  • Infinite element approach has been widely used to analysis soil-structure interaction, in which the soil domain is treated as infinite domain. However, most of the developed infinite element has been formulated in the frequency domain rather than the time domain to include the frequency contents of the earthquake or vibration wave. Due to that, those approaches have a critical limitation which is restricted to the linear elastic analysis. To main objective of this research is to develop the infinite element in the time domain to cooperate the inelastic soil and structure behavior. Developed infinite element is verified with the results of finite element analysis modeled in large domain. The nonlinear analysis also conducted to demonstrate the application of developed infinite element. Hence, based on above-mentioned statements, it can be concluded that the propose approach would assist for structure-seismic design.

  • The lateral load which is applied to the pile foundation supporting the superstructure during an earthquake is divided into the inertia force of the upper structure and the kinematic force of the ground. The inertia force and the kinematic force could cause failure to the pile foundation through different complex mechanisms. So it is necessary to predict and evaluate interaction of the ground-pile-structure properly for the seismic design of the foundation. The interaction is affected by the lateral behavior of the structure, the length of the pile, the boundary conditions of the head, and the relative density of the ground. Confining pressure and ground stiffness change accordingly when the relative density changes, and it results that the coefficient of subgrade reaction varies depending on each system. Horizontal bearing behavior and capacity of the pile foundation vary depending on lateral load condition and relative density of the sandy soil. Therefore, the 1g shaking table tests were conducted to confirm the effect of the relative density of the dried sandy soil to dynamic behavior of the group pile supporting the superstructure. The result shows that, as the relative density increases, maximum acceleration of the superstructure and the pile cap increases and decreases respectively, and the slope of the p-y curve of the pile decreases.

  • Most of tall building systems are composed of above-ground structure and underground structure used for parking and stores. The underground structure may have a pronounced influence on tall building response, but its influence is still not well understood. In a widely referred report on seismic design of tall buildings, it is recommended to model the underground structure ignoring the surrounding ground and to impose input ground motion calculated considering the underground structure-soil kinematic interaction between at its base. In this study, dynamic analyses are performed on 1B and 5B basements. The motions at the base are calculated to free field responses. The motions are further compared to two procedures outlined in the report to account for the kinematic interaction. It is shown that one of the procedure fits well for the 1B model, whereas both procedures provide poor fit with 5B model analysis result.

  • Parametric studies for various site conditions by using 3d numerical model were carried out in order to estimate dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure system in dry soil deposits. Proposed model was analyzed in time domain using FLAC3D which is commercial finite difference code to properly simulate nonlinear response of soil under strong earthquake. Mohr-Coulomb criterion was adopted as soil constitutive model. Soil nonlinearity was considered by adopting the hysteretic damping model, and an interface model which can simulate separation and slip between soil and pile was adopted. Simplified continuum modeling was used as boundary condition to reduce analysis time. Also, initial shear modulus and yield depth were appropriately determined for accurate simulation of system's nonlinear behavior. Parametric study was performed by varying weight of superstructure, pile length, pile head fixity, soil relative density with proposed numerical model. From the results of parametric study, it is identified that inertial force induced by superstructure is dominant on dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure system and effect of kinematic force induced by soil movement was relatively small. Difference in dynamic behavior according to the pile length and pile head fixity was also numerically investigated.

  • Recently, as the seismic performance based design methods have been introduced, dynamic numerical analyses need to be performed to evaluate the actual performance of structures under earthquakes. The verification of the numerical modeling is the most important for the performance based design. Therefore, 2-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to simulate the seismic behavior of a pile-supported structure, to provide the proper numerical modeling and to determine of input parameters. A dynamic centrifuge test of a pile group in dry loose sand was simulated to verify the applicability of the numerical model. The numerical modeling was carefully made to reflect the actual condition of the centrifuge test including dynamic soil properties, soil-pile interaction, boundary condition, the modeling of the group pile and structure and so on. The predicted behavior of the numerical analyses successfully simulated the acceleration variation in ground, the moment and displacement of the pile, and the displacement and acceleration of the structure. Therefore, the adopted numerical modeling and the input parameters can be used to evaluate the seismic performance of pile groups.

  • In this study, the soil-structure interaction(SSI) effect on the seismic response of LNG storage tanks was investigated according to the type of foundation. For this purpose, a typical of LNG storage tank with a diameter of 71m, which is constructed on a 30m thick clay layer over bedrock was selected, and nonlinearity of the soil was taken into account by the equivalent linearization method. Four different types of foundations including shallow foundation, piled raft foundation, and pile foundations(surface and floating types) were considered. In addition, the effect of soil compaction in group piles on seismic response of the tank was investigated. The KIESSI-3D, which is a SSI analysis package in the frequency domain, was used for the SSI analysis. Stresses in the outer tank, and base shear and overturning moment in the inner tank were calculated. From the comparisons, the following conclusions could be made: (1) Conventional fixed base seismic responses of outer tank and inner tank can be much larger than those of considering the SSI effect; (2) The influence of SSI on the dynamic response of the inner tank and the outer tank depends on the foundation types; and (3) Change in the seismic response of the structure by soil compaction in the piled raft foundation is about 10% and its effect is not negligible in the seismic design of the structure.

  • Seismic response of single degree of freedom system supported by shallow foundation was analyzed by using nonlinear explicit finite difference element code. Numerical analysis results were verified with dynamic centrifuge test results of the same soil profile and structural dimensions with the numerical analysis model at a centrifugal acceleration of 20 g. Differences between the analysis and the test results induced by the boundary conditions of control points can be reduced by adding additional local damping to the natural born cyclic hysteretic damping of the soil strata. The analysis results show good agreement with the test results in terms of both time histories and response spectra. Thus, it can be concluded that the nonlinear explicit finite difference element code will be a useful technique for estimating seismic residual displacement, earthpressure etc. which are difficult to measure during laboratory tests and real earthquake.

  • Inelastic seismic analysis is necessary for the seismic design due to the nonlinear behavior of a structure-soil system, and the importance of the performance based design considering the soil-structure interaction is recognized for the reasonable seismic design. In this study, elastic and inelastic seismic response analyses of a single degree of freedom system on the soft soil layer were peformed considering the nonlinearity of the soil for the 11 weak or moderate, and 5 strong earthquakes scaled to the nominal peak acceleration of 0.075g, 0.15g, 0.2g and 0.3g. Seismic response analyses for the structure-soil system were peformed in one step applying the earthquake motions to the bedrock In the frequency domain, using a pseudo 3-D dynamic analysis software. Study results indicate that it is necessary to consider the nonlinear soil-structure interaction effects and to perform the performance based seismic design for the various soil layers rather than to follow the routine procedures specified in the seismic design codes. Nonlinearity of the soft soil excited with the weak earthquakes also affected significantly to the elastic and inelastic responses due to the nonlinear soil amplification of the earthquake motions, and it was pronounced especially for the elastic ones.
