  • The purpose of this study is to identify the differences of stress according to general characteristics and find stress related factors to reduce stress level of family caregivers for demented elderly. Subjects were 72 family caregivers for demented elderly in Seoul and Gyunggi province. Stress were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and multiple regression according to gender, age, residence, marital status, number of family members, number of children, religion, education level, occupation, monthly income, relation with the demented elderly, caring years of the demented elderly and symptom of family caregivers for demented elderly. The results were as follows. First, the stress of family caregivers for demented elderly were significantly high in number of family members who live alone with demented elderly, education level with elementary school or below, monthly income with below 2,000,000 won, and the ones who have symptom by taking care of demented elderly. Second, stress related factors of family caregivers for the demented elderly were women, age between 60-69, number of family members that live alone with demented elderly, education level with elementary school or below, monthly income with between 1,000,000 - below 2,990,000 won, daughter-in-law and son of demented elderly. The family who live alone with demented elderly, family with low education level and low monthly income were important variables of family caregivers' stress for the demented elderly. Therefore it is assumed that support for family who living alone with demented elderly, family with low education level and low monthly income can reduce the stress of family caregivers for the demented elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing file-up family stress in the caregivers of patients with dementia. Data was collected by questionnaires from 102 families with a member having a dementia, at neurology departments of hospitals, temporary shelter for dementia patient, and nursing homes for the elderly. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. In results, the score of file-up stress showed a significantly negative correlation with the score of level of family hardiness(r=-.200, p=.026), social support(r=-.361, p=.004), relative and friend support(r=-.416, p=.001), and F-COPES(r=-.345, p=.048). The multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of file-up family stress was family cost for patients with dementia. The results contribute to the understanding of Korean family caregivers' perceptions of caregiveing. Further researches should be conducted with the consideration of Korean traditional custom that family should take care of the elderly family members.

  • This study examines whether formal home care has led to a reduction in family member's allocation of time to care of elderly and changing the allocation of other time: informal care, market work, leisure, etc. Long-term care for the elderly is not the entire burden of elderly families anymore due to the increasing of the formal home care service for elderly since mid-2000's. This study uses triple difference(DDD) methods for evaluating policy reforms when reforms are equally and nation-wide accessible and analyzes data from the 2004 and 2009 Time Use Survey Data of the National Statistical Office in Korea. The treatment group is composed of the families of the elderly who need care and low- and middle- income family. Controlling for demographic characters, the three-way interaction term has statically significant and negative impact on care time of family members in treatment group statistically significant. The results reveal that the policy changes in elderly home care service affect time allocation of family members with old adults, which decreases caregiving time in a daily life. This result becomes apparent when we limit the case of women. But the level of reduction is not enough to change other kinds of time-informal care, market work, leisure, etc. The results indicate that formal home care for the elderly can reduce the burden of caregiving in families, but only minimally.

Window SPSS-PC was used for the data analysis and the statistical method used were the t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Result : The mean score of family support(3.24) was higher than nurse's support(3.03). The mean score of stress was 3.52 and that of health status was 2.98. The mean score of quality of life was 2.34. The health status of caregivers of cancer patient was influence by age(F=3.17, p=0.018) and education(F=3.59, p=0.032). There was a correlation between nurse's support and family support(r=.263, p<0.05). There was a correlation between stress and health status(r=0.597, p<0.01). • To investigate the reliability, validity of posttraumatic growth among Korean cancer caregiver, 295 participants were asked to complete a Korean posttraumatic growth inventory, translated from the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI; J Trauma Stress 1996; 9: 455.471), together with the Caregiver burden scale, life style interruption scale, economic burden scale and positive adaptation scale, social support scale and questions about religious and demographic factors. Cronbach's alpha was 0.95 for the K-PTGI, indicating sufficient internal consistencies. Construct and Criterion validity were also supported. K-PTGI appeared to be a sound measure for the experience of posttraumatic growth in cancer caregivers and this study result will be able to contribute to facilitate future research.

  • Although not many older Korean parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities have been reported depression due to care-giving related stresses, little is known about how they could be protected from this. This study examines whether satisfaction with family relationships moderate the relationships between time demands, caregiving stress, and depression of older parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities. The analyses were conducted based on data from the Korean National Survey on Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their Families of 2011, and only a total of 276 parents, aged over 60 were examined. Multiple regression analysis shows that older parents with higher level of satisfaction with family relationships were less likely to be influenced by time demands of care-giving. This indicates that satisfaction with family relationships could buffer the relationships between time demands of care-giving, and depression. This finding suggests that satisfaction with family relationships is a protective factor, buffering the negative effects of time demands of care-giving and depression. This supports 'socio-emotional selectivity theory' which family relationships are important to older people. Therefore, it is highly recommended to develop practical intervention that can improve the level of satisfaction of family relationship of the older parents, and to make policy and institutional supplementation.
