  • Animation documentary is a hybrid genre that is newly highlighted with opposite properties. The actual world is reproduced with an unrealistic method in documentary aspect, but the objectivity of documentaries cannot be guaranteed as the boundary of actual pictures and digital images has become ambiguous. As the animation documentary by Ari Folman succeeded in 2008, the focus of this study is on 'how can fictional animations prove the authenticity of documentaries?' in which the study is mainly conducted in documentary aspect. For this, the researcher considers visual style research has important role in understanding and developing a new video genre, and asserts the necessity of research on reproduction image that is produced by the characteristics of animation which is produced in frame units. This paper has contents on the visual style of animation documentaries with pictorial reproduction methods in which animation images were classified into 3 styles based on previous research on animation documentary style. Visual styles are classified into actual image that is based on similarity with reality to deliver objective facts, image that is transformed through emphasis and omission which are factors of animations, and surrealistic image that reproduces non-visual regions such as illusions and the inner side of characters. Through this study that analyzes visual style types and characteristics, animation documentaries are expected to position as a hybrid genre that illustrates reality with a new method instead of being included in the existing reproduction method of documentaries.

Werner Bischof entered Korea twice in 1951 and 1952 for military journals. Through Korean war pictures, essay, multiple letters and photobooks, I shed a light on the background of his military journals and activities, and analyzed topics and characteristics based on key photos that he took during his first and second military journalist activities. Bischof created a work centered on 'Human'. Especially, he has this consciousness of 'What happens to civilians in war-ridden area?'. Bischof took civilians in Sanyangri in his camera to announce pain of civilians and tragedy of war coming from war during his first military journalist activity. During his second military journalist activity, he critiqued ideological brainwashing, life of prisoners of war in a humanist point of view. The latter showed characteristics of clear contrast of black and white, image arrangement based on characters, and outstanding photo views. His military journal activity is in search of civilian suffering, and humanism in Korean war. This consciousness crosses through generation over generation that cannot be compared to other military journalists.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the social and cultural implication of the activities of taking 'selfies' and the use of Social Network Service(SNS)s through the personal story of a 20s female researcher. She analyzes her own digital photography activities based on the experience of the use of Cyworld photo albums for three years and the use of pictures in iPhone album for fifteen months. The other researcher(40s male) cooperates to answer the questions about how to understand the digital photography activities. We understand the digital photography activities including digital cameras, social network services and smart phones as acts of personal identity configuration and acts of making the personal documentary. As a result, digital photos are used more for archive purpose rather than for document purpose. Also, we found that the digital photography activities can be understood as the interactions between human and non-human actors in the perspective of Actor-Network Theory (ANT).

  • This study intends to rehabilitate the memories of the social other which have been gradually forgotten in the social events overloaded with the undemocratic violence in South Korea today. This study explores a case of Yongsan Tragedy in 2009 among the most tragic events. It notes the autonomous ways in which activist artists would like to memorize the socio-historical events anew despite the emptiness of public records. In other words, this study considers the Yongsan case to be significant that a group of the public, artists, grassroots activists, religion men got together in solidarity so as to create the contested narratives countering dominant memories and thus to signify the records written by the civil society. Among others, activist artists had documented the unofficial counter-memories of socially alienated peoples in terms of planning a series of artistic events such as opening some gallery exhibitions and performance events, issuing a volume of work books, comics and photographies, online broadcasting, and directing some documentaries. Especially, this paper tends to note the documentation of on-site activist artists to record the counter-memories against social oblivion. By doing so, it finally suggests how we could document the Yongsan Tragedy both to search out the archival implications of today's art activism and to insert those artistic records into the commonly shared counter-memories in a more inclusive way.
