  • Governments and companies are trying to reduce occupational accidents in the construction industry; however, the number of disasters are not decreasing significantly. This study aims to identify the correlation between factors affecting construction disasters quantitatively. To this end, 1,197 cases of serious disasters provided by Korea Occupational Safety and Health Administration (KOSHA) were analyzed using affinity analysis, one of the data mining techniques. The data from KOSHA were preprocessed and analyzed with variables of accident type, project type, activity type, original cause materials, sensory temperature, time of the accident, and fall height, and the association rules were derived for fall accidents and the others. For fall accidents, 64 association rules with lift ratios of 1.38 or greater were derived, and for the other accidents, 59 association rules with lift ratios of 1.54 or greater were derived. After analyzing the derived association rules focusing on the relationship among accident factors, this study presented the significance of applying the affinity analysis to address the study's limitations. The significance of this study can be found in that the correlation among factors affecting construction accidents is presented quantitatively.

  • There have been sustained developments of advanced technologies using traffic safety facilities recently and techniques for identifying failure modes and devices which could result in fatal outcomes. The purpose of this research is aimed at improving the driving conditions in advance through analyzing the IT convergence, driving education, researches for vehicles, field of construction and robotics. The researchers evaluate on usability tests of the driving with 26 candidates through focusing on safety, convenience, efficiency, effectiveness. Using specialized LED panel to enhance driving performances of disabled people are for cautious road conditions like foggy weather or heavy rain. As a result, there were improvements in the driving conditions, and candidates reported this system was helpful. It allows them for maintaining proper driving all times and was especially informative for people with low vision or visually impaired. This system plays a pivotal role as a prevention mechanism not only for regular drivers but also for further delict of traffic violations or accident offenders who already have former record on tort.

  • Energy absorption facilities installed on roads should follow the performance standards of the real-car crash test of 'Installation and Maintenance Guidelines for Roadside Safety Facilities'. However, due to different installation conditions, such as differing structure widths on roads, some energy absorption facilities do not provide adequate performance. In order to apply varied environments on roads, an energy absorption structure was designed in this study with 150 mm height and four layers of W-shape guardrail at 200 mm intervals, and the performance was verified using LS-DYNA computer simulation. Through a real-car crash test, the performance of the facility designed by LS-DYNA was tested and was found to meet the performance of the CC2 category for crash cushions. The conclusion of the comparison demonstrates that the simulation and the real-car crash tests are both significant.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve construction cost, time, and field management when constructing a road on soft soil foundation by eliminating extra-banking of subgrade layer after completion of the consolidation process. The subgrade layer was pre-constructed before the soft ground improvement. And then it was confirmed by the field test that the compaction effect was maintained or not after consolidation settlement. As a result of the experiment, all subgrade layers were kept constant except for the top subgrade layer. So it would be advantageous to secure economical and practical in road construction if subgrade layers were constructed exclusive of the top subgrade layer.

  • On November 15, 1994 at 03:17 local time, an earthquake of surface magnitude (M$_{s}$) 7.0 occurred on the northern coast of the Mindoro in Philippine. A major tsunami was generated by this earthquake, extremely large tsunami waves engulfed the Mindoro and the Verde islands. This tsunami caused tremendous casualities and damage. The tsunami propagated to the Luzon island and felt at the Batangas after 10 minutes. The present paper intends to understand the propagation and inundation this tsunami with the aid of numerical computation model and computer graphic aided video animation.n.

  • Test constructions were performed at 3 sites to investigate ways for maximizing performance of geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements known to reduce reflection cracking and rutting. Problems during construction operation which can affect bonding shear strength of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements were defined and the construction conditions were intentionally made during the test constructions. Both immediately and 1year after the test constructions, cores were obtained from positions with good and bad construction conditions and then bonding shear strength tests were performed to be compared each other. Rules to be kept at construction sites were suggested to improve performance of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements.

  • The time and cost is the most important information for the construction project management. Currently, a lot of studies have been done in order to clearly relate them with each other, but there have been some difficulties. Because of the characteristic of Korean government contract law, the construction project in Korea is managed by only cost and the time and cost information is distinctly separated. In order to manage all the major construction project information smoothly, the time and cost information should have relation with each other. This study suggest methods for relating the time and cost information, especially for road construction project of MOCT. Through the survey of construction field engineers and case study of the road construction project, several alternatives to improve the usability of construction information are suggested in this study. These alternatives can support relating other construction information.

  • A bridge scour management system is developed to evaluate the vulnerability of bridge piers to scour and to help establish effective disaster measures, taking into account the locality and scour characteristics in Korea. This system is programmed using the techniques of the geographical information system(GIS) for the storage, retrieval, and display of information regarding to bridge scour. The system functions are basically divided into two parts; prioritization and maintenance. Bridges are initially screened and prioritized for bridge scour inspection and evaluation using the basic information which is obtained from the office review. The bridge scour evaluation including site investigation is performed and the vulnerability of bridge piers is categorized into six groups taking into account the local scour depth, foundation bearing capacity, foundation type, foundation depth, and present scour condition. The system tabulates and plots all the data and the results.
