This study is to examine the effect of freshwater influx on residence time to understand a long-term material transportation in enclosed bay. To predict the residence times of the coastal water in Masan bay, we were carried out the numerical simulations by using a EFDC model to simulate seawater circulation and particle tracking. The average residence times of Masan bay obtained from the particle release simulations under the condition to neglect a freshwater influx were estimated to be about 110 days in northern part of the bay to near Dotseom, 40 days in around Modo and 20 days in Budo to open sea. However, the average residence times under the condition consider with freshwater influx decreased about 81 days in both Region 1(northen Masan bay to near Dotseom) and Region II (Dotseom to Modo), but the Region III(Modo to Budo) and Region IV(Budo to open sea) incresed about 58 days and 17 days, respectively.

The spatio-temporal distribution of jellyfish in Masan Bay was investigated in this study using a numerical model. First, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model (POM) was constructed, taking into account residual flows, tides, temperature, salinity, and wind effects. A particle tracking model based on residual flow was then used to investigate the jellyfish present in Masan Port, referred to as the Heavy Industry and Gapo New Port in Masan. Jellyfish distribution was concentrated with maximum (2,533 individual) in the North Sea near Machang Bridge. Itcan be concluded that this concentration was due to multi-directional residual flows and topography effects. Residual flow currents are a dominant factor in understanding the aggregation of jellyfish, and this study used a numerical simulation of tide-induced residual currents, wind-driven currents and density currents in distinct cases to thoroughly address the topic. As a result, wind-driven currents (effect of the wind) was found to be superior to other components as an influence on the distribution of jellyfish near Machang Bridge and Modo in Masan Bay.

Applicability of the MIKE21 model as a real time coupled tide-surge model had been examined at the previous study. In this study, another applicability of the model as an inundation model is also examined. Prior to real cases, effect of artificial structures on the inundation is analyzed. The results show that inundation depth is not altered, while inundation area is lessened as a result of decreased inundation speed. Comparative study between the coupled model and an uncoupled storm surge model is also carried out at the Masan coastal zone, which shows the coupled model is considered to be plausible at the time to maximum inundation, while both models show similar results at the inundation area and inundation depth.
Seawater and sediment quality analysed was calculated to examinate the present environmental characteristics and pollution load was also calculated to evaluate the effect of farming area on the coastal environment. The measurements for seawater quality demonstrate the coastal environment has relatively eutrophicated with significantly decreased DO (0.2-8.5 mg/l) and elevated COD (9.6-31.2 mg/l) in summer. It was also evident that the water quality in Jindong Bay has been influenced by residues tide from Masan Bay with high metal concentration in August of 2002. Annual total pollution load (land and farm-driven) was estimated at 37,316 ton (SS) /yr: 9,809 ton/yr (26.3%) of land-driven load, 23,576 ton/yr (63.2%) of coastal sedimentation and 3,932 ton/yr (10.5%) of feces of cultural organisms. When all ark shell seedling farms are permitted species conversion to ascidian farm, the pollution load would increase by 196%, which may be another source for accelerating the eutrophication of the environment in Jindong Bay.

The concentration changes of discharged wastewater effluents due to ambient current flows and density stratifications in an outfall mixing zone have been investigated by using the outfall mixing zone analysis of Huang et al.[1996]. This analysis was applied to Masan sea outfall case and the concentration distributions of wastewater effluent discharges were simulated using three month period of current-meter data measured in the outfall site. Hourly concentration distributions of wastewater effluents were averaged for the period of 15 days which covers the flow conditions of the neap and the spring tidal currents in Masan Bay. The results show that the wastewater concentrations in the Masan outfall mixing zone were very low due to the higher dilution rates during the period of strong ambient currents and less density stratifications. The higher concentrations in the mixing zone were found in August because of strong density stratifications with low ambient currents. The mixing zone was extended to the west coast beach area because of major tidal current directions. This result can be used to explain the dynamical reasons for the depositional distribution of the contaminated sediments in Masan sea outfall area.

To illustrate the characteristics of marine environment in coastal waters of stationary fisheries, field observations were carried out in August and November, 2001. Water temperatures in Jindong Bay compared with those in Masan Bay were about $2.0^{\circ}C$ higher in August and about $0.7^{\circ}C$ in November. Salinities were lowest in the western part of Jindong Bay. It was found that salinity increased gradually from the western part of Jindong Bay to Masan Bay. Sea water in Masan Bay can be characterised as lower temperature and higher salinity, compared with those in Jindong Bay. Concentrations of suspended solids in the inner parts of Jindong Bay were higher than 15mg/L in August. Suspended solids in both regions of Jindong Bay and Masan Bay showed contrastive distributions, especially in November. That is, higher concentrations of suspended solids were found in the inner parts of Jindong Bay and off Masan Bay. Concentration of chemical oxygen demand in Masan Bay was highest, 7mg/L.
Distribution of soft-bottom macrobenthos en Masan Bay was studied in terms of seasonal changes in species composition, abundance, and diversity from August, 1980 to May, 1981. Of the 65 species ot benthic macrofauna observed, polychaete was the most dominant taxonomic group with 34 species, which accounted for 72% of the total number of benthic animals. Species richness and numerical abundance seemed to decrease from the outer Bay stations to the innermost bay station, where certain zoological groups such as crustaceans and echinoderms were eliminated. Based on the ecological indices calculated, the inner basins of the Masan Bay apparently receive high input levels of organic material derived from land drainage, domestic wastes, and industrial complex installed in Masan city and nearby urban area. Particularly, at two inner bay stations of the Masan Bay, these levels seemed to approach the limit of the degradative capacity of the muddy bottom ecosystem, and have significantly affected the characteristics and distfibution of the benthic macrofauna.

Accurate analysis of water budget and seawater exchange characteristics is essential for the improvement and management of the degraded water quality in Masan Bay. In this study, water budget is simulated for the four divided coastal zones on the monthly base, and watershed runoff discharges which are important as input parameters are estimated using the runoff coefficient(=0.7). The main results are as follows : The runoff-contribution rate due to water supply discharge is increased from 10% in 1978 to the equivalent amount at present. The reduction quantity due to the wastewater interception is about 25% of total inflow discharges, and the net effects of both precipitation and evaporation is about 10%. As the hydraulic detention time in Masan Bay is estimated about 3 months, water exchange rate is to be very low. From the analysis of the salinity variation on account of water mixing, it appears no temporal correlation between monthly average precipitation and salinity, whereas only regional correlation is apparent.

This study focuses on the relationship between pollution factors around Masan, Changwon and Chinhae city considerd as main pollution sources and marine environment in Masan bay of Korea. Water quality data measured In Jinhae bay and environmental investigation data in Masan, Changwon and Jinhae cities from 1981 to 1998 were used for this study. Annual means and standard deviations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations from 1981 to 1998 showed that both their concentration and fluctuations were higher in the inner part of Masan bay (region A) than near Somodo (region B). Sediment dredging in Masan bay had been done from 1990 to 1994. After dredging, COD concentration has been decreasing In surface layer. Also water pollution was gradually spreaded from the inner part to the outer part of the bay due to the continuous inflow of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. In the late of 1990s, the pollution was heavier. DIN and DIP concentrations were found to be increased by establishment of industry complex and decreased by sewage treatment plant near the city adjacent to Jinhae bay, 1993. The correlation between COD, DIN and DIP changes and neighbor cities' pollution sources were calculated From 1981 to 1998, correlation coefficient (r) was over 0.8 except for the bottom of region A From 1981 to 1998, r between the DIP concentration and population was over 0.65 except for the surface of region A, and the r between the DIP and the number of factories was over 0.6 too, in region B.
