The objective of this study is to identify the advantages of composite materials and to investigate the behavior of the anisotropic symmetric laminated cylindrical shell structures. To analyze the anisotropic symmetric laminated cylindrical shell structures, the finite difference technique. that consists of forward, central and backward difference, is introduced. In this study, the degree of freedom consists of three displacements and, especially, two moments except twisting moment. It has the advantage of improving the accuracy for calculating the moments. All four edges are assumed to be simply supported. From the numerical results, it is proved that the finite difference technique can be used efficiently to analyze the anisotropic symmetric laminated cylindrical shells and gives a guide in deciding how to make use of the fiber angle the anisotropic symmetric laminated cylindrical shells.
In recent years the development of high modulus, high strength and low density boron and graphite fibers bonded together has brought renewed interestes in structural elements. When a plate with arbitrarily oriented layers and clamped boundary conditions is subjected to uniform loading, it is difficult to analyze and apply, compared with isotropic and orthotropic cases. Therefore the numerical methods, such as finite difference method or finite element method, should be emloyed to analyse such problems. In this study the finite difference technique is used to formulate the bending analysis of symmetric composite laminated skew plates. When this technique is used to solve the problem, it is desirable to reduce the order of the derivatives in order to minimize the number of the pivotal points involved in each equation. The 4th order partial differential equations of laminated skew plates are converted to an equivalent three of 2nd order partial differential equations with three dependant variables.

Global-Local Laminate Variational Model is utilized to investigate the characteristics of interlaminar stresses in thick composite laminates under uniform axial extension. Various laminates with different fiber orientation and stacking sequences are analyzed to observe the behavior of interlaminar normal stresses. From this result, the interlaminar normal stress distribution along the laminate interfaces is examined and discussed with an existing approximation model. The repeated stacking of Poisson's ratio symmetric sublaminates is found to be the best stacking method of thick composite laminates to reduce the interlaminar normal stresses for the prevention of the free-edge delamination.
A 4-node assumed strain finite element based on higher order shear deformation theory is developed to investigate the behaviours of symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plates. The present element is based on Reddy's higher order shear deformation theory so that it can consider the parabolic distribution of shear deformation through plate thickness direction. In particular, assumed strain method is adopted to alleviate the shear locking phenomena inherited plate elements based on higher order shear deformation theory. The present finite element has seven degrees of freedom per node and denoted as HSA4. Numerical examples are carried out for symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plate with various thickness values. Numerical results are compared with reference solutions produced by other higher order shear deformation theories.

The optimun laminated composition of the stiffened composite plates is studied from the view point of buckling strength. The finite element method is applied to the buckling analysis of the composite plates taking into account the effect of shear deformation through the plate thickness. The stiffened plate model is discretized using plate thickness and symmetrically stacked. Parametric study is carried out for the selection of the optimum laminate structure; optimum fiber angle sequence through the thickness. Laminate structure of $[-45^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]$, is found to give the best buckling strength. For the case of that layer number is more than eight, best result is obtained when layers of the same fiber angle are put together, leaving the laminate has the same fiber angle sequence as a whole.

A study on the dynamic mechanical properties of the high strength carbon fiber epoxy composite beam was carried out. The macromechanical model was used for the theoretical analysis of the symmetric laminated composite beam. The anisotropic plate theory and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory were used to predict the effective flexural elastic modulus and the specific damping capacity of laminated composite beam. The free flexural vibration and torsional vibration tests were carried out to determine the specific damping capacities of the unidirectional laminated composite beam. The vibration tests were performed in a vacuum chamber with laser vibrometer system and electromagnetic hammer to obtain accurate experimental data. From the computational and experimental results, it was found that the theoretical values with the macromechanical analysis and the experimental data of symmetric laminated composite beam were in good agreement.

The minimum weight design for simply-supported isotropic or symmetrically laminated stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to various loads (axial compression or combined loads) is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The minimum weight design in accomplished with the CONMIN optimizer by Vanderplaats. Several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the minimum weight design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stingers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments, and general, panel and local skin buckling including stiffener rolling. The approach allows the consideration of various shapes of stiffening members. Rectangular, I, or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened cylindrical shells. Several design examples are analyzed and compared with those in the previous literatures. The unstiffened glass/epoxy, graphite/epoxy(T300/5208), and graphite/epoxy aluminum honeycomb cylindrical shells and stiffened graphite/epoxy cyindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed through the present approach.

A generalized laminated composite beam element is presented for the flexural and buckling analysis of laminated composite beams with double and single symmetric cross-sections. Based on shear-deformable beam theory, the present beam model accounts for transverse shear and warping deformations, as well as all coupling terms caused by material anisotropy. The plane stress and plane strain assumptions were used along with the cross-sectional stiffness coefficients obtained from the analytical technique for different cross-sections. Two types of one-dimensional beam elements with seven degrees-of-freedom per node, including warping deformation, i.e., three-node and four-node elements, are proposed to predict the flexural behavior of symmetric or anti-symmetric laminated beams. To alleviate the shear-locking problem, a reduced integration scheme was employed in this study. The buckling load of laminated composite beams under axial compression was then calculated using the derived geometric block stiffness. To demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed beam elements, the results based on three-node beam element were compared with those of other researchers and ABAQUS finite elements. The effects of coupling and shear deformation, support conditions, load forms, span-to-height ratio, lamination architecture on the flexural response, and buckling load of composite beams were investigated. The convergence of two different beam elements was also performed.
