The intertidal area in Lake Sihwa formed after operation of Sihwa-Lake tidal power plant and the change of the area in Lake Sihwa by period were analyzed. For computation of the intertidal area, remote sensing techniques were applied and high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was generated with root mean square (rms) error 14.4 cm. The intertidal area was $165.1km^2$ in 1910s, $115.2km^2$ in 1991 before completion of Sihwa dyke, $5.6km^2$ in 2010 during the period on operation of sluice gate, and $20.3km^2$ in 2013 after operation of Sihwa tidal power plant. Intertidal in Lake Sihwa was nearly dissipated after completion of Sihwa dyke, but significantly increased with operation of Sihwa tidal power plant from April 2012 as developing a regular tide environment and increasing of sea water flux. The re-formation of tidal flat of Sihwa Lake is an uncommon case. This study that precisely analyzed on the area of artificially formed Sihwa tidal flat would be applicable for management and making conservation plan.

The late Quaternary stratigraphy of the tidal deposits in the Hampyung Bay, southwestern coast of Korea comprises 1) Unit III (nonmarine fluvial coarse-grained sediments), 2) Unit II (late Pleistocene tidal deposits), and 3) Unit I (late Holocene fine-grained tidal deposits) in ascending order. The basements of the Hampyung Bay is composed of granitic rocks and basic dyke rocks. These three units are of unconformally bounded sedimentary sequences. The sequence boundary between Unit I and Unit II, in particular, seems to be significant suggesting erosional surface and exposed to the air under the cold climate during the LGM. The uppermost stratigraphic sequence (Unit I) is a common tidal deposit formed under the transgression to highstand sea-level during the middle to late Holocene.
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of intertidal flat can be widely used not only for scientific fields, coastal management, fisheries, ocean safety, military, but also for understanding natural and artificial topographic changes of the tidal flat. In this study, we generated DEM of the Ganghwado southern intertidal flat, the largest tidal flat in the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, using waterline method and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Constructed DEM which applied waterline method to the Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images closely expresses overall topographic relief of tidal flat. We found that the accuracy was determined by the number of waterlines which reflect various tidal conditions. The application of InSAR to the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT images showed that only ERS-1/2 tandem pairs successfully generated DEM in the part of northern Yeongjongdo, but construction of DEM in the other areas was difficult due to the low coherence caused by a lot of surface remnant waters. In the near future, Kompsat-2 will provide satellite images having multi-spectral and high spatial resolution within a relatively short period at different sea levels. Application of waterline method to these images will help us construct a high precision tidal flat DEM. Also, we should develop DEM generation method using single-pass microwave satellite images.
Kyeonggi Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment in the Yellow Sea coast of central korea, is fringed by vastly developed tidal flats. About 400 surface sediment samples were collected from the intertidal and subtidal zones of Kyeonggi Bay for a study of the sediment distribution pattern and the surface sediment characteristics of this environment. The kyeonggi Bay surface sediment becomes progressively finer in the shoreward direction, from offshore sand to shoreward silty sand and sandy silt. This shoreward-fining trend is repeated again on the tidal flat and, as a consequence, a grain-size break occurs near the low-water line which separates the intertidal area from the subtidal one. The intertidal and subtidal sediments differ from each other in textural characteristics such as mean grain size and skewness and this can be interpreted to result from differences in hydraulic energy and morphology between the two environments. The mineral and chemical compositions of the Kyeonggi Bay sediments are largely controlled by the sediment grain size. Smectite was nearly absent in the clay mineral assemblage of Kyeonggi Bay sediment. The contents of Co, Cu and Ni were high in the Banweol tidal flat, which suggests a continuous process of accumulation of these metals. the intertidal environment appears to respond rapidly to artificial coastal modifications, the effects of which should be taken into consideration when planning a dam construction or coastal reclamation.
The main objective of the research is a feasibility study on the intertidal zone using a X-band radar satellite, TerraSAR-X. The TerraSAR-X data have been acquired in the west coast of Korea where large tidal flats, Ganghwa and Yeongjong tidal flats, are developed. Investigations include: 1) waterline and backscattering characteristics of the high resolution X-band images in tidal flats; 2) polarimetric signature of halophytes (or salt marsh plants), specifically Suaeda japonica; and 3) phase and coherence of interferometric pairs. Waterlines from TerraSAR-X data satisfy the requirement of horizontal accuracy of 60 m that corresponds to 20 cm in average height difference while current other spaceborne SAR systems could not meet the requirement. HH-polarization was the best for extraction of waterline, and its geometric position is reliable due to the short wavelength and accurate orbit control of the TerraSAR-X. A halophyte or salt marsh plant, Suaeda japonica, is an indicator of local sea level change. From X-band ground radar measurements, a dual polarization of VV/VH-pol. is anticipated to be the best for detection of the plant with about 9 dB difference at 35 degree incidence angle. However, TerraSAR-X HH/TV dual polarization was turned to be more effective for salt marsh monitoring. The HH-HV value was the maximum of about 7.9 dB at 31.6 degree incidence angle, which is fairly consistent with the results of X-band ground radar measurement. The boundary of salt marsh is effectively traceable specifically by TerraSAR-X cross-polarization data. While interferometric phase is not coherent within normal tidal flat, areas of salt marsh where the landization is preceded show coherent interferometric phases regardless of seasons or tide conditions. Although TerraSAR-X interferometry may not be effective to directly measure height or changes in tidal flat surface, TanDEM-X or other future X-band SAR tandem missions within one-day interval would be useful for mapping tidal flat topography.
A high-resolution seismic survey was conducted on the abandoned tidal flat in Shihwa Lake on the west coast of Korea. A portable vibrator was used as a seismic source and 217 shot gathers with 48-channel system were acquired. F-k filtering, residual static corrections and post-stack frequency filtering are found to be useful for signal enhancement. The overburden is divided into two seismic depositional units. Unit I is deposited in tidal environment characterized by parallel and high continuity reflection pattern. This unit comprises a dry layer (Unit Ia) and a wet layer (Unit Ib) having averagely 5 and 15 meters thick, respectively. Unit II unconformably overlain by Unit I exhibits discontinuity and hummocky reflection pattern, indicating complex channel-fill sediments in estuary. The maximum thickness of this unit is approximately 20 meter. Acoustic basement is considered as Precambrian granitic gneiss occurred in the surrounding area.

This study was carried out targeting the intertidal zone and estuary area of Anseo port in Saemangeum reclamation zone from 2003 to 2004, to analyze how reclamation affects the distribution of vegetation and soil properties. The plant growing in these survey areas was all halophytes: the vegetation on the intertidal zone consisted of simply 3 species of halophyte, and vegetation on the high tide zone and estuary area consisted of 9 and 8 species respectively, showing a more varied aspect than the intertidal zone. As for the plant species distribution, the predominant species for the intertidal zone were Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Suaeda japonica; the predominant species for the slope zone of estuary were Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Aster tripolium, and the predominant species for the inundation zone of estuary were Kochia scoparia var. littorea. At the analysis result of soil chemical properties, it was discovered that the appearance of the plant species was made at some spots on the intertidal zone whose electrical conductivity(EC), $Na^+,\;and\;Cl^-$ were relatively lower. EC of between the plant species was similar in the same zone, however EC was distinctively different between the same species in the different zone. Our study found out that whether the occurrence of the plant species is possible or not was decided by the difference in soil properties. This study results suggest that the distribution of vegetation is influenced by soil environment in that the appearance of the plant species on the intertidal zone and estuary area is differentiated by soil texture and soil chemical properties.

In order to investigate current characteristics at the Gungpyung beach, which is a macrotidal flat, field measurements were carried out in the summer and winter at the intertidal and the subtidal zones. The distribution of residual current at intertidal flat was dominant in the northward direction in the summer and dominant in the northward and southwestern directions in the winter. The direction and speed of the residual current in the winter are highly correlated with the significant wave height, and the turbidity is also highly correlated with the significant wave height. Therefore, in the winter, high sediment rates are suspended by high waves, and sediments are transporting due to the residual current in the southwest direction. On the other hand, it is expected that the northward residual current is predominant due to the small wave in the summer, and sediment transport does not occur largely due to less suspended sediments. In addition, sediment transport in the southern direction is blocked by the dock, which is the artificial structure, and the erosion occurs in the south side of the dock. The erosion pattern in the macrotidal zone of Yellow sea is dominated by seasonal waves, and blocking of sediments by artificial structure is very important.
The intertidal flat depositional environment of Southern Nam Yang Bay, west coast of Korea has been studied to understand textural, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics. The intertidal flat environment can be divided into two subenvironments, that is, the mud flat and the sand flat due to the sediment textures. From thd outer sand flat to the inner mud flat the grain size of the sediments decreases and the mud content increases. It is suggested that the intertidal flat environment is in the progradation of marsh deposits in the mud flat. The chemical composition of the sediments is related to the sediment textures. The chemical index of maturity of the mud flat sediments is higher than that of the sand flat sediments. The clay minerals of the sediments are chlorite, illite, montmorillonite and kaolinite.
