  • This study attempted to provide basic data for career counseling and education programs by verifying the mediating effect of career decision-making self-efficacy on relationship between perceived social support and career preparation behavior of Korean Polytechnics students. A total of 314 students from 11 departments attending the I Campus of Korea Polytechnics II were surveyed, and the research results are as follows. First, it was found that career decision-making self-efficacy completely mediated the relationship between social support and career preparation behavior. Second, the career decision-making self-efficacy had complete mediating effects on the relation between social support and career preparation behavior. Third, it was found that social support indirectly had a positive effect on career preparation behavior through career decision-making self-efficacy. The results of this study show that perceived social support of Korean Polytechnics students affects career decision-making self-efficacy and increases the level of career preparation behavior. This suggests that through active social support around Korean Polytechnics students, it is necessary to provide environmental factors that can promote career preparation behavior by enhancing the self-efficacy of career decision-making, which is a low-level factor for students.

  • Student-athletes identify themselves as athletes first and students second and experience identity foreclosure in which they rarely consider other possibilities for their career besides professional athletes. There is a gap between the career education that college student-athletes and regular students get, so we conducted this study to test the effectiveness of a career education program. The proposed career education program was based on Super and Ginsberg's career development theory and Holland's career choice theory. Data were collected from 13 college student-athletes using a pretest-posttest research design and analyzed using a t-test. The program was conducted in the form of 90-minute weekly sessions over 3 weeks. The program's effectiveness was measured in terms of participants' stress from a lack of career information, career preparedness, self-understanding, and career decision-making self-efficacy. The results showed that each variable, except stress from a lack of career information, was significantly improved after the program compared to before the program, indicating that the program was effective. Theoretical and practical implications regarding career education for student-athletes are discussed in this paper.

  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

Three participants were selected before and after 30 years of age, three before and after 40 years of age, and three before and after 60 years of age. Subject analysis of the contents of the 18 interviews, showed that the life career branching point appeared in middle school grade 3, high school grade 3, until employment after graduation, within 3 years after entering their first job, early 40 years, 60 years old, and 80 years old. Second, external situations were due to the influence of important others, or external stimuli, environment, and career events. Third, negative emotions were repeated for each life career branching point. Fourth, as a result of the interview, the career identity confusion was repeated in every life career branching point. Fifth, the career strategy at the life career branching point was categorized as an approach strategy and avoidance strategy.

A draft web interface was designed by Rapid Prototyping and was thereafter taken to experts to review and determine the designs, in order to achieve the purpose of the study. Firstly, the sequence of activities of career education was run in accordance with the systematic order of Action Learning, in order to understand the overall design direction. Secondly, the design of the study may result in virtuous cycle-to-cycle. According to two major design directions, on the learning environment platform, the interface consisted of, knowing who I am; knowing who others think I am, knowing the job world; career decisions; career action plans; action planning; individual and co-evaluation; reflection; etc. These steps were designed to be implemented in accordance with strong interactivity of Wiki and Web 2.0 designs. This study was able to implement career education experiences centered around the activities of students at university, as well as experts, in order to increase the accessibility of Career Based Education on the web.

  • The purposes of this study was to identify relationship among self-efficacy, incivility, career identity and professionalism in nursing students. The subjects were 320 junior and senior nursing students from four colleges in Gyeonggi-do. As a result of the study, the average self-efficacy was 3.90 points, incivility was 2.36 points, career identity was 2.64 points, and nursing professionalism was 3.63points. Professionalism of nursing students was positively correlated self-efficacy, career identity, but nursing professionalism was negatively correlated incivility. The predictors on nursing professionalism were self-efficacy, incivility, career identity and rudeness. These variables have explanatory power of 16.3% on nursing professionalism. Therefore, specific strategies are needed to reduce the rudeness experienced in clinical practice and change in the curriculum to increase the career identity of nursing students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational factors on career choice of science-gifted students to science and technology bound universities and the difference of perception in regards to group factors. In addition, this study aimed to examine the effects of science-gifted education and critical events in relation to career choice to science and technology bound universities. For the study, 104 university freshmen, 75 males and 29 females, were sampled from UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology), that many science high school graduates entered this year. The survey was conducted with questionnaires to do with the perceptions concerning career choice and educational factors that cause them to choose such career directions. The educational factors on career choice to science and technology bound universities were classified as 3 main categories such as educational environment factor (teaching-learning factor), human factor, attitude towards science factor and the subcategories within each category. The research findings are as follows: First, the factors were closely connected with each other and 'the project centered classes' were highly interrelated with other educational environment factors such as 'the experiment activity and environment for the activity' and 'influence of teachers (professors).' Second, the female students and graduates of the science high school were more positively influenced by the educational environment and human factors on their decision for career than male students and graduates of the general high school. Third, this research found that historical scientific knowledge, perception of scientists' social status and job applications in the science field gave less influence rather than other factors on their decision for career. As a result of examining critical events for science-gifted education in relation to career choice to science and technology bound universities, numerous students mentioned that the extracurricular science activities such as science camps and field trips gave significant effects on students' career choices to science and engineering fields.
