  • Both in the East and the West, the most classical question in classical political philosophy was 'what is truly a human virtue and a good life?' 'Human virtue' and 'Good life', and 'good State' are thus essentially tied together. Platon And Confucianism. We began with Platon and Confucianism's definitions of human virtue & good life, and 'good State'. This Essay attempts to systematically approach to what Confucianism thinks as a human virtue and a good life in contrast with Platon. Confucius asserted that the most humane human life is a civilized life and it means to realize the value of 'benevolence as a human virtue. 'Mencius also concurred that Confucius's explication of the good life was right. Moreover, he argued that to realize this, political practice should follow. Mencius discussed about 'Four Virtues', the essential goodness of human, confirmed by 'Four Clues (四端)' to talk about the possibility of realizing the good life and a good state. On the other hand, he devised Politics of benevolence.)' as a practical tool for it. An classica eastern philosophy(platon and confucianism) consider a human beings as human relationship. Confucianism believe in reality of the human mind & it's nature. Confucian human mind & it's nature is comprised of benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom. Confucianism proposed that we have to approach to other man as benevolence.

  • A disease that manifested severe anemia of the gills occurred in the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), which was cultured for 5-6 months with a recirculation water system in the laboratory. Microscopic observations showed immature parasite in the gills and mature adults in the oral cavity. The matured parasite was 5.60-9.32 (7.42) mm in total length, with 4 pairs of clamps on the pedunculated haptor, which was separated from the body proper by a long isthmus. From the morphological observations of the larvae, it was identified as Neoheterobothirum hirame belonging to the monogenea. The average hematocrite of infected fish was 10.3 ± 2.8%, significantly lower than that of normal flounder 31.4 ± 4.2%. Histopathologically, fish infected with N. hirame exhibited reduced numbers of erythrocytes in blood vessels of the gill filament and lamellae, reduced red pulp area of the spleen, and hepatocyte atrophy. From the above results, the cause of severe anemia in olive flounder was identified as N. hirame infection. This study shows an example where the growth of pathogens can be a problem in the recirculation system due to low water exchange rate.

  • Siberian Roe deer which inhabits Jeju Island is unique native species. Most of all the roe deer infect a lot of ticks, which can affect its population directly and can act as a vector to spread vector-borne diseases. The purposes of this study were to identify the ticks and detect the piroplamsosis on the roe deer in Jeju island. We collected ticks and blood samples in 23 roe deer rescued and treated at the Jeju Wildlife Rescue Center. As a result, we identified the one species of ticks, Haemaphysalis longicornis in roe deer and detected the closely related to Theileria luwenshuni in all blood samples (100%) and 8 pooled ticks (34.8%). These results indicate that there may be a high prevalence particularly of T. luwenshuni infection in Jeju wild roe deer and H. longicornis is a major vector of these diseases. It suggested that Jeju roe deer may act as reservoirs for these zoonotic pathogens.

  • This study was carried out to know damages of the grapevine trees by the disease to the leaf spot from 2000 to 2003. The isolates collected from different varieties and locations were identified as Pseudocercospora vitis ($(L\acute{e}v)$.) Speg. based on the morphological and cultural characteristics. According to the in vitro test, the range of temperatures for the mycerial growth and the conidical germination of the fungus were from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;35^{\circ}C$ and optimum temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. There were remarkably different features between a low infection trees group and high infection trees group in terms of number of leaves per fruit branch, length and diameter of internode and leaf area.

  • A leaf anthracnose disease of pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) seedling caused by Colletotrichum coccodes was found in fields of Chungnam District for the first time in 1988. Initial symptom of the disease was spotting on leaves and stems of the seedlings. The spots became sunken and gradually increased in size and coalesced to form bigger irregular spots and blights on the leaves. In severely affected fields, many pepper seedlings were defoliated and lodged. Field survey revealed that the infection rate of anthracnose ranged form 15.3% to 92.3%. Conidia from lesions on seedlings were hyaline, aseptate, straight, cylindrical with obtuse ends, $115-25(av.\;19.\;5){\times}2.5-4.8{\mu}m(av.\;3.3{\mu}m)$ and setaes were straightly extended above the acervuli, $41.3-136.3\;{\um}m(av.\;85.0{\mu}m)$ long. The fungus produced abundant sclerotia on PDA when it was cultured under darkness. In the inoculation experiments, the fungus was found to infect pepper seedlings and fruits, and fruits of tomato and egg plant.

  • Measuring the changes of free amino acids, organic acids, free sugars, for after-ripening of the peel of hot pepper, the writer has obtained the following results; 1. Glutamine, asparagine, and glutamic acid as free amino acid of hot pepper are rich, while the total amount of free amino acids is greatly decreased through after-ripening. 2. The major organic acids of hot pepper is malic acid and citric acid, and their total amount comes to 80% of the total acid through the whole after-ripening period. Malic acid, however, is greatly decreased while citric acid is increased through after-ripening. And in the course of after-ripening the total amount of acid is decreasing, particularly with a sharp decrease in the post-cli. stage. 3. As free sugar in hot pepper, glucose is the major one, fructose, galactose and sucrose are identified, and existence of raffinose is presumed. Through after-ripening the total amount of free sugar is decreased about 25% in the post-cli. stage, and reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars also are decreased.

  • We surveyed the physiological disorders of fruit vegetables grown in the greenhouse in Kyungbuk province in 1998. Greenhouses used for cultivation were mostly single or multi-span iron pipe houses covered with polyethylene film. Single span greenhouses were used for strawberry, oriental melon and watermelon. Fifty six percent of the surveyed farms was a mono-cropping system for oriental melon and tomato. There were greenhouses used for successive cultivation for 10 years or more for strawberry and oriental melon in Koryeong and Seongju. Varieties of fruit vegetables cultivated were diverse, especially in cucumber and watermelon. In strawberry, malformed fruits were observed most frequently in March and the small fruits at late harvest period. Leaf chlorosis, stunt plants and runner outbreak were also found during the growing season. In tomato, occurrence of malformed fruits was severe from March to May, and occurrence of cracked fruits and blossom- end rot was also severe in October and November. The self topping and abnormal stem in tomato were problem in hydroponic cultures in August and November, respectively. Malformed cucumber fruits, such as curved, club shaped, irregular shaped and narrow necked, occurred at late season. Umbrella-shaped leaf in cucumber in summer were caused by calcium deficiency. Most serious disorders were fermented and malformed fruits occurring from March to May in oriental melon, and cracked fruits occurring from April to May in watermelon. At late growing stage of melons the leaf chlorosis occurred with complex symptoms of leaf disease. Growers had little knowledge on physiological disorders, and also on diagnose and measures to cure the disorders. Most growers pointed out that poor soil environment and temperature management in the greenhouse as the main causes of physiological disorders.

  • This study intends to understand Kobong's thought, especially the problem of Self-cultivation. Kobong, along with Toegye(退溪), is a major figure to understand Confucian ideas of Chosun in the 16th century. There has been a lot of research centered on Kobong's Four-beginnings(四端) and Seven-emotions(七情), but not much on the Self-cultivation of Kobong. Confucianism is basically to seek after actualization of Perfect Virtue(仁) and the way to be a sage, through the pursuit of self-discipline(修己 明明德) and social practice(安人 新民). The problems of Confucianism might be summarized as follows: interest and appreciation for the source of existence(知天/事天); harmony in relationships and practices(愛人/愛物); both of the above together. Therefore, Self-cultivation is to change the self, the subject of one's life, through the relationship between man and heaven. Kobong and Toegye had debated for about eight years(1559-1566) over the problem of human nature, especially emotion(情), and virtue and vice(善惡) fundamental position of Toegye is that the difference between Four-beginnings(四端) and Seven-emotions(七情) can be understood as emotion with qualitative distinction. By contrast, Kobong sees the relationship between Four-beginnings(四端) and Seven-emotions(七情) as that of total and partial. Discussion on the Four-beginnings(四端) and Seven-emotions(七情) is not restricted within the problem of logical analysis of concepts or theoretical validity, but come to a conclusion with the problem of Self-cultivation(修養). In this sense, Kobong tried to follow Neo-Confucian theory of human nature and self-cultivation, on the assumption of Confucian self-discipline and social practice.

  • An fungus gnat, Bradysia agrestis in the family Sciaridae was collected from Pinus spp. seedlings. This pest is a newly recorded insect from P. thunbergii, P. rigida, P. rigitaeda, and P. densiflora seedling. Brief morphological characters, damage symptom, host plants associated with the B. agrestis were recored. Significant variation in damaged of Pinus spp. seedling was attributed to differences between pine species(P. thunbergii : 15.4-20.0%, P. rigida : 23.1-48.8%, and P. rigitaeda : 13.8-67.5%, respectively) and sowing times(May : P. densiflora, 0%; P. rigida, 0%, July : P. densiflora, 20.0%; P. rigida, 49.4%, respectively).
