  • This study investigated an actual condition of students' reading through the survey from 1,285 students in Jeollabuk-do and analysed the casual relationships which affect students' reading ability. 4 variables selected in this study are students' reading ability, reading environment, reading education and reading experiences. The results are as follow: the level of students' reading experience which means the number of books they read and time they consumed for reading is very low compared to the other variables. The reading level of elementary students is revealed higher than that of middle and high school students. The relationships among variables found out through the analysis are that reading education is influenced by reading environment, reading experience is affected by reading education and eventually reading ability is mainly affected by students' reading experience. Through these findings, this study proposed that expansion of students' reading experience and systematization of reading education are needed to strengthen their reading ability effectively.

  • This study was conducted to compare and analyze trends in research on reading ability. To do this, collecting articles searched for 'reading ability', a keyword network analysis was performed based on the author's keyword. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the terms were used interchangeably in studies related to reading education at universities. In the study related to reading ability 1, the main research areas are school library, school librarian, information literacy, self-directed learning, and information service. In the study related to reading ability 2, the main research areas are children's early literacy, related reading difficulty and disability. In addition, studies on reading evaluation are being conducted in both areas, but not much activation has been performed. Studies involving adolescents show limited activity in both areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the different types of reading instruction programs and reading methods influenced the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability, They were divided into two groups. Class A was taught to use 'The Author-Reader-Inquirer Cycle'. which concentrated on the writing-centered reading program model. Class B was taught to use 'The Literature Circles'. which concentrated on the speaking and listening-centered reading program model. After reading instruction. the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability increased. The writing-centered reading instruction was more effective than the speaking and listening-centered reading instruction. The reading instruction during the long-period was more effective than that during the short-period. The 'intensive reading' among the reading methods had a significant influence on the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest reading education plan by exploring the characteristics of peer-relationship networks of elementary school students, and grasping the effects of those characteristics on the reading competencies. Social network analysis method was used, and centrality analysis, QAP correlation and QAP multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between peers and reading competencies. The findings show that the help relationship rather than peer characteristics and friend relationship was related to reading competencies. However, since the friend relationship has an effect on the help relationship, it is also found that the relationship between the friend and the help relationship network should be considered in order to improve the reading competencies. This network analysis results are meaningful in reading education plan in the sense that they suggest a useful guideline for the formation of members ranging from individuals, small groups, to a whole class, and for periodical activities considering situation and learning purposes such as before, during, and after reading activities.

  • This study was conducted with the aim of developing and implementing a communication-centered reading program based on the Big6 model to observe its effects on communication skills and the positive changes in attitudes toward reading. To achieve this, a reading program was designed and implemented for male first-year middle school students from August 25, 2023, to December 29, 2023, through a library cooperation class. The results indicated that the reading program based on the Big6 model led to significant improvements in subdomains of communication skills, such as interpretation, self-presentation, and goal-setting abilities. Additionally, there was an increase in interest in reading, and subjective responses were analyzed as being positive.

  • The purposes of this study are to analyze the effectiveness of public library reading programs for children in qualitative way and to apply the outcomes to identify areas to measure the success of library reading programs. Interviews were conducted with children who participated in '2013 Reading Books with Libraries' program and adults who were in charge of managing the program. Observations on the program were also conducted. The findings indicate that children who participated in '2013 Reading Books with Libraries' program positively changed in various aspects. Selected areas to measure the success of library reading programs include: reading behavior; attitude to books; awareness of libraries and librarians; participation of library reading programs; the ability to read aloud; the ability to comprehend stories by listening; aggression; the ability to express one's own feelings; speech ability; concentration power; and undiscovered potential. The elements that affect the success or failure of library reading programs include: librarian's enthusiasm on running the reading program; environmental condition of the community child care center; age differences between child participants; running style of the instructor's program; selection of books; child participants' reading abilities and interests in reading; available time for free voluntary reading.

  • This study was performed in order to find implications for further activating the reading discussion program by conducting a Havruta-based reading discussion program for elementary school students in the library, by measuring and analyzing the effect on the participants. The results of the study are as follows: First, as a result of comparative analysis between the pre- and post-scores on the effectiveness of the Havruta reading discussion program, it was found that the average score of the post-test was high. Second, as a result of analyzing the differences in the changes in the results of the pre-survey compared to the post-survey according to the general characteristics of the participants, it was found that there were significant differences in the characteristics of 'interest in reading' for the 'critical thinking ability' factor, the characteristics of 'average monthly reading capacity' for the 'critical thinking ability' factor, the characteristics of 'academic performance' for the 'research ability' factor, and the characteristics of 'gender', 'academic performance', and 'interest in reading' for the 'persuasive ability' factor. Third, as a result of analyzing how the effects of the Havruta reading discussion program are affected by the constituent factors of reading and discussion ability, it was found that the factors 'critical reading ability' and 'critical thinking ability' had an effect. As a result, it was identified that there are effects and advantages of the Havruta-based reading discussion program in the library.
