In a high-level waste repository, the gap fill of the engineered barrier is an important component that influences the performance of the buffer and backfill. This paper reviewed the overseas status of R&D on the gap fill used engineered barriers, through which the concept of the gap fill, manufacturing techniques, pellet-molding characteristics, and emplacement techniques were summarized. The concept of a gap fill differs for each country depending on its disposal type and concept. Bentonite has been considered a major material of a gap fill, and clay as an inert filler. Gap fill was used in the form of pellets, granules, or a pellet-granule blend. Pellets are manufactured through one of the following techniques: static compaction, roller compression, or extrusion-cutting. Among these techniques, countries have focused on developing advanced technologies of roller compression and extrusion-cutting techniques for industrial pellet production. The dry density and integrity of the pellet are sensitive to water content, constituent material, manufacturing technique, and pellet size, and are less sensitive to the pressure applied during the manufacturing. For the emplacement of the gap fill, pouring, pouring and tamping, and pouring with vibration techniques were used in the buffer gap of the vertical deposition hole; blowing through the use of shotcrete technology and auger placement and compaction techniques have been used in the gap of horizontal deposition hole and tunnel. However, these emplacement techniques are still technically at the beginning stage, and thus additional research and development are expected to be needed.
For a rigid retaining wall with rough face, the magnitude and distribution of active earth pressure on the wall are affected by the shape of failure surface and arching effect developed in the backfill as well as internal friction angle of the backfill and wall friction angle. Therefore, the practical shape of failure surface and arching effect in the backfill must be considered to acquire accurate magnitude and non-linear distribution of active earth pressure acting on the rigid retaining wall. In this study, a new formulation for calculating the active earth pressure on a rough rigid retaining wall rotating about the top is proposed considering the practical shape of non-linear failure surface and arching effects. Accuracy of the proposed equation is checked through comparisons of calculations from the proposed equations with existing model test results. The comparisons show that the proposed equations produce satisfactory results.
Arching effects in backfill materials generate a nonlinear active earth pressure distribution on a rigid retaining wall with rough face, and arching effects on the shape of the nonlinear earth pressure distribution depends on the mode of wall movement. Therefore, the practical shape of failure surface and arching effect in the backfill changed with the mode of wall movement must be considered to calculate accurate magnitude and distribution of active earth pressure on the rigid wall. In this study, a new formulation for calculating the active earth pressure on a rough rigid retaining wall rotating about the base is proposed by considering the shape of nonlinear failure surface and arching effects in the backfill. In order to avoid mathematical complexities in the calculation of active earth pressure, the imaginary failure surface composed of four linear surfaces is used instead of the nonlinear failure surface as failure surface of backfills. The comparisons between predictions from the proposed equations and existing model test results show that the proposed equations produce satisfactory predictions.
Various factors affecting the teachability of Cs-137 in cement matrix have been investigated. Factors investigated include such as pressure curing, vibration curing, pressure leaching, the effect of the clay addition, ion-exchange resin(IRN-77) addition, and $CO_2$or air injection. Leaching experiments were conducted by the method recommended by IAEA. To analyze the experimental results, pore structure analysis of cement matrices was carried out by BET method. Cement matrices may not contact directly with underground water in real repository, since the surroundings of disposed drums are filled with backfill. Thus, the effect of backfill to the teachability has been investigated. The well-known diffusion theory was utilized to predict long term leach rate and cumulative fraction leached of Cs-137 or non-radioactive species.

In this study, flowable backfill made with weathered granite soil is tested to provide basic engineering properties that can be used as design input to overcome settlement problems in road pavement due to low stiffness of backfill which is generated by porosity of the soil. For design purpose, a proper mixing ratio is developed first. Then several test methods including FF/RC, PMT and LDWT including axial compression test are adapted for checking stiffness and measuring axial strength of the material separately that can be used for design values.
In the present design concept of a high-level waste repository, the bentonite and bentonite-sand mixture are considered as the buffer and backfill material. For the Kyungju bentonite which is a candidate material, the thermal conductivities of compacted bentonite and bentonite-sand mixture were measured. A correlation has been proposed to predict the thermal conductivity of the Kyungju bentonite and the bentonite-sand mixture as a function of the dry density, the water content and the sand fraction. The proposed correlation can predict the thermal conductivity with a difference less than 10% under the experimental conditions.
This paper proposes the force equations(thrust, moment) of corrugated steel culverts through the finite element method. The conditions for maximum thrust and maximum moment are determined from the analysis of soil-structure interaction during the three construction stages, such as backfill to the crown, backfill to the soil cover, and live loads. The proposed form of thrust and moment equations are deduced from the analysis of behaviour and the application of Castigliano's second theorem for the semi-arch structure. Finally, the coefficients used in the proposed equations are determined from a large number of analysis for the various geometries and the soil-structure relative stiffness under the conditions of maximum thrust and maximum moment.
To deal with the case of a rigid retaining wall built close to a stable rock face with cohesionless backfill, analytical solution methods Proposed by Spangler- Handy and Sokolovskii are modified. The modified solution methods, taking into account different friction angles along the wall and the rock face, can estimate the developed static or dynamic horizontal earth pressures behind vertical retaining walls experiencing various types of outward wall movements. The range of application of each proposed method, which is represented by the ratio of the distance between the wall and the rock face to the height of the wall, is compared with each other and also is examined for different wall friction angles as well as soil friction angles. Further, the result predicted by the modified Spangler - Handy solution method is compared with that from the experimental model test on sand. The comparison shows in general good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation about its toe. Finally results of analytical parametric study, together with the design charts, are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall friction angles and horizontal acceleration coefficients.
This study presents an analytical method of estimating the developed horizontal active thrusts against GRS-RW( Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system adapted to the case of distanced surcharge. In addition, the design charts that could be used for preliminary design of GRS-RW system are presented. The proposed method of analysis uses two body translation mechanism as well as force polygon concept. taking into account the effect of facing's rigidity. Besides. the effect of tension cracks in c-\Phi$ soils, seismic effects and horizontal distance from the back face of wall to uniformly distributed surcharge loadings are also included. The results of horizontal active thrusts obtained from the developed method of analysis are compared with those from Jarquio's modified Boussinesq equation.
Using a 5 year(2003 to 2007) pavement condition survey data from the highway pavement management system(HPMS), the roughness of the bridge deck pavement was analyzed. Based on the result of this analysis, this study tried to identify the factors affecting the deterioration of the bridge deck pavement condition. The data from HPMS indicates that the roughness of the bridge deck pavement is worse than that of the general pavement on the roadbed. The worse roughness of the bridge deck pavement is caused by the settlement of approach slab as well as the surface distress on the bridge deck pavement. In order to improve effectively the roughness of the bridge deck pavement, a management system was established in which not only the regular automated pavement condition survey to check the distress of surface of the bridge deck pavement was adopted but an automated surface profiler to check the degree of settlement of approach slab was applied.
