figure of merit (FOM) of this VCO is-214.8~-221.7 dBc/Hz dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the same tuning range. Compared with VCO using the conventional microstrip line resonator, VCO using microstrip square open loop resonator, the phase noise of VCO using the proposed resonator has been improved in 26 dB, 10 dB, respectively.

  • This study is concerned with a feeding method of microstrip patch antennas with different widths as feeding elements in order to obtain the appropriate radiation patterns of nonuniform array antennas. We analyze a microstrip patch antenna based on the transmission line model and derive that the ratio of current is equal to that of the input impedances of array antenna elements in case that the feed-line length between elements of array antenna is equal to the integer times of $\lambda_g$. We measure the radiation patterns of the nonuniform microstrip patch array antenna with 6 and 9 elements. The patterns measured are well agreed with the theoritically calculated patterns. Thus, this result can be utilized in the implementation of a feed network in nonuniform array antennas.

  • For high frequency microstrip line modelling, a fast inductance extraction technique using an adaptive PEEC(partial element equivalent circuit) grid is proposed. The grid refinement technique is based on the current distribution depend on the excitation frequencies and the geometry of the microstrip lines. The adaptive ids are refined mainly in the area where heavy currents reside. This technique is applied to the inductance extraction of the microstrip lines. The results show fast convergence, and this adaptive technique is efficient to reduce computing time and the number of grids.

  • In this paper, we report on the waveguide-to-microstrip transition with an inline structure for the millimeter band. The waveguide-to-microstrip transition comprises a probe, an inductive line, a ${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer, and a 50-ohm microstrip line. For the transition design, we optimized the characteristic impedances and lengths of the component parts. The fabricated transition exhibits an insertion loss of 2.1 dB and an input/output return loss of below 13 dB at a millimeter band frequency of 94 GHz.
