Tweens' Information Needs and Information Practices on YouTube (초기 청소년들(Tweens)의 정보요구와 유튜브(YouTube)에서의 정보추구행태)

  • The purpose of the research is to find out both what information tweens (12~14 years old adolescents) need and how they use YouTube to satisfy with their information needs. In order to achieve the goal, the research collected the data by conducting a survey on tweens (N=130) and analyzed the data with statistical processes. The research found out some significant results: first, tweens frequently use the informaton on YouTube and search for leisure information most often. Second, tweens search for information on YouTube because of ease and convenience on learning information even though they do not trust the information on YouTube. Third, tweens regard that YouTube play the role as a significant information source and searching tool, and use information on YouTube because the information on YouTube are composed of easy-to-understand video format. On the basis of the results, the research suggests and discusses how information organization such as public or school libraries provide information services for youth groups effectively.

  • 최근 인터넷 사용의 증가와 디지털 카메라, 스캐너등의 디지털 장비의 보급으로 인터넷을 통한 디지털 이미지의 표현과 전시효과가 필요하게 되었다. 이러한 디지털 이미지들을 보다 쉽게 효율적으로 전시하고 다루기 위한 방법으로 이 시스템을 제안한다. 이 시스템은 웹에서 이미지 정보를 공급하려는 제공자가 쉽게 자신의 이미지 서비스를 제공할 수 있으며, 서버상의 이미지를 자동적으로 추출하여 이미지 뷰, 업로드, 썸네일, 슬라이드, 검색, 설명부가, 사용자별 옵션, 간단한 영상처리, 풍선말 이미지 메일 전송 둥의 다양한 기능을 서비스를 할 수 있도록 구성되어 있다. 또한 그 기능을 동영상으로 확장하여 보다 동적인 인터넷 전자앨범을 구현하였다.

  • Histogram-based methods have been used generally for retrieving an image to be searched in the video database. In this paper, we present an algorithm to retrieve an image incorporating the HVS. Comparing the performance of the previous algorithm with that of the proposed one, the new and better algorithm is proposed than the previous algorithm.

Object-Based Video Segmentation Using Spatio-temporal Entropic Thresholding and Camera Panning Compensation (시공간 엔트로피 임계법과 카메라 패닝 보상을 이용한 객체 기반 동영상 분할)

  • This paper is related to a morphological segmentation method for extracting the moving object in video sequence using global motion compensation and two-dimensional spatio-temporal entropic thresholding. First, global motion compensation is performed with camera panning vector estimated in the hierarchical pyramid structure constructed by wavelet transform. Secondly, the regions with high possibility to include the moving object between two consecutive frames are extracted block by block from the global motion compensated image using two-dimensional spatio-temporal entropic thresholding. Afterwards, the LUT classifying each block into one among changed block, uncertain block, stationary block according to the results classified by two-dimensional spatio-temporal entropic thresholding is made out. Next, by adaptively selecting the initial search layer and the search range referring to the LUT, the proposed HBMA can effectively carry out fast motion estimation and extract object-included region in the hierarchical pyramid structure. Finally, after we define the thresholded gradient image in the object-included region, and apply the morphological segmentation method to the object-included region pixel by pixel and extract the moving object included in video sequence. As shown in the results of computer simulation, the proposed method provides relatively good segmentation results for moving object and specially comes up with reasonable segmentation results in the edge areas with lower contrast.

An Efficient Bitmap Indexing Method for Multimedia Data Reflecting the Characteristics of MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors (MPEG-7 시각 정보 기술자의 특성을 반영한 효율적인 멀티미디어 데이타 비트맵 인덱싱 방법)

  • Recently, the MPEG-7 standard a multimedia content description standard is wide]y used for content based image/video retrieval systems. However, since the descriptors standardized in MPEG-7 are usually multidimensional and the problem called 'Curse of dimensionality', previously proposed indexing methods(for example, multidimensional indexing methods, dimensionality reduction methods, filtering methods, and so on) could not be used to effectively index the multimedia database represented in MPEG-7. This paper proposes an efficient multimedia data indexing mechanism reflecting the characteristics of MPEG-7 visual descriptors. In the proposed indexing mechanism, the descriptor is transformed into a histogram of some attributes. By representing the value of each bin as a binary number, the histogram itself that is a visual descriptor for the object in multimedia database could be represented as a bit string. Bit strings for all objects in multimedia database are collected to form an index file, bitmap index, in the proposed indexing mechanism. By XORing them with the descriptors for query object, the candidate solutions for similarity search could be computed easily and they are checked again with query object to precisely compute the similarity with exact metric such as Ll-norm. These indexing and searching mechanisms are efficient because the filtering process is performed by simple bit-operation and it reduces the search space dramatically. Upon experimental results with more than 100,000 real images, the proposed indexing and searching mechanisms are about IS times faster than the sequential searching with more than 90% accuracy.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a new module which can reuse XML data by modifying the property of satellite images through the client's GUI at remote site. In order to implement this functionality, we used DOM interface which increases the efficiency of accessing the document structure, and loaded the developed GUI that could resort, retrieve and manage the satellite image list as converted XML data. The system was applied to the management system of satellite images in the Research Institute of SFC at Keio University which results in the confirmation of the technical functionalities.

Subimage Detection of Window Image Using AdaBoost (AdaBoost를 이용한 윈도우 영상의 하위 영상 검출)

  • Window image is displayed through a monitor screen when we execute the application programs on the computer. This includes webpage, video player and a number of applications. The webpage delivers a variety of information by various types in comparison with other application. Unlike a natural image captured from a camera, the window image like a webpage includes diverse components such as text, logo, icon, subimage and so on. Each component delivers various types of information to users. However, the components with different characteristic need to be divided locally, because text and image are served by various type. In this paper, we divide window images into many sub blocks, and classify each divided region into background, text and subimage. The detected subimages can be applied into 2D-to-3D conversion, image retrieval, image browsing and so forth. There are many subimage classification methods. In this paper, we utilize AdaBoost for verifying that the machine learning-based algorithm can be efficient for subimage detection. In the experiment, we showed that the subimage detection ratio is 93.4 % and false alarm is 13 %.

Face Recognition System for Multimedia Application (멀티미디어 응용을 위한 얼굴 인식시스템)

  • This paper is the realization of the face recognition system for multimedia application. This system is focused on the design concerning the improvement of recognition rate and the reduction of processing time for face recognition. The non-modificated application of typical RGB color system enables the reduction of time required for color system transform. The neural network and the application of algorithm using face characteristic improves the recognition rate. After mosaicking an image, a face-color block has been selected through the color analysis of mosaic block. The characteristic of the face removes the mis-checked face-color candidate block. Finally, from the face color block, four special values are obtained. These values are processed to the neural network using the back propagation algorithm. The output values are the touchstone to decide the genuineness of face field. The realized system showed 90% of face recognition rate with less than 0.1 second of processing time. This result can be understood as sufficient processing time and recognition rate to find out the face block for multimedia application in dynamic image.

  • In this paper, we suggest an algorithm that allows us to extract the important obbject from motion pictures and then replace the background with arbitrary images. The suggested technique can be used not only for protecting privacy and reducing the size of data to be transferred by removing the background of each frame, but also for replacing the background with user-selected image in video communication systems including mobile phones. Because of the relatively large size of image data, digital image processing usually takes much of the resources like memory and CPU. This can cause trouble especially for mobile video phones which typically have restricted resources. In our experiments, we could reduce the requirements of time and memory for processing the images by restricting the search area to the vicinity of major object's contour found in the previous frame based on the fact that the movement of major object is not wide or rapid in general. Specifically, we detected edges and used the edge image of the initial frame to locate candidate-object areas. Then, on the located areas, we computed the difference image between adjacent frames and used it to determine and trace the major object that might be moving. And then we computed the contour of the major object and used it to separate major object from the background. We could successfully separate major object from the background and replate the background with arbitrary images.

Semantic Scenes Classification of Sports News Video for Sports Genre Analysis (스포츠 장르 분석을 위한 스포츠 뉴스 비디오의 의미적 장면 분류)

  • Anchor-person scene detection is of significance for video shot semantic parsing and indexing clues extraction in content-based news video indexing and retrieval system. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm extracting anchor ranges that exist in sports news video for unit structuring of sports news. To detect anchor person scenes, first, anchor person candidate scene is decided by DCT coefficients and motion vector information in the MPEG4 compressed video. Then, from the candidate anchor scenes, image processing method is utilized to classify the news video into anchor-person scenes and non-anchor(sports) scenes. The proposed scheme achieves a mean precision and recall of 98% in the anchor-person scenes detection experiment.
