This study proposes a new islanding detection method that uses the phase shift of feed-forward voltage and evaluates the performance of an existing method and the proposed method when the grid frequency changes within the allowable range under steady-state conditions. The investigated existing method, which is slip mode frequency shift (SMS), uses current phase shift to detect islanding. The SMS method supplies reactive current to the grid under this condition, but the proposed method does not generate additional reactive power because it does not depend on the current control loop. The performance in steady-state grid condition is evaluated through simulations and experiments.
Islanding detection is one of the most important issues for the distributed generation (DG) systems connected to the power grid. The conventional passive islanding detection methods inherently have a non-detection zone (NDZ), and active islanding detection methods may deteriorate the power quality of a power system. This paper proposes a novel hybrid islanding detection method based on Digital Lock-In Amplifier with no NDZ by monitoring the harmonics present in the grid. Proposed method detects islanding by passively monitoring the grid voltage harmonics and verify it by injecting small perturbation for only three-line cycles. Unlike FFT for the harmonic extraction, DLA HC have lower computational burden, moreover, DLA can monitor harmonic in real time, whereas, FFT has certain propagation delay. The simulation results are presented to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed technique. In order to prove the performance of the proposed method it is compared with several passive islanding detection methods. The experimental results confirm that the proposed method exhibits outstanding performance as compared to the conventional methods.
As photovoltaic(PV) power generation system becomes more common, it will be necessary to investigate islanding detection method for PV systems. Islanding of PV systems can cause a variety of problems and must be prevented. However, if the real and reactive power of the load and PV system are closely matched, islanding detection by Passive methods becomes difficult. Also, most active methods lose effectiveness when there are several PV systems feeding the same island. The active frequency drift positive feedback method(AFDPF) enables islanding detection by forcing the frequency of the voltage in the island to drift up or down. In this paper the research for the minimum value of chopping fraction gain applied digital phase-locked-loop (DPLL) to AFDPF considering output power quality and islanding prevention performance are performed by simulation and experiment according to IEEE Std 929-2000 islanding test.
Unintentional islanding results in safety hazards, reliability, and many other issues. Therefore, the islanding detection of a power conditioning system of a distributed generation, such as a grid-connected photovoltaic inverter, is a key function for standard compliance. Currently, many anti-islanding schemes have been examined, but existing anti-islanding schemes have poor power quality and non-detection zone issues. Therefore, this study analyzes the non-detection zone in a more deliberate manner than the existing analysis of the non-detection zone and proposes a new anti-islanding scheme, which has negligible power quality degradation and no non-detection zone. Simulation and experimental results validate that the proposed scheme shows much better performance than other existing schemes.
BIPV or BAPV installation applied to building is increasing through public utility mandates enterprise. Solar PV energy generates only during the day, but if it is operated in convergence with ESS, which stores electrical energy, it can restrain the fossil energy used in buildings throughout the day. A solution is to converge with PV system and ESS. However, PV systems and ESS connected to the power grid in parallel can cause problems of electrical stability. A study was conducted on the case of failure to detect islanding operation under the parallel operation of PV generation and ESS that are connected in parallel to power grid. Experiments conducted various non-islanding detections under the operating conditions. In the experiment results, when one PCS - PV inverter or ESS inverter - was operating under the islanding condition, it stopped working within 0.5 seconds of the Korean grid standard. However, when both of PV inverter and ESS inverter were operating at the same time under the islanding situation, the anti-islanding algorithm did not operate normally and both inverters continuously supplied power to the connected RLC loads. islanding detection Algorithm developed by each inverter manufacturer has caused this phenomenon. Therefore, this paper presented a new test standard for islanding detection.
This paper presents an active anti-islanding detection method using negative sequence voltage injection to the grid through a three-phase photovoltaic inverters. Because islanding operation mode can cause a variety of problems, the islanding detection of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter is the mandatory feature. The islanding mode is detected by measuring the magnitude of negative sequence impedance calculated by the negative sequence voltage and current at the point of common coupling. Simulation and experimental test are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method which can detect the islanding mode in the specified time. The test has been done in accordance with the condition on IEEE Std 929-2000.
This paper proposes an active islanding detection method for the BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) with 3-phase inverter which is connected to the AC grid. The proposed method adopts the DDSRF (Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame) PLL (Phase Locked-Loop) so that the independent control of positive-sequence and negative-sequence current is successfully carried out using the detected phase angle information. The islanding state can be detected by sensing the variation of negative-sequence voltage at the PCC (Point of Common Connection) due to the injection of 2-3% negative-sequence current from the BESS. The proposed method provides a secure and rapid detection under the variation of negative-sequence voltage due to the sag and swell. The feasibility of proposed method was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental analyses with 5kW hardware prototype for the benchmark circuit of islanding detection suggested by IEEE 1547 and UL1741. The proposed method would be applicable for the secure detection of islanding state in the grid-tied Microgrid.
