  • The Republic of Korea is planning to build the now Multi-functional Administrative city (NMAC). The purpose of this paper is to suggest the conceptual framework for this new city that relies on the Korean geomancy, oriental viewpoint on man and nature relationship, particularly in Korea. According to the Geomancy which could conceptualize the human-environment relationship in the site, the overall landscape image of the city could be symbolized by two flying crane with three Taegueks. In transforming the overall landscape image to urban form, two diamonds which means eternity and strength arises from the western spatial viewpoint, as means to protect and harmonize the human, land and mountain relationship in this site and the symbolic meaning of this site as generative and sacred place in Korean people's mind. On the one hand, through juxtaposing of the two diamonds a geometric structure shows up, on the other hand the main axis of the city could be established from two crane and three Taegueks. On the North-South axis from the core of the symbolic green axis, symbolic things will be located, and the administrative offices will be Placed on the East-West axis. Peripherals of the central axis also play a role in developing overall land use from image. The buildings and residents could be arranged and located according to undulations and this is based on the oriental theory of geomancy. We can build cultural amenities on the head part of the crane and on the core area.

  • A drastic development of modern cities and transportation means as part of a rapid industrialization and urbanization for the past half-century has consistently broaden the boundaries of urban dwellers while, at the same time, raising issues as to establishing relationships among them throughout the society following the materialization of modern urban planning. Within the framework of the postmodern concept, there have been consistent efforts to create a community space in appropriate size and, in particular, the concept of New Urbanism and Urban Village that emerged in mid 1800s along with the effort to build a community by building an ideal city provides an important meaning today when people are seeking to restore a healthy community. Against this backdrop, this study aims to explore the concept of community and to determine its optimal scope of implementation in the sense of healing environment under the premise that organizing a healthy city is based on building a solid urban community. The study findings and conclusions are as follows. First, a community is a subject of constant consideration in the process of historical development of the city and has required us to take a variety of strategic approaches and to determine the scope of implementation. Second, the activities of a healthy community have been conducted under various types of environments, including churches, commercial facilities, urban plazas, parks, and streets in various scales, reflecting their unique characteristics. Third, in the process of designing a healthy and sustainable city, determination of location carries significant implications along with building a community of appropriate size, which requires multidisciplinary considerations in addition to functional approaches. Fourth, the composition and design of a modern urban community need to seek practical ways of its implementation within the concept of healing environment.

  • This study discusses how transportation to connect railway stations in Korea's small and medium-sized cities can be improved, based on analysis of a survey on the Joongang Line. The analysis considered current problems in connectivity between parts of the Korean transportation system and suggests how to encourage more passengers to shift from private cars to railways. It was found that railway users in small and medium-sized cities hope for better connection between different modes of public transportation, especially for urban buses. However, there is not enough connectivity currently available; therefore it is crucial to establish a system of such connections, mainly focusing on urban buses. Furthermore, in order to minimize transfer distances and connect various transfer modes, plans for improvements of facilities are needed and governmental support should be provided.

  • Nowadays, urban townhouses are being developed in various forms according to the characteristics of different regions in consideration of the trends of the housing market. Misperceiving the needs of consumers or their characteristics as a house for living, however, they often end up becoming products that are not suitable for urban life or degraded on account of reckless regional development. It is so unfortunate that such trial and error keeps being repeated. Urban townhouses are advantageous because there is no such problem as either invasion of privacy or noise from neighbors, and it is possible to have one's own garden and enlarged parking space, obtain quality of grounding, and plan unique interior and exterior design. They are also equipped with the strengths of apartment houses as well, for example, the efficiency of joint control in crime and disaster prevention or security, architecture of diaphragm walls with the separation of gates, or the planning of common space like a central square or park. Therefore, there is a great chance that they can be developed as the types of urban housing. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to establish the basic direction of developing housing products right as space for urban life and maximize the roles of urban townhouses. By understanding their spatial as well as functional elements as a house for living, this author aims to provide a guideline for housing product development to realize urban townhouses that can meet consumer needs.

  • This study researched those universities for which fence opening and greening projects are being conducted by Seoul city. The forms of opened fences at 24 universities which have accomplished this project were classified into several types for each type of university, representative cases with many diverse facilities and active users were selected and investigated. The study was carried out using methods of field observations, literature review, and surveys. To maintain the confidentiality of the collected questionnaire analysis, the analysis of each type's usage frequency, overall satisfaction and a regression analysis with space environment and facilities, a one-way ANOVA for was used to validate the difference between types regarding satisfaction with the project. The results of usage type analysis were found to agree with the 3 analysis criteria-- installation location, user characteristics, and usage purpose--which were the legislative concepts. In overall satisfaction with facilities, it appeared that except for Seoul Women's College of Nursing with its rural district neighborhood type park, users were satisfied: with the small urban neighborhood park of Methodist Theological College, Konkuk University's small urban square park, and Sejong University's green space small city park. In general, users appeared to not have satisfaction with such features as fountains / hydroponic facilities, fitness facilities, and square facilities, which should be taken into consideration when pursuing further opening and greening projects. Regarding full satisfaction with the space environment, it was found that users were not satisfied with Seoul Women's College of Nursing's rural district neighborhood-style park, whereas they were satisfied with Methodist Theological College's small urban neighborhood park, Konkuk University's small urban square-style park, and Sejong University's green space small city park. In addition, it was shown that facilities use, convenience and privacy of the four parks were largely unsatisfactory for users, and that the small city parks located at roadsides were unsatisfactory regarding noise level, both of which should be most highly considered when conducting similar projects in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of ventilation corridor and derive adequate policy alternatives to its application for the city of Sejong, which is located in an inland of Korean Peninsula. In order to introduce the ventilation corridor in the city, it is necessary both to understand change on fresh air flow affected by the construction of new cities and to show its effects which are able to circulate air flow of the city. The study identified ventilation effects using computational fluid dynamics models. In particular, it analyzed change on wind speed and direction after constructing of a new town and cool air flow along the lowlands generated after sunset. In addition, it identified those of reducing particulate matter when arranging buildings conforming to the ventilation corridor at block level. The policy implications derived from simulation can be summarized as follows. First, it is desirable to plan ventilation corridors so that fresh air from mountains, forests, and valleys can flow into cities and mitigate the concentration of particulate matter. Furthermore, public facilities covering parks, plazas, and playgrounds should be installed preferentially to attract safe outdoor activities near to areas with low levels of particulate matter. Finally, it is adequate to prepare for a number of alternative plans by analyzing ventilation corridors when setting out district unit plan.
