Effective Equivalent Finite Element Model for Impact Limiter of Nuclear Spent Fuel Shipping Cask made of Sandwich Composites Panels (사용후 핵연료 수송용기 샌드위치 복합재 충격완충체의 유효등가 유한요소 모델 제시)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest the effective equivalent finite element model for the impact limiter of a nuclear spent fuel shipping cask made of sandwich composite panels. The sandwich composite panels were composed of a metallic facesheet and a core material made of urethane foam, balsa wood and red wood, respectively. The effective equivalent finite element model for the impact limiter was proposed by comparing the results of low-velocity impact test of sandwich panels. An explicit finite element analysis based on LS-DYNA 3D was done in this study. The results showed that the solid elements were recommended to model the facesheet and core of sandwich panels for impact limiter compared to combination modeling method, in which the layered shell element for facesheet and solid element for core material are used. In particular, the solid element for balsa and red wood core materials should be modeled by the element elimination approach.

Formulation on the Empirical Equation of the Cask Impact Forces by Dimensional Analysis (차원해석을 이용한 사용후 핵연료 수송용기의 충격력 실험식 공식화)

  • Radioactive material is used in the various fields. The numbers of transport for radioactive material have been gradually increased in both domestic and International regions. The safety of the cask should be secured to safely transport of radioactive material. The korean atomic law and the IAEA safety standards prescribe regulations lot the safe transport of radioactive material The cask for spent fuel is comprised of the body and the impact limiter. In this study, the empirical equation of the cask impact force is proposed based on the dimensional analysis. Using this empirical equation the characteristics of the impact limiter are analyzed. The results are also validated by comparing with the previous results of the impact area method and the finite element analysis. The present method can be used to predict the impact force of the cask.

An Optimization Method for Hologram Generation on Multiple GPU-based Parallel Processing (다중 GPU기반 홀로그램 생성을 위한 병렬처리 성능 최적화 기법)

  • Since the computational complexity for hologram generation increases exponentially with respect to the size of the point cloud, parallel processing using CUDA and/or OpenCL library based on multiple GPUs has recently become popular. The CUDA kernel for parallelization needs to consist of threads, blocks, and grids properly in accordance with the number of cores and the memory size in the GPU. In addition, in case of multiple GPU environments, the distribution in grid-by-grid, in block-by-block, or in thread-by-thread is needed according to the number of GPUs. In order to evaluate the performance of CGH generation, we compared the computational speed in CPU, in single GPU, and in multi-GPU environments by gradually increasing the number of points in a point cloud from 10 to 1,000,000. We also present a memory structure design and a calculation method required in the CUDA-based parallel processing to accelerate the CGH (Computer Generated Hologram) generation operation in multiple GPU environments.

  • By understanding physiological characters of plants and the environment, plant design should decide the relationship with other plants from the designer's curiosity of the plant's color, texture, form and other aspects. There are a traditional tendency that many designers put the plant's color ahead of other aspects. This study explores 4 gardens of Gertrude Jekyll's Munstead Wood, Vita Sackvill-West's Sissinghurst, Christopher Lloyd's Grest Dixter and Lawrence Johnston's Hidcote Manner. The flower border of Munstead is started with light grey and blue at the edge and it gets stronger colors like red and orange as the line comes to the middle. It is noticeable that white an blue colors were used unlike before. Sissinghurst made use of purple color which was very seldom used before and Dixter added orange to magenta color that was already there, giving a strong visual effect and through juxtaposition it could realize the wanted effect. A strong red border line was created in Hidcote Manner. Above mentioned designers arranged various colors so that visitors can experience different spacial senses according to observer's direction. In the cognitive space the main color and the secondary color arranged leading to the fact that the observer recognizes it as a whole. In plant design time means seasonal performance which influences the main color arrangement like gradation or contrast. Moreover, space determines the color's zone when it comes to plant design.
