  • This study is to perform several major analyses to find any differences in the leverage between the pre- and post-period of the currency crisis. Moreover, another aspect is to investigate a financial aspect which has received relatively little attention to the firms and/or industries in the emerging capital markets in comparison to those in the advanced markets. The purpose of this empirical study is to confirm whether or not, it is myth or reality that Korean business conglomerate, chaebol, firms with subsidized financing from government-owned domestic financial institutions in the pre-financial turmoil, may still maintain their higher leverage, even after the crisis. It was found that firms belonging to the chaebol in Korea maintained higher average book-value and market-value based debt ratios, relative to their counterparts not belonging to the chaebol across all of the tested models. There were positive relationships of IND3(=the chemical industry) and Ind5(=the construction industry) to the book-value leverage. This study identified that there were no differences in the explanatory variables included, between the tested models (that is, without and with including the present value of an operating lease) related to each debt ratio. Since the Korean government continue to improve the corporate governance of the domestic firms in terms of accounting transparency and corporate ownership, it would be more efficient, if utilizing this "new" ratio considering an operating lease as an effective measurement of the level of leverage. In terms of the capital structure, it may also be possible for foreign firms to utilize and benefit from the results obtained in this study when operating their new businesses in Korea, given the economic circumstances such as the ongoing progress of the Korea-America FTA or the Korea-China FTA.

  • Globally, there has been a lot of research related to recycling coal ash from power plant stations. This research is happening because there is a considerable shortage of sites for reclamation of increased coal ash every year. In addition, a variety of environmental pollutants have appeared because of mining activity. Abandoned coal mine, pits, and mine tailing piles caused pollutants to come to the surface resulting in serious damage for humans and the environment. Therefore in this study, we investigated whether or not coal ashes have the ability to prevent several environmental problems by mining in Korea and a manageable form recycling coal ashes. In overseas countries, there is a sufficient field of applicable cases where coal ash is used for neutralizing AMD (Acid Mine Drainage), covering of the waste materials, grouting, and soil amendments. However in Korea, since the coal ash is classified as a 'waste', there is an insufficient field applicable cases so far. Therefore it is necessary to establish a specific standard and management system for the utilization of coal ash based on the relevant precedent cases applied abroad in order to prevent environmental pollution caused by mining activity in Korea.

  • High salt content in food waste limit use as the potential source of compost. Since sodium chloride content should be lower than one percent to meet requirement for agricultural use of compost, we attempted use of three kinds of co-composting material for food wastes compost, which were fermented, dried, and fresh types of amendments which included pig manure, sawdust and puffed rice hull. Food wastes were composted well and stabilized after around the 40th days of composting. Little difference were found between composts amended sawdust and puffed rice hull. The result indicated that puffed rice hull could be used as a good alternative of sawdust. Because sawdust or puffed rice hull were mixed as amendments to control water contents and to dilute high NaCl content of compost material, the C/N ratios of the final products were significantly high over 40. However, NaCl contents of final products were dropped to less than percent on the fresh weight basis by mixing food wastes and the above amendments with the optimum rates.

  • This study was conducted to determine the location determinants that influence the sales of the "Storyway" convenience stores built at the country's railway stations. The preceding studies were about the convenience stores located in the residence-business areas or along the roadsides. This study, on the other hand, focused on the characteristics of the stations, based on a theory that is different from the existing theories. The targets of this study were the 301 "Storyway" convenience stores doing business in the 198 railway stations in the country, and the dummy parameter and hedonic-price model function were used for multiple regression analysis. For the study results, it was found that the number of people using the railway and the size of the store have a positive effect on the sales whereas the other brand competitors have a negative effect thereon. Second, the subway stations holding 89% of the total passengers in the country have unexpectedly no positive influence on the sales. Third, depending on the transfer, it was found that no transfer station had smaller sales than the transfer stations. Finally, as for the location of the stores in the station, the stores located on the platforms or passageways have a smaller turnover rate than the stores in the welcoming spaces and squares. This research result shows that when starting a convenience store business, the number of people using the railway, the size of the store, the transfer possibility, and the location of the store inside the station have to be considered under the circumstance of recession on the part of the convenience stores due to excessive competition.

  • As the economy grows, there is a concern that the economic development causes a productivity reduction because of the service intensive growth. However, the economy of developed countries encounter with the productivity growth as their economy grows, which phenomenon called Baumol's paradox. Oulton (1999, 2001) find out the reason of Baumol's paradox in a forward and backward chain effects. So, this paper is aimed at verifying the theory of Oulton (1999, 2001). Moreover, we test the difference effect between a consumer service and producer service input using a dummy variable. We use the Input-Output Table (1990, 1995, 2000, 2005) that is offered by the Bank of Korea to accomplish the purpose of our research that is represented above. We find out that the Korea's intermediate producer service inputs cause a multifactor productivity growth. That result is matched with the Oulton (1999, 2001)'s theory. But, the intermediate consumer service inputs don't have a significant effect on a multifactor productivity. The result of verifying the effect of intermediate producer service inputs among industries shows that the effects on manufacture industries are less than other industries.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of compressed expansion rice hull (CERH) as bulking agent on physicochemical properties of composting poultry manure (PM) and of its fertilization on lettuce and pak choi growth. Treatments were designed as follows; sawdust treatment (90% PM + 10% sawdust; SP), peatmoss treatment (90% PM + 10% peatmoss; PP), and CERH treatments [PCR1 (90% PM + 10% CERH 1.3 mm) and PCR2 (90% PM + 10% CERH 3.0 mm)]. Physicochemical properties such as temperature, water content, pH, and total carbon of composted poultry piles for 31 days were unaffected by various bulking agents. However, total nitrogen content in compost pile was higher in PP and PCR1 than that of SP or PCR2. After composting for 31 days, content ranges of N, P2O5, and K2O in the composting PM piles were 19.1~19.7%, 47.6~51.6%, 2.76~3.65%, and 2.53~2.90%, respectively. As compared to SP treatment, dry weight of lettuce treated with PP and PCR1 increased by more than 10%, but only in PP for pak choi. These results indicated that CERH 1.3 could be used as bulking agents for composting PM on behalf of peatmoss or sawdust.

  • Under accrual basic accounting, financial statements may be less reliable compared to cash basis accounting. The purpose of this study is to conduct an empirical analysis to determine the possibility of profit adjustment through the increase and decrease of deferred tax accounts. For our empirical analysis, a dummy variable of '1' was used as a dependent variable when the deferred tax net assets increased from the previous year and '0' when the deferred tax net assets decreased. Meanwhile, the variables of interest were discretionary accruals and ROA variation compared to the previous year. Logistic regression analysis was performed to establish the relevance between variables. Results found larger discretionary accruals related to lower net deferred tax assets compared to the previous year. In addition, there was a correlation between ROA and net deferred tax assets only if the ROA increased and net profit was greater than '0'. Study results will enable deferred tax information to be used in investment decision-making, and supervisory institutions can establish policies to prevent profit adjustments and enhance reporting standards.

  • This study, targeting KOSDAQ-listed companies, examined the relationship between variability of accruals and corporate characteristics. First, the analysis results show that executives of companies with high debt ratios are more likely to violate debt contracts, so there is a strong temptation to use discretionary accrual items. Second, for companies with large volatility in operating cash flows, Executives of these companies are strongly inclined to utilize accruals for the purpose of abuse of discretion. Third, the larger the company, the more sensitive it is to political costs, so it is less tempted to use the accruals item than a smaller company. Fourth, the corporate age is thought to be the maturity of the company, Executives of such companies have little room to use accruals to abuse their discretion. Fifth, in the case of profit dummy variables, the companies reporting losses have more temporary accrual items than those reporting profits, so this increases the uncertainty in their accounting information than the latter. Sixth, for those companies that are indicated as inappropriate as a result of audit, the more likely their executives are to use the accrual items, and the lower the quality of their accounting profits is. Lastly, Companies audited by 4 Big domestic accounting firms have less discretionary accrual fluctuations than companies audited by non-big 4 accounting firms. Thus, it was found that the accrual amount allows the discretion of corporate executives differently according to the characteristics of the company.
