The asynchronous bistatic sonar needs to estimate direct blast arrival time at a receiver to localize targets, and therefore the direct blast arrival time estimation error could be added to target localization error in comparison with synchronous system. Direct blast especially appears as several peaks at the matched filter output by multipath, thus we compared the first peak detection technique and the maximum peak detection technique of those peaks for direct blast arrival time estimation through sea trial data. The test was performed in a shallow sea with bistatic sonar made up of spatially separated source and line array sensors. Line array sensors obtained the target signal which is generated from the echo repeater. As a result, the first peak detection technique is superior to maximum peak detection technique in direct blast arrival time estimation error. The result of this analysis will be used for further research of target tracking in the asynchronous bistatic sonar.
In this paper, we proposed an algorithm that used a direct method to set an initial value of Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno(BFGS) method and, accordingly, conducted an experiment in optimal directivity synthesis of adaptive ultrasonic transducer by point source array. To certify the efficiency of this method, quasi-ideal beam with arbitrary beam width, rotating beam, and multi beam, all with the limited side lobe level -30dB, were chosen to check the problem of directivity synthesis that was formed by point source array in the second dimensional sound field. The numerical calculation results showed that the proposed method performed the directivity synthesis faster than the BFGS method did. In addition, the proposed method showed a good error correction for directivity synthesis, and did not demand the choice of initial value. Finally, it is also shown that the proposed method can be used for the adaptive control that was not possible with the direct method alone.
Active sonar has been commonly used to detect targets existing in the shallow water. When a signal is transmitted and returned back from a target, it has been distorted by various properties of acoustic channel such as multipath arrivals, scattering from rough sea surface and ocean bottom, and refraction by sound speed structure, which makes target detection difficult. It is therefore necessary to consider these channel properties in the target signal simulation in operational performance system of active sonar. In this paper, a monostatic active sonar system is considered, and the target echo, reverberation, and ambient noise are individually simulated as a function of time, and finally summed to simulate a total received signal. A 3-dimensional highlight model, which can reflect the target features including the shape, position, and azimuthal and elevation angles, has been applied to each multipath pair between source and target to simulate the target echo signal. The results are finally compared to those obtained by the algorithm in which only direct path is considered in target signal simulation.

Conventional hydrophones can only measure acoustic pressure. To measure both acoustic pressure and incident direction, various types of vector hydrophones have been researched. In this paper, we deal with a ring-type multimode vector hydrophone divided into 4 elements and present a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation method based on the pressure gradient-acceleration relationship. The performance of the presented method is analyzed by the simulation based on the sensor modeling and is verified by the water tank experiment. The proposed method could work under the multi-frequency condition and may be utilized in many applications due to its low computation complexity.
Inversion of multi-mode surface-wave phase velocity for shallow engineering site investigation has received much attention in recent years. A sensitivity analysis and inversion of both synthetic and field data demonstrates the greater effectiveness of this method over employing the fundamental mode alone. Perturbation of thickness and shear-wave velocity parameters in multi-modal Rayleigh wave phase velocities revealed that the sensitivities of higher modes: (a) concentrate in different frequency bands, and (b) are greater than the fundamental mode for deeper parameters. These observations suggest that multi-mode phase velocity inversion can provide better parameter discrimination and imaging of deep structure, especially with a velocity reversal, than can inversion of fundamental mode data alone. An inversion of the theoretical phase velocities in a model with a low velocity layer at 20 m depth can only image the soft layer when the first higher mode is incorporated. This is especially important when the lowest measurable frequency is only 6 Hz. Field tests were conducted at sites surveyed by borehole and PS logging. At the first site, an array microtremor survey, often used for deep geological surveying in Japan, was used to survey the soil down to 35 m depth. At the second site, linear multichannel spreads with a sledgehammer source were recorded, for an investigation down to 12 m depth. The f-k power spectrum method was applied for dispersion analysis, and velocities up to the second higher mode were observed in each test. The multi-mode inversion results agree well with PS logs, but models estimated from the fundamental mode alone show f large underestimation of the depth to shallow soft layers below artificial fill.
High-frequency monostatic reverberation model (HYREV: HanYang Univ. REVerberation model) suitable for shallow-water environment is presented. It is difficult to predict reverberation signals in shallow water due to scattering from sea surface and seafloor. The arrival times and transmission losses from the source to scatterers are obtained from the eigenrays. The composite roughness theory is used to predict the boundary scattering. The signals generated by the HYREV and the GSM were compared with the observed signals and it is showed that the HYREV model provided a closer fit to the observed signals than those obtained using the GSM.
In this Paper, we Propose synthetic aperture technique for twin-line may. Sin91e-line way is required long aperture size in order to achieve high SNR and angular resolution in shallow water Ultra low frequency signal from far-field has left-right ambiguity at sing1e-line array. To resolve these Problems, we'd like to adopt the synthetic aperture technique to twin-line array. The synthetic aperture method adopts coherent processing of sub-aperture signals at successive tine intervals in the beam domain. The proposed method shows low nile error and improved angular resolution. In simulation result, average sidelobe level is reduced about 7〔dB〕when the array Peformed 5-synthesis.

Source localization is an important problem in the field of sonar and radar, etc. For the purpose of source localization, two or more spatially separated sensors are often used to measure the time difference of arrivals of a radiating source whose transmitted signal waveform is unknown. The NLS(Nonlinear Least Square) cost function with curve fitting method was proposed recently, which provide robust source localization performance by reducing estimation ambiguity. However, even this algorithm shows degraded performance in a multipath environment. To estimates source localization correctly, source localization algorithm that eliminate the effect of multipath signals is required. In this paper, PMP(Power Matching Procedure) is added to the algorithm, which provides improved source localization performance by properly cutting out the effect of multipath signals. Through simulation the performance of the proposed source localization algorithm is verified.

One-port acoustic characteristics of an in-duct source can be measured by the multi-load method using an overdetermined set of open pipes with different lengths as applied loads. The input data. viz. load pressure and load impedance, are usually contaminated by measurement error in the actual measurements, which result in errors in the calculated source parameters. In this paper, the effects of the errors in the input data on the results have been studied numerically, varying the number of loads and their impedances in order to determine what combination of the loads will yield the best result. An error analysis is applied to each case of possible loads, which consist of open pipes. It is noted that, frequently, only a set of open pipes is used when applying the multi-load method to the intake or exhaust sides of internal combustion engines. A set of pipe lengths which cause the calculated results to be least sensitive to the input data error can be found when using open pipe loads. The present work is intended to produce guidelines for preparing an appropriate load set in order to obtain accurate source properties of fluid machines.
