  • This study aimed to propose the core values of librarians by investigating the core values of domestic and foreign libraries, including ALA's core values, and analyzing related research by domestic and foreign researchers. The research process included literature analysis, case studies, and surveys. The results showed that although the recognition of the need for setting core values for librarians was high (4.48), the awareness and understanding of core values were low. The reasons for recognizing the need for setting core values included improving the recognition and value of librarians, enhancing their professionalism, and establishing the value of libraries. The study proposed approximately 20 core values for librarians, with only two items scoring below 4 points, and 18 items showing high agreement with scores of 4 points or above. Particularly, professionalism, accessibility, diversity, service, literacy, and public interest all scored above 4.4. Analysis of perception differences between different types of libraries revealed significant differences for almost all items, with school libraries showing the most significant differences. The study recommends conducting in-depth research at the national level to reduce the number of core values to within 10 and share them with the nation.

In this study, an attempt is made to estimate the annual budget for collecting foreign knowledge information resources spent by academic and research libraries in Korea. This budget estimate could be used for a basis for setting up the appropriate collection size and the efficient channel for distributing and sharing information resources among academic and research libraries on the governmental level. The total budget for collecting foreign knowledge information resources, including foreign monographs and scholarly journals in print, and the budget for foreign electronic journals, and web databases were estimated for academic libraries and research libraries, respectively, while the budget for international document delivery services was estimated without distinction between the types of libraries.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive implications of the management evaluation results for the Korean 699 public libraries during the year of 2010. The 'collection management' area(65.8%) and 'strategic management plan' area(60.8%) showed high performance rates compared to the average rates of the entire areas(56.6%). On the other hand, the 'cooperation with other libraries' area(41.8%) and 'cooperation with other communities' area(48.5%) showed relatively low performance rates compared to the average rates of the other areas. For this purpose, we conducted a survey of the two library types, and the results are as follows. First, more than 50% of the questions public librarians were termed "immediate answer" questions, while more than 80% of the questions medical librarians receive take up to a few days' time to answer. Public librarians were more likely to comment on the limitations of their expertise and information resources as compared to the medical librarians. Second, public librarians use mainly medical journals and websites for answering users' requests. However, medical librarians used, in almost the same ratio, all types of information resources represented in the survey questions. Third, when asking about health/medical-related training contents for performing their tasks, public and medical librarians are highly interested in all information about all health-related issues. However, while medical librarians showed high interest in all subject areas, public librarians most preferred well-being related education topics such as Information on diet and nutrition, Information about exercise and fitness, and information on quitting smoking.
