The effects of processing conditions on the ${\alpha}$-amylase activity of radish were investigated at various temperatures, pHs and drying conditions. The ${\alpha}$-amylase activity of radish root was 3.1-fold higher than that of radish trunk. As the freeze-dried radish was incubated at various temperatures and pHs, ${\alpha}$-amylase activity was stably maintained at pH range of $4{\sim}7$ and temperature of $25{\sim}40^{\circ}C$. When radish was processed to kakdugi and danmooji, the residual ${\alpha}$-amylase activity was 45.39% and 19.19%, respectively. Consequently, the ${\alpha}$-amylase activity was greatly affected by processing conditions such as heat treatment and pH. It is suggested that radish should be processed at below $60^{\circ}C$ and at neutral to acidic pH condition.

Sheaths are arranged in the web and lower part of prestressed-concrete girder bridges, and prestressing wires and concrete are indirectly bonded together by filling interior parts of the sheaths. However, when the filling is not sufficient, water can penetrate the interior parts of the sheaths and, thereby, prestressing wires can be corroded or transverse cracks would occur around sheaths by the freezing and thawing action of the penetrated water. Therefore, it is an important element in maintenance management of structures to find out the sheaths unfilled with grout early after construction. In this paper, in order not to damage bridge members, the impact-echo method with a new approach in application is used to probe sheaths unfilled with grout for real structures. The location of sheaths is first estimated with reinforcing bar probing instrument of radar type and the measurement locations of sheaths are determined. By sending elastic wave to the side of girders and receiving the response, the location of the unfilled part of a sheath was estimated from the difference between high frequency peak and twice the resonance frequency indicating thickness. To verify the location of void estimated by the impact-echo method, pictures were taken by an industrial fiber scope after drilling a hole.
This study was performed to investigate the inhibitory effect of the water-extract from fermented compositions containing Inonotus obliquus with added Houttuynia cordata on the growth of either human AGS gastric and HCT-15 colon cancer cells or NIH3T3 normal mouse fibroblast cells. Cytotoxic activity on cancer cells was investigated by viable cell count, MTT assay and morphological observation. Mixtures of Inonotus obliquus with added Houttuynia cordata were fermented at $30{\sim}37^{\circ}C$, $50{\sim}60%$ humidity for 30 days, extracted with water, freeze dried, powered, and then dissolved in water for the experiment. In MTT assay, the fermented compositions exhibited inhibitory effects of 13, 25, 40, 67 and 78% for AGS and 22, 40, 50, 69 and 76% for HCT-15 at 0.16, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 and 4.0 mg/ml, respectively. However, normal NIH3T3 cells were exhibited 86% survival under the same experimental condition. Fermented compositions showed highly inhibitory effect against human cancer cell line HCT-15 and AGS, but not on normal cell line NIH3T3.

This research was carried out to classify erosion shapes and sea-cliff erosion rates were estimated through periodic field survey in Dundu-ri, Anmyeondo. Based on the results of field measurements using the datum-point, the annual sea-cliff erosion rate was estimated about 25~102cm/yr by point. The erosion rate gradually increases from spring to summer, but tends to decrease slightly in autumn. Specifically, the erosion rate between June and July indicated a rather decreasing trend, but showed a sharp increase between July and September. This was attributed to erosion that proceeds more rapidly than during other periods due to severe rainstorms in summer that had a direct impact on the study area as well as storm surges caused by hurricanes. Afterwards, the sea-cliff erosion rate gradually decreased in autumn, but reflected an increasing trend again from December to January. This was attributed to the mechanical weathering that actively progresses as bed rocks on the sea-cliff undergo repeated freezing and thawing in winter. The seacliff in Dundu-ri is divided into three types according to the erosion shape. First, Type A is observed in the sea-cliff composed of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Second, Type B is found in the sea-cliff with a relatively gentler slope compared to Type A, since weathering material including soil is formed on the surface of the sea-cliff consisting of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Lastly, Type C is observed in the sea-cliff where hard rock stratum is mixed with soft rock stratum. In this case, the soft rock stratum slumps and erodes first by precipitation and wave energy, followed by additional slumping of the exposed hard rock stratum.
This study investigated the impact of cellulase treatment on the extraction yield of potato starch (PS), and compared the physicochemical properties of PS by conventional (CSE) and enzymatic (ESE) starch extraction. In ESE, the PS extraction yield was predominantly influenced by reaction temperature, time and their interaction, compared to the cellulase concentration. When potatoes were treated for 8 h at $40^{\circ}C$ with 1.5% cellulase, the PS extraction yield was about 3.4-fold higher than that by CSE. Compared to CSE-PS, ESE-PS showed lower total starch contents and higher amylose contents, resulting in lower swelling factors and distorted pasting viscosity profiles accompanied by absence of peak and breakdown viscosities. However, ESE did not affect the gelatinization characteristics of PS. Overall results suggested that ESE can provide the highest yield of PS, and ESE-PS can be a potential starch source for extending the utilization of PS in food industries.

Porous asphalt pavement (PAP) has many functions, such as reducing accidents and decreasing noise. On the other hand, vulnerability is inevitable because PAP contains approximately 20% porosity. This study evaluated the effects of the maximum aggregate size (MAS), temperature, and porosity on the PAP durability. The indirect tensile strength measures durability. This study tested the samples that stayed dry and were moisturized by freezing and thawing for mixtures having the same porosity of 20% and MAS of 13mm, 10mm, and 8mm. The same test was performed on a mixture of 20% and 22% voids made of the same material with a MAS of 10mm. As a result, for 20% porosity, significant differences in the changes in MAS and temperature were found. A clear difference was observed between 8mm and 13mm under dry conditions, but there were no other significant differences in the MAS change. Furthermore, there was a clear difference in temperature for the change in porosity and temperature, but the gap in 2% porosity at 20% did not show a clear difference. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a more durable PAP through quantitative evaluations of the factors affecting the PAP durability.
The cryosuction (negative pore pressure) in freezing soils causes groundwater migration from the frozen fringe to freezing front for ice lens formation. Frost heave and heaving pressure by ice lens cause damage to ground infrastructure. In order to prevent damage by the frost heave, various frost susceptibility criteria have been proposed. The SP (Segregation Potential) is the most widely used classification criterion for frost susceptibility in cold regions. The expansion of the ice lens by the migration of the groundwater is a key role in frost heave mechanism, and thus it is necessary to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity. In this paper, soil mixtures of coarse-fines (sand-silt) were prepared in various weight fractions and used for frost heave and column permeability test. For each case, the SP and the hydraulic conductivity were derived and correlations were analyzed. As a results, the transition threshold of the SP and the hydraulic conductivity were shown at 20% and 50% of the silt weight fraction, respectively. Although there are difference between these transition thresholds, these two coefficients show a specific correlation. In the future, additional study should be conducted for detailed analysis of the threshold transition values between SP and hydraulic conductivity.
Ten historic sites (denoted as A- J in this study) of a tomb were found during the construction of the east-west expressway in District 2 of Hyangnam, Hwaseong, which is implemented by the Gyeonggi-do headquarters of the Korea Land & Housing Corporation. Thetombswere first detected at siteH, and further investigations revealed various tombs from the Three Kingdoms period; artifacts such as gilt-bronze shoes and caps were excavated from wooden coffins in the tombs. The pottery examined in this study was the only pottery artifact excavated from the site. Its raw clay was soft and loose, reddish brown, and had quartz and feldspar particles of < 1 mm, which appeared to have been added as reinforcing agents. The firing temperature of the pottery was estimated to be under 800-870 ℃ as the mica remains and tridimite, which is the phase transition mineral of quartz, was not produced; a slight endothermic peak was also detected because of the hydration of sericite at 800 ℃. The condition of the artifact was severely weakened because of various factors, such as soil pressure from the stratum formed over the site and repeated freezing and thawing. The artifact could not be collected alone, and thus, surrounding soil that had attached to the artifact was also collected; the artifact was transported to the laboratory and conservation treatment was conducted in a safe and systematic manner.

Growing environmental concerns regarding pollution caused by conventional plastics have increased interest in biodegradable polymers as alternative materials. The purpose of this study is to develop a 100% biodegradable nanocomposite material by introducing organic nucleating agents into the biodegradable and thermoplastic resin, poly(lactic acid), to improve its properties. Accordingly, cellulose nanofibers, an eco-friendly material, were adopted as a substitute for inorganic nucleating agents. To achieve a uniform dispersion of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) within PLA, the aqueous solution of nanofibers was lyophilized to maintain their fibrous shape. Then, they were subjected to primary mixing using a twin-screw extruder. Test specimens with double mixing were then produced by injection molding. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to confirm the reinforced physical properties, and it was found that the addition of 1 wt% CNFs acted as a reinforcing material and nucleating agent, reducing the cold crystallization temperature by approximately 14℃ and increasing the degree of crystallization. This study provides an environmentally friendly alternative for developing plastic materials with enhanced properties, which can contribute to a sustainable future without consuming inorganic nucleating agents. It serves as a basis for developing 100% biodegradable green nanocomposites.
Antioxidative and antimicrobial activities were carried out on the Citrus Unshju peel solvent extracts in order to discover new functional activities. The amounts of polyphenol in 70% metanol extract (MtEx) was measured as 836.8 mg% in Citrus Unshju peel. The EDA (electron donating ability) of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.1% MtEx in Citrus Unshju peel were measured as levels of 81.3, 86.0 and 89.6%. The nitrite scavenging effects of Citrus peel were also determined as the levels of 34.4% (pH 1.2) and 19.5% (pH 7.0). The pH of react solution was more acidic, the nitrite scavenging effect was more increased. The order of antioxidatives was shown as TBHQ > BHT > TOC > ChEx > EaEx > EtEx > WaEx > Control in corn germ oil and TBHQ > ChEx > EaEx > BHT > EtEx > WaEx > TOC > Control in canola oil. A number of the extracts were certified to have antimicrobial activities for a small number of micro-organisms, similar gram negative and positive micro-organisms. According to the results above, it was summerized that Citrus Unshju peel had the higher total polyphenol, EDA, nitrite scavenging effects and antimicrobial activities. Also isolated extract from ChEx and EaEx had high antioxidative, these effects were very similar to that of ${alpha}$-tocopherol and BHT. It would be proposed that Citrus peel can become a new natural source for antioxidative agents in future food industry.
