  • An experimental investigation was conducted to study the structural behavior of concrete columns confined with welded grids. The full-scale columns with different volumetric ratio, spacing and arrangement of welded reinforcement grids were tested under simulated seismic loading. The columns were subjected to constant axial compression of approximately 20% or 40% of their capacities accompanied by incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals. The results indicate that the welded reinforcement grid can be used effectively as confinement reinforcement provided that the steel used, have sufficient ductility and the welding process employed does not alter the strength and elongation characteristics of steel. The grids improved the structural performance of columns, which developed lateral drift ratios in excess of 3% with the spacing and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement similar to those required by the ACI 318-95 Building Code. Drift capacity further increased when grids with larger number of cells were used. Furthermore, the use of grids reduced congesting of reinforcement while the dimensional accuracy provided perfect support to longitudinal reinforcement.

  • Conventional confinement reinforcement for rectangular columns consist of closely spaced perimeter hoops, overlapping hoops, and crossties. One of the potential alternatives to conventional reinforcement is a welded reinforcement grid, prefabricated to required size and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the strength and deformability of reinforced concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids. The comparisons of the envelopes of experimental force-displacement hysteric relationships for columns confined by welded grids with analytically generated force-displacement curves for columns confined with conventional ties. In general, inelastic deformability beyond the peak, as indicate by the slope of the cuvers, was similar to those indicated by columns with conventional ties. The superior performance of columns with welded grids may be attributed to the improved confinement characteristics of grids associated with increased rigidity of welded ties.

  • After the collapse of the World Trade Center in september 11, 2001 and due to the frequent fire-caused damages of buildings during earthquake attacks, social concerns have been increased for the fire proof of the structural members of buildings. Recently, researches have been conducted to improve the fire resistance for building members not by the traditional ways but by utilizing the fire-resisting characteristics of reinforced concrete and structural characteristics of H-steel. In this paper, laboratory tests were conducted in room temperature to investigate the structural performance of the composite beams, which were developed to improve the fire resistance, comprising with concrete incasement between upper and lower flanges of H steel. From the experimental results, the displacement ductility factors of $6\~8$ were obtained. The difference of flexural behavior ol H steel-partial concrete incased composite beams with various composite details seems to be minor. The amount of longitudinal rebars is the most influential factor for the flexural strength of the composite beams. Therefore, if this type of composite beams are selected for designing a building located in moderate seismic lone, identical beam size could be used in several stories of the building.

  • Analysis of R/C columns requires modeling of the plastic hinge region, as well as nonlinear material characteristics. This becomes a challenging task in view of the nonlinearity of both steel and concrete. Furthermore, formation and progression of plasticity in the hinge is a difficult phenomenan to simulate, especially under reversed cyclic loading and decaying strength conditions. This research provide one analytical model employed in column analysis, including the analysis procedure for establishing inelastic force-deformation relationships. The analytical results show good correlation with experimental data. The employed procedure with the adopted analytical models can be used to compute inelastic displacements of concrete columns with welded reinforcement grids. The inelastic deformability beyond the peak was similar to those indicated by columns with conventional ties. The superior performance of columns with welded grids may be attributed to the improved confinement characteristics of grids associated with increased rigidity of welded ties.
