This study was designed to predict the risk of a hazard chemical, vinyl chloride, by applying dose-response assessment that are one of the major process in practicing risk assessment. After extrapolating from the high dose exposure of vinyl chloride based upon animal carcinogenic data to the low dose exposed to human using several mathematical models, we calculated the cancer potency factors as well as virtually safe dose and the resulted values were compared. This process will provide the new insight to assess the risk of a chemical accurately imposed to human in the future.
Toxicological safety on 20 kGy-gamma irradiated Kanjang (soy sauce), Doenjang (soybean paste), Kochujang (hot pepper paste) and Chunghukjang (soy paste) was determined by SOS Chromotest. As the strain of the SOS Chromotest, Escherichia coli PQ37 was used in the condition of presence or absence of an exogenous metabolizing system (S-9 mix). Water extract or organic solvent extract was prepared from samples, concentrated and tested by SOS Chromotest with S-9 mix or not. All irradiated samples were not different from non-irradiated one in the bacterial assay maintaining the below 1.5 of IF(induction factor) values in the adapted dose of 10,000$\mu\textrm{g}$/assay. The results indicated that any mutagenicity was not observed in 20 kGy-irradiated traditional soybean fermented foods.
Various materials including sodium alginate, k-carragreenan, collagen and polyacrylamide were studied in order to maintain stability of bioluminescence of P. phosphoreum for the purpose of continuos monitoring of toxic subtances. Collagen and polycryamide were shown to be inadequate for immobilization of p. phosphoreum since the bioluminescence decreased when cells were mixed with such materials. In case of k-carrageenan, the bioluminescence was stable when compared with collagen and polyacryamide. However, the k-carrageenan was not suitable for immobilization of p. phosphoreum as cells could not be mixed with the material properly in temperature at which gel formation already occurred. P . phosphoreum must be treated at low temperature below that of gel formation since these are psychrophilic luminescent bacterial. When cells were immobilized on sodium alginate, the bioluminescence was stably maintained for 20 minutes.
Loess-sulfur complex has been widely used as an environmental friendly organic materials for insecticides and fungicides in crop cultivation. However, there are high concerns about skin and eye irritation for farm workers due to the high alkaline properties of loess-sulfur complex. The acute toxicity evaluation was conducted with three samples of loess-sulfur complex in different pH (pH 9, 10, 11) in order to supply the evidentiary data for selecting the optimal product among the test materials. The results of acute oral toxicity using rats showed $LD_{50}$ of over 2,000 mg/kg b.w. for all three samples of loess-sulfur complex. The calculated acute dermal $LD_{50}$ of all tested materials was over 4,000 mg/kg b.w.. The Skin and eye irritation indicated that all tested materials have no irritation. Consequently, it was suggested that loess-sulfur complex be low in acute toxicity at all different pH values (pH 9~11).
Manganese (Mn) exists in various oxidation states and Mn(II) is the most mobile species of Mn, which is toxic to plants and limits their growth. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to reduce Mn toxicity by immobilizing Mn using various adsorbents including iron oxides and calcium compounds. Ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, goethite were synthesized, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Hematite was purchased and used as Mn adsorbent. Calcium compounds such as CaNO3, CaSO4, and CaCO3 were used to increase pH and oxidize Mn. For Mn adsorption, Mn(II) solution was reacted with four iron oxides, CaNO3, CaSO4, and CaCO3 for 24 hours, filtered, and the remaining Mn concentrations in the solution were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The adsorption rate and adsorption isotherm were calculated. Among iron oxides, the adsorption rate was highest for hematite followed by ferrihyrite, but goethite and schwertmannite did not adsorb Mn. In the case of calcium compounds, the adsorption rate was high in the order of CaCO3>CaNO3>CaSO4. In conclusion, treatment of CaCO3 was the most effective in reducing Mn toxicity by increasing pH.

Aquatic contamination by organic pollutants has been a suspected reason for rapid decrease of amphibian populations whose embryonic and larval stages are in an aquatic environment. Amphibian embryos can be a useful model to study the ecoctoxicologial impacts of aquatic pollutants. The obtained toxicological data are useful references for the management of aquatic pollutants in public health because amphibia share many developmental events with terrestrial vertebrates including humans. Safety guidelines for the toxicological effects of aquatic contaminants of chemicals identified as hazardous should be addressed at multiple endpoints. Alkylphenols have been widely-used in agricultural, industrial, and household activities; they contaminate and can persist in aquatic environments. Exposure to alkylphenols results in endocrine disruption in aquatic animals. In this review, we summarize the developmental toxicities of alkylphenols in amphibian embryos and larva according to the exposure route, chemical concentration, duration of exposure, and affected developmental stage together with mechanisms of toxicity and typical patterns of developmental abnormality. The merits of amphibian embryos as a toxicity test model for mid- to long-term exposure to aquatic pollutants are discussed proposed.

Smilax sieboldii is one of the Smilax species. A number of Smilax plants have long been used in traditional medicine in the tropics and subtropics worldwide. Repeated dose oral toxicity test is an essential experiment for toxicity evaluation before efficacy evaluation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate toxicity and the no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) using oral administration of Smilax sieboldii extract (SSE) in male and female ICR mice for 4 weeks. SSE was orally administered daily for 4 weeks at a dose of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg/day (MPK). There were no significant differences in mortalities, clinical signs, body weight changes, food intake, hematological analysis, serum clinical chemistry test and relative organ weights in all animals administrated with SSE. The results obtained in this study suggest that SSE did not show any toxic effect in ICR mice and the NOAEL of SSE was regarded as over 2000 MPK.

To develop an antibacterial tempered glass for applications to various building facilities and household products, the antibacterial activity of domestic materials was investigated, and a tempered glass sample was produced with silver, copper, and zinc, having an antibacterial activity of 99% or more at a specific concentration. The measured antibacterial activity of the samples, in which silver, copper, and zinc were dispersed in ethylene glycol + glycerol, was more than 99%. Measurements of the thickness of the coated metal material by washing using a surface analyzer showed that the thickness decreased by less than 1% in various types of detergents, including water, but only approximately 10% in the alkaline detergents. To check the human safety of the samples, a cytotoxicity test was performed through an MTT assay; the samples showed no cytotoxicity. Finally, a Live/Dead kit or film adhesion method showed that the antibacterial activity of the prototype was more than 99%. Therefore, the high-functional antibacterial effect of tempered glass was developed using domestic materials and may be used in various products in the future.

Toxicity and fate assessment is necessary in the evaluation of the environmental, health and safety risks of engineered nanomaaterials (ENMs). Therefore, in order to ensure the reproducibility, reliability and relevance of ENMs toxicity results, stable and monomodal dispersion protocols in toxicity test media are needed. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) are widely used in various products such as cosmetic products, paper, paints etc. In this study, nZnO dispersions in ecotoxicity test media were produced by following a series of steps of modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special publication 1200-5. In addition, natural organic matter (humic acid (HA)) was used as a stabilizing agent to disperse nZnO in the test media. The hydrodynamic diameters (HDD) of the nZnO in dispersion ranged between 150 and 200 nm according to the dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement. Based on these dispersions in ecotoxicity test using ecological species (Oryzias latipes, Daphnia magna, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Chironomusus riparius), dispersion protocol was found to have a considerable potential in ecotoxicity test of ENMs.
In this study, TI(Toxic Index) of Daphnia toximeter corresponded to ecological toxicity standard 1 TU(Toxic Unit) was set up using Daphnia toximeter and when operating NOEC(water quality standards for drinking water) and $EC_{50}$ Daphnia toximeter alarm was issued appropriately, which enables real time ecological toxicity evaluation. I studied to get a good shot and the research was conducted by investigating domestic and international related data and conducting a preliminary study. 6 of 59 hazardous substances (As, Hg, Cr, Diazinon, Dioxane, and Phenol) recommended by the water quality monitoring items for artificial river water were selected and static, dynamic and quality management test, TI was shown to be good in other materials except Diazinon, and as a result of $EC_{50}$ spiking test, TI was matched to TU by distinguishing between 1 TU and 1 TU. in suggesting the complementary point of ecological toxicity management system and the future of research on water Daphnia toximeter.
